Prince's MTV 1985 interview

How adorable was he during this interview? He is a very funny man. I love when he was describing seeing Andre and offering to give him the Dance electric.

Anyone old enough on this board to have seen this live when it first aired on MTV? I know it was a big deal because he really didn't do TV interviews all that much up untill that point right?

He's so dreamy. love I love his personality.

I just watched the clip..it comes across that behind the false bravado, Prince really IS painfully shy. No wonder why he doesn't do more interviews. he lets the music do the talking (take that Joe Perry)

He looked so sweet and vulnerable. You could tell he was shy and nervous - nothing like his stage personality now. He was ALWAYS cool as shit, though

It's werid because sometimes he really reminds me of myself. In certain ways..when people first meet me they think I'm painfuly shy...and I do act reserved..but when I'm comfortable with someone I turn into the center of attention and I love to make people laugh. I guess that is part of the reason why I like him so much. boxed

Yep, I saw it live (well, I mean the first airing of it -- it had been recorded with a list of MTV questions pre-selected by Prince's manager, Steve Fargnoli). I remember MTV and Mark Goodman making a big deal over it. It was one of the first things I ever recorded onto VCR. Up to this point, most of us had never seen Prince give an interview ever -- was there ever a televised interview of Prince before this one?? I was really surprised at how laid back and humorous he was. His whole Purple Rain persona was shy and mysterious, so it was fun to see him break out of that shell. "See... he ain't so weird afterall!"

I saw this when it originally aired and remember it quite well. I, also, taped it. Of course it WAS hyped up to be a big deal BUT like many things with Prince, it was a bit of a "show". This wasn't a REAL free form interview. Questions were sent by Mtv but the final set was chosen by Prince & Co and the questions were asked 'on air' by his own manager in a controlled setting. So, this was more or less a rehearsed or 'prepared' broadcast despite what it looks like. As one critic said after this aired, "I take it back, the guy CAN act."

wacky

Prince has never given an interview that was in the slightest bit satisfying or believable.

I watch him talk just to see his sweet supple lips move. His sweet shock absorbant lips.

I taped it when it was first aired on MTV. It was bigtime news, no doubt. I never bought the "P is sooo shy" thing. P's knows that if he came off shy, then there would be plenty of women who would dig that. Gotta realize that P is a smart brutha. And he also has to be in control of every situation. To have his manager of all people to conduct the interview isn't a stretch by any means. That shit was rehearsed to death. P knew WHAT he was going to be asked, HOW, he was going to look when he answered, WHAT he was going to say...that shit was as staged as a Broadway musical.

You know what's weird? I always thought that interview was great, but I think P lost a little "mystique" during that era. He was so comical, happy, and animated that it threw a lot of people off. In the "Purple Rain" era, he was so dark and brooding in the movie and that image was brought a little bit onstage too. Then during the "Cherry Moon" days, he was so.....umm, "Morris like".

Even during the MTV "Cherry Moon" movie premiere, he was so happy (even though I read he didn't want to do it and almost cancelled it)... Maybe because he really hit the big time then? Just a funny observation. But by 87 when I saw his look in the "U Got The Look" vid, I knew he would going back to being "strange and crazy" again. (lol)

Really interesting! Yes well I suppose that is because both of those sides to his personality...the quiet, reflective "werid" Prince and the crazy-life-of-the-party Morris like Prince really exist. biggrin

Yes I can see how fans of Prince's when they first saw Cherry Moon were like ...WTF? Is this the same guy?

Possibly Emmanuelle is the mother of the mini (French) Prince. (Yes I know that this is crossing threads but I couldn't resist it)

LOL. Yep. Absolutely. Prince rehearses EVERYTHING at least back in those days. Only as of Musicology has he broken down and done talk shows and been more relaxed, it seems.

The MTV interview was a high point for a lot of us when it came out because it was his first post Purple Rain interview, and he wasn't really known for talking to the press.

At the time, it was the coolest thing ever and made him seem even more like a mysterious genius.

Nowadays, it seems as contrived as hell. If you ever saw him sing Purple Rain live today, with the gasps and the eye-rolling theatrics, it was cool as s**t back in the day, but nowadays it would fall flatter than a lead block.

The great thing about P is that he's always changing. None of us would be here if he were still acting like Prince circa 1985. It would get old fast. He's not afraid to keep moving and changing.
