3121 - The Questionnaire

My fellow Orgers and Orgettes, in the name of all that is purple, it is time to submit to some professional testing.

1. Are you still trying to figure out what the heck 3121 really is?

2. And the cover? Are you trying to figure its alleged hidden meaning?

3. How weird is it for you that Prince is still using sexual imagery but pretends it's not physical, à la "want to go down south" means going to Florida?

4. You know Prince is going to be religious. Besides shutting up entirely about his beliefs or going TRC on you, do you think the way he does it on 3121 strikes a good balance?

5. Do you listen to 3121 loud enough for others to hear, for instance in your car or "too" loud in your apartment? If not, why?

6. In a year or two, Prince will release another album. Do you think by then 3121 will be on one of your high shelves gathering a bit of dust because you're not a thorough duster or will it still be in the deck closest to the system, where you keep the records you actually listen to?

7. It seems like every other album Prince releases is called "his best since SOTT". In your expert opinion and just so we can settle this once and for all, which of the following was actually "his best since SOTT"?

Diamonds and Pearls
The Gold Experience
Emancipation
The Rainbow Children
Musicology
3121

1. No

2. No

3. Not bothered

4. Not bothered

5. Yes

6. It will be with all of the other Prince CD albums in chronological order - stored within easy reach and sheltered from dust.

7. The Gold Experience (but in my humble opinion)

NO, that's a disappointment. I always enjoyed his "spiritual" side, but this is nothing to do with religion. It would seem maybe I am done with Prince soon, because the "inner spirituality of the music" was what I was listening to.

No, because I believe in being able to hear when I get old.

News: Prince pulls his head out his ass in the last moment.
Bad News: Prince wasted too much quality time doing so.
You have those internalized issues because you want to, you like to, stop.

1. Are you still trying to figure out what the heck 3121 really is?

Nah, can't be arsed to spend my time wondering about something like that. I decided a long time ago already that it's about lesbians. That's my final word.

2. And the cover? Are you trying to figure its alleged hidden meaning?

As much as I am attempting to figure out the hidden meanings on candy wrappers.

3. How weird is it for you that Prince is still using sexual imagery but pretends it's not physical, à la "want to go down south" means going to Florida?

It's not weird at all. I use non-sexual imaginary and pretend instead it's sexual, just to come off as childish in front of my friends.

4. You know Prince is going to be religious. Besides shutting up entirely about his beliefs or going TRC on you, do you think the way he does it on 3121 strikes a good balance?

"The Word" is just pretty silly if you ask me. But I take it as he's really singing about giving/getting head on that one, as he does on all of his songs.

5. Do you listen to 3121 loud enough for others to hear, for instance in your car or "too" loud in your apartment? If not, why?

I have far more irritating records to piss off my neighbours than some geeky Prince stuff.

6. In a year or two, Prince will release another album. Do you think by then 3121 will be on one of your high shelves gathering a bit of dust because you're not a thorough duster or will it still be in the deck closest to the system, where you keep the records you actually listen to?

It will be on my shelf, but I have no idea what kind of shelf it's going to be. I actually have to go to IKEA next week or so.

7. It seems like every other album Prince releases is called "his best since SOTT". In your expert opinion and just so we can settle this once and for all, which of the following was actually "his best since SOTT"?

The Gold Experience.

1. No.

2. No.

3. Not weird.

4. I don't mind him going religious, so I can't give a qualified opinion on this, I guess. But a "balance" 3121 might be.

5. Yes, I do. I play it at work.

6. The only reason it might collect dust is that I usually rip the music on my computer nowadays and often listen to it there or use a copy I made to protect the original from scretches.

7. Tough. I think it's a competition between The Symbol album (which you didn't mention), TGE, Emancipation, TRC and 3121. I would pass the title to TRC by a trace.

1. no. I already know.

2. no. I dont have enough patience to ponder such thingz.

3. yeah. I think its weird. Unless he can do it in a more clever way, its better not to do it at all. Sometimez it soundz like a played out pimp that I'd find over on 6 Mile Rd in Detroit.

