Also:
Do U Lie Sometimes it Snows in April--that part ending with "now staring at his picture I realize" just kills me. It's like the note is wrong, but it works somehow. Not exactly the melody proper, but hey. Check this song out at:

Would any1 agree that Prince borrowed from Bob Dylan's "Knockin on Heaven't Door" in his inspiration for Purple Rain (the song). And I really am emphasising borrowed.

'Take Me With U' is a lovely melodic song.
'All My Dreams' and much of the 'Parade' sessions material is highly melodic, tho imo this is at least partly down to Wendy and Lisa's input. Also some great melodies on 'Emancipation', disc 2 especially, eg 'Curious Child'. Prince isn't quite a melodist up there with Paul McCartney and Brian Wilson, but he has his moments.

But then i thought about Prince... and i realised that he doesn't do melodies he does mainly ryhtm/funk But what is the BEST Prince melody in a song? Am I mistaken, or has MJ never even written a melody? The comparison must be between Prince and Quincy Jones, right? Those recent re-issue cd's that are out now sometimes contain the demo/rough/original versions of the songs that later appear on albums. I picked up Thriller not long ago and was able to hear MJ's demo/sketch versions of a couple of songs on it. It was very interesting. I believe "Wanna Be Starting Something" was recorded in the Jackson home with a few of the brothers and sisters playing and singing on it. This was before Q even got his hands on it. I never thought of MJ as much of a creator but it was refreshing to see how he contrusted some of his tracks. As far as P goes, anything u can hum is a melody...and our boy has put out quiet a few killer ones.

Uhm no...Quincy Jones never wrote a song for MJ I think Prince's catchies melodies are Let's Go Crazy and 1999. Some songs grow on you but those captures you immidiatly [Edited 6/15/05 1:40am] Ok, I'm confused. Melody is found in the music, right? - not the words. So if Quincy Jones wrote the music, he wrote the melody. Right?

Huh?.....Say What?.....Prince doesn't do melodies? As Jerome might inquire, "What planet are you from?" DAYUM - Prince is the melody maker, my friend. The catalog is replete with ridiculous melodies. Just check the material - particularly those written for other artists (The Family, for instance) - from 1982 to 1987.

Many music teachers etc that u come across will criticise Prince's music for its lack of melody, esp the early years, i mean come on, there wasnt a single melody on the 1999 album, no melodies on Parade either. I think his best melodies appear on recent albums like Emancipation, even stuff like Until ure in my arms again from NPS, but MJ is certainly the melody man 4 sho.

can i ask a musically inclined question?
(keep in mind im not versed on music theory either.....so, dont shoot me if i am wrong...) i've always had the impression that wendy and lisa's music strenghts were in their melodies.....and that prince has paid less and less of an interest in melodies since the girls left the band... ya? nay? Space for sale...

ya? nay? I think generally speaking that is a valid point. The first song that comes to mind, "In All My Dreams", has a lovely melody. However that doesn't mean that he hasn't written some lovely melodies without them. It just means that he has gone in a different direction. Besides, melody isn't everything - Prince is great at just FUNKIN' OUT Here's some ideas you might want to consider when listening to melody: -Uses a large range (low, middle, high register) -Interesting harmonies/chords -Interestng rhythm -Varying steps sizes (small steps, large steps etc.) -Doens't have to be in a major key (ie. "happy" sounding!) Anyway, I think "Damn U" is one of his most beautiful melodies... Toejam @ Peach & Black Podcast: http://peachandblack.podbean.com

Damn U "When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really don´t like the idea that he could have it all."

The question of you Curious child "When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really don´t like the idea that he could have it all."
