It's a fun song, has a nice "off-the-cuff" feel to it. Not too serious.

Masterpiece though? No way. When Doves Cry and Little Red Corvette are masterpieces (he has many more, those 2 are the widely recognized ones). Compare Illusion to either of those - you'll see something REALLY missing!

it's okay... not really for me
i don't dig it when Prince talks like this
"Irresistible Bitch" is honest
but these other songs, like "Glass Cutter" and such
i don't know... just seems like he's playing and not being real
hey, but maybe that's just a messed up perception i have

neutral Very average, not masterpiece or master piece of shit, but rather master mediocre. It has a good beat and all, but dosent quite (like the rest of Musicology) reach the heights of earlier Prince like ... Sign o the Times..

I take this song very personally.
News: Prince pulls his head out his ass in the last moment.
Bad News: Prince wasted too much quality time doing so.

I think it is a great track when you first hear it - the stripped down basic funk beat - but it doesn't stand upto repeat listens. The problem for me with it is the storyline in the lyrics. It's ugly. It's like watching a film where non of the characters are likeable. I just don't want to know about this horrible woman and her slimy boyfriend.

It always reminds me of 'My Medallion' where at least Prince sings in the first person.

I don’t think it should be to hard for anyone to accept that there is not a song written in the world that doesn’t come back to some realistic basis of the songs characters. This is true in all cases, and it is true in Prince’s case. Although, the character might be a figment of the imagination of the author of the song, it’s disregard for topic matter shows a failing in the authors perception of the people around him. Also including an unfavorable pretrial of him self in the song, I find the song to be in great distaste and a common missed thread in the miscommunications prince is famous for.