4. yeah. Itz not as in your face as TRC. Its tolerable.

5. I usually don't blast music. Im a grown assed man. Itz just something I dont do alot of these days. Sure, I'll turn it up a bit, but I dont blast it.
I wanna be able to hear the nurse ask me if I want chunky or smooth peanut butter when Im in the retirement home.

6. 3121 is an improvement, but it will probably not be in regular rotation by the time the tulips blossom and I can see the shoots above the soil now.

7. The Gold Experience was his best effort of the 90s, IMO. So, I'll go for that.

    1. Are you still trying to figure out what the heck 3121 really is?

  • i'll leave it to the geeks on the board here to figure it out for me smile

    2. And the cover? Are you trying to figure its alleged hidden meaning?

  • since when does it have a hidden meaning? shrug

    3. How weird is it for you that Prince is still using sexual imagery but pretends it's not physical, à la "want to go down south" means going to Florida?

  • i'm still giggling at "long time ago we'd be the shhhh... uh oh!"

    4. You know Prince is going to be religious. Besides shutting up entirely about his beliefs or going TRC on you, do you think the way he does it on 3121 strikes a good balance?

  • i know the word is all preachy but as a song i totally love it... so yeah, i think he's finally found a nice balance

    5. Do you listen to 3121 loud enough for others to hear, for instance in your car or "too" loud in your apartment? If not, why?

  • i've just tried to spread the music around so that the people close to me get into this album... but i live alone with no cd deck in the car so shrug

    6. In a year or two, Prince will release another album. Do you think by then 3121 will be on one of your high shelves gathering a bit of dust because you're not a thorough duster or will it still be in the deck closest to the system, where you keep the records you actually listen to?

1. Are you still trying to figure out what the heck 3121 really is?

No. I've gotten way too many headaches trying that.

2. And the cover? Are you trying to figure its alleged hidden meaning?

If you look closely, you can see Prince holding his hand up, similar to a martial arts pose, like he's saying "Watch it now, cuz I'm bout give you a flying kick to the A$@@$###$!

3. How weird is it for you that Prince is still using sexual imagery but pretends it's not physical, à la "want to go down south" means going to Florida?

It just fits into his double meanings and metaphors that he always likes to use.

4. You know Prince is going to be religious. Besides shutting up entirely about his beliefs or going TRC on you, do you think the way he does it on 3121 strikes a good balance?

It seems like he's made an effort to make getting saved more palatable with being at a party. Without actually counting, it feels like there are as many spirtual references in 3121 as there are in TRC--he just expressed it differently.

5. Do you listen to 3121 loud enough for others to hear, for instance in your car or "too" loud in your apartment? If not, why?

I've been blasting 3121 in my car for the most part when I commute. At home, I generally use my headphones when I just wanna concentrate on new music.

6. In a year or two, Prince will release another album. Do you think by then 3121 will be on one of your high shelves gathering a bit of dust because you're not a thorough duster or will it still be in the deck closest to the system, where you keep the records you actually listen to?

3121 will still be in my car. I rotate most of his CDs in my 12-disc changer in the car so I can have a steady purple dose at my disposal. I've even taken a few of my 12" and made them into mini-discs so I can relive the glory days of the B-sides.

7. It seems like every other album Prince releases is called "his best since SOTT". In your expert opinion and just so we can settle this once and for all, which of the following was actually "his best since SOTT"?

Diamonds and Pearls
The Gold Experience
Emancipation
The Rainbow Children
Musicology
3121

His best since SOTT? I'm at a draw between The Gold Experience and The Rainbow Children. I'm surprised you didn't list Lovesexy though.

1. Are you still trying to figure out what the heck 3121 really is?

no. in all honesty, i don't even want to know. it might ruin the way
i totally dig this song since i first heard it.

2. And the cover? Are you trying to figure its alleged hidden meaning?

absolutely not.

3. How weird is it for you that Prince is still using sexual imagery but pretends it's not physical, à la "want to go down south" means going to Florida?

it's a tad bit silly, but i can live with that.

