Eventho my brother called it a "bee gees squeeling sounding"
something, I do like this song an awful lot.

The jazzy freeflowing vibe. The slow, long intro and the
breezy fast solo at the end. Nice lyrics.

A bit un-Prince actually. Certainly it is a routine Prince
song, but still it does sound slightly different from most
things he did before.

But what do we actually know about this song? When was it
recorded? Does anyone know??

Thanx.

Routine?!!??? This is one of my favorite songs. Loved it immediately.

When I first met my boyfriend, I found out that he was into Jazz & Blues. This was the very first Prince song I ever played for him. Halfway into it he was totally mesmerized and asked "Who IS this?" I told him it was none other that our master, PRINCE! He was shocked. He's been hooked from that moment on.

Good shout IstenSzek, superb song. You can just imagine him in the corner of some dark jazz or blues bar on his stool belting this one out.

Heard the live version he did at the Celebration and it was unbelievable.

It was recorded live at P. Park with Michael B. and Sonny T. in 1994. I"m unsure as to who the othee keyboard player is but I know it wasn't Tommy.

The band was rehearsing the intro to 'shh' for the upcoming 'American Musica Awards' performance. Studio A was occupied by Chaka Khan doing tracks for the shelved jazz album with Me'shell Nedgeochello. Me'Shell was doing a show in MN that night and popped by P. Park. The band did a take of 'Pain' with Chaka on vocals, Meshell on bass and Prince on piano. From what I udnerstand, they enjoyed themselves so much that they continued playing and to remain in the 'jazz' vein, Prince asked for Michael B. to play a beat and then, Meshell started a bass part and then of course Prince came in with the piano beginning to the song.

The song was an idea in his mind which he turned into a song with Me'shell and Chaka in the studio. That is why the lyrics are so unclear at times... there were no lyrics !

In fact, if you listen really close - you'll hear a deeper voice (Chaka's)_sort of mumbling at times along with Prince's singing (mumbling).

Pretty amazing story... I always wondered why he let the bass be so pronounced at the first... I think that was his way of hinting or letting everyone know that it was Me'Shell (who is known for playing bass). Of course, he couldn't just say it was her for the same reasons he didn't credit her for her contribution to 'emale' and 'the love we make' on his Emancipation album.

Love this song...

Same here nod

I play this song a lot in the cafe I work in and from ppl's reaction I can tell that they really enjoy it. A very huge poet approach 2 me and asked me if I wrote it and I said "HELL NAH! that is Prince" and he was shocked". I play "An honest man", "UTCM", "HCYDCMAM", "The Q of U"(with my own Jazzy style) and "Power Fantastic" but "When the lights go down" are my Cafe's fave.

I owe this track big time becoz my Cafe hired me as a pianist when I played it 4 them.

I asked Matthew about this and he checked with Me'Shell's manager. Totally untrue. She had nothing to do with this track. That's most likely Sonny T on bass.

Well what do you think she's going to say ? She hasn't ever admitted to her involvment in 'the love we make' and 'emale' : Who is Shiva then ?

Come on, she can't say anything since she is with WB.