4. You know Prince is going to be religious. Besides shutting up entirely about his beliefs or going TRC on you, do you think the way he does it on 3121 strikes a good balance?

it's not in your face, i hardly notice it.

5. Do you listen to 3121 loud enough for others to hear, for instance in your car or "too" loud in your apartment? If not, why?

no. i just don't like bothering other people with my music anymore.

6. In a year or two, Prince will release another album. Do you think by then 3121 will be on one of your high shelves gathering a bit of dust because you're not a thorough duster or will it still be in the deck closest to the system, where you keep the records you actually listen to?

i put everything on my harddrive and i think that some of the songs from 3121
will still be on average rotation by the time the next album comes out. just
to compare, the songs from musicology i still play are only 3

7. It seems like every other album Prince releases is called "his best since SOTT". In your expert opinion and just so we can settle this once and for all, which of the following was actually "his best since SOTT"?

used to be The Gold Experience
but then it became The Rainbow Children

1. Are you still trying to figure out what the heck 3121 really is?

There's no need to, since my theory that he believes that the end of the world will occur 3121 days after 3/21 has been verified.

2. And the cover? Are you trying to figure its alleged hidden meaning?

Again, don't need to. Any picture of Prince touching a wall is a reference to his lost classic, Wally.

3. How weird is it for you that Prince is still using sexual imagery but pretends it's not physical, à la "want to go down south" means going to Florida?

It is very weird, since I'm very stimulated by suggestivity. Even a sentence like "Don't you wanna come?" is suggestive to me because of the way he's used "come" in the past.

4. You know Prince is going to be religious. Besides shutting up entirely about his beliefs or going TRC on you, do you think the way he does it on 3121 strikes a good balance?

You probably guessed I think it strikes a good balance.

5. Do you listen to 3121 loud enough for others to hear, for instance in your car or "too" loud in your apartment? If not, why?

I don't because I can't. Music doesn't sound good to me when it's loud.

6. In a year or two, Prince will release another album. Do you think by then 3121 will be on one of your high shelves gathering a bit of dust because you're not a thorough duster or will it still be in the deck closest to the system, where you keep the records you actually listen to?

It will still be on my Nano and I'll be playing maybe 4 or 5 songs regularly.

7. It seems like every other album Prince releases is called "his best since SOTT". In your expert opinion and just so we can settle this once and for all, which of the following was actually "his best since SOTT"?

What a cruel question. I think it's probably TGE followed by 3121.

Don't care.

3. How weird is it for you that Prince is still using sexual imagery but pretends it's not physical, à la "want to go down south" means going to Florida?

Refreshingly mature.

4. You know Prince is going to be religious. Besides shutting up entirely about his beliefs or going TRC on you, do you think the way he does it on 3121 strikes a good balance?

his religion is none of my concern. The balance is fine.

5. Do you listen to 3121 loud enough for others to hear, for instance in your car or "too" loud in your apartment? If not, why?

it varies

6. In a year or two, Prince will release another album. Do you think by then 3121 will be on one of your high shelves gathering a bit of dust because you're not a thorough duster or will it still be in the deck closest to the system, where you keep the records you actually listen to?

No idea, but I like the record.

The Gold Experience

This one is his most CONSISTENT (that is, I don't leap out of my chair for the skip button) since SOTT or Purple Rain. It's not as GOOD as either of those 2, but outside of 'The Dance', there's nothing on the disc that requires the FF button.

My 2 cents.

it's more palatable on 3121, for sure.

no, i hate when people blast their music so loud others can hear it. it's rude.

I think that it's funny and shows a certain maturity.

4. You know Prince is going to be religious. Besides shutting up entirely about his beliefs or going TRC on you, do you think the way he does it on 3121 strikes a good balance?

Good balance. I enjoy Prince's spirituality. I'm not placing The Word
up there with The Cross or Anastasia, but it's definitely a good song.

1. Are you still trying to figure out what the heck 3121 really is?
No. It seems fairly obvious to me.

2. And the cover? Are you trying to figure its alleged hidden meaning?
No. I don't think there is a hidden message, besides that Prince wants us to listen to and feel the music (his ear and hand are the only things in the light).

3. How weird is it for you that Prince is still using sexual imagery but pretends it's not physical, à la "want to go down south" means going to Florida?
Not really.

4. You know Prince is going to be religious. Besides shutting up entirely about his beliefs or going TRC on you, do you think the way he does it on 3121 strikes a good balance?
Yes.

5. Do you listen to 3121 loud enough for others to hear, for instance in your car or "too" loud in your apartment? If not, why?
Yes. I've been doing my own promotion. I put the CD on real loud so my neighbours could hear it and then went over to their places and pretended to just want to talk and then said "yeh... that CD I'm playing is pretty loud if I can hear it over here... that's Prince's new album btw...3121...it's pretty good...well...cya"

6. In a year or two, Prince will release another album. Do you think by then 3121 will be on one of your high shelves gathering a bit of dust because you're not a thorough duster or will it still be in the deck closest to the system, where you keep the records you actually listen to?
It will be on one of my high shelves collecting dust, not because I wont play it, but because every CD I buy I load into my computer and never touch the CD again, I just listen to them on my PC because at the moment I don't own a CD player.

7. It seems like every other album Prince releases is called "his best since SOTT". In your expert opinion and just so we can settle this once and for all, which of the following was actually "his best since SOTT"?
He hasn't matched SOTT yet.

1. Are you still trying to figure out what the heck 3121 really is?

NO

2. And the cover? Are you trying to figure its alleged hidden meaning?

NO

3. How weird is it for you that Prince is still using sexual imagery but pretends it's not physical, à la "want to go down south" means going to Florida?

It's typical Prince behavior.

4. You know Prince is going to be religious. Besides shutting up entirely about his beliefs or going TRC on you, do you think the way he does it on 3121 strikes a good balance?

Actually, yes... I really like The Word and it's message seems more friendly and inclusive (like LoveSexy) rather than the exclusionary, babbling mess of TRC.

5. Do you listen to 3121 loud enough for others to hear, for instance in your car or "too" loud in your apartment? If not, why?

NO. I don't really tend to 'blast' a lot of music in the car and my house has 19 rooms so I can play it as loud as I want there and bother no one but myself.

6. In a year or two, Prince will release another album. Do you think by then 3121 will be on one of your high shelves gathering a bit of dust because you're not a thorough duster or will it still be in the deck closest to the system, where you keep the records you actually listen to?

I store all my music in iTunes on my Power Mac. All my CDs go in closet shelves, organized away from dust and light.

7. It seems like every other album Prince releases is called "his best since SOTT". In your expert opinion and just so we can settle this once and for all, which of the following was actually "his best since SOTT"?

His best album since 1987 is the prince album (which you didn't list) followed by TGE.

2. And the cover? Are you trying to figure its alleged hidden meaning? - I'm betting it spiritually sexual.

3. How weird is it for you that Prince is still using sexual imagery but pretends it's not physical, à la "want to go down south" means going to Florida? - He's in denial. Deep down, he still wants to fuck the taste out of your mouth.

4. You know Prince is going to be religious. Besides shutting up entirely about his beliefs or going TRC on you, do you think the way he does it on 3121 strikes a good balance? - I dunno. I haven't bought the album yet.

5. Do you listen to 3121 loud enough for others to hear, for instance in your car or "too" loud in your apartment? If not, why? - No. Cuz I haven't bought the album yet.

6. In a year or two, Prince will release another album. Do you think by then 3121 will be on one of your high shelves gathering a bit of dust because you're not a thorough duster or will it still be in the deck closest to the system, where you keep the records you actually listen to? - By his next album, I hope to have just bought this album.

7. It seems like every other album Prince releases is called "his best since SOTT". In your expert opinion and just so we can settle this once and for all, which of the following was actually "his best since SOTT"?
- 3121. Only cuz I haven't bought it yet.

7 - 3121, i like it better than gold experience. if emancipation was scaled down to 1 CD, then i would say emancipation.
3121 reminds me of the best parts of emancipation.
