Language only exists to cage the inexplicable. It halts our sense of wonder. Is red 'red'? What is colour? Does anyone wonder what 'red' really is or merely accept it as the one syllable label 'red'?

U're certainly refering to semiotics aren't u?

confused That's Chinese algerbra to me. The concept belies 'concept'. Think of a colour that sign would be, think of me and I'll absorb the energy after I shed this flesh and blood vehicle. nod

Alright Number23---

I’ve basically called you out twice on this topic, the very thread you began, and all I’m hearing are the crickets.

I contend you like nothing more than to watch people squabble. Though you appear naturally articulate, you are unable to contribute in any meaningful way to this discussion.

You questioned our taste, and challenged our interest in Art, as well as our intellect. Yet when questioned about your own ability to fall under the same scrutiny, you fail to provide any meaningful response.

How Say You?

I feel that I am being goaded into an argument by a person that neither cares about the discussion, nor has the wherewithal to review postings sent to his/her attention.

For the sake of the thread, which initially I felt had merit; I shall re-post my questions/concerns to Number23.

Number23,

With reference to your initial post, I ask you to:
1) Explain why you are amazed at the taste of your fellow orgers
2) Why you don’t think they are interested in “true art…” and WHY it matters
3) Why your fellow orgers lack the intellect to “truly understand Prince…”
4) And WHY you feel you are any better or more qualified in these areas.

I love the way Number 25 has deliberately avoided answering DuckPurple's response, which, personally I find far more "level-headed, incisive and intellegent" than the pretentious (and ridiculously flawed) drivel Number 25 spouted in his initial thread.

For the record, as a proud Michael Jackson fan, I find a hell of a lot more true artistry in tracks like Who Is It, Morphine and Stranger In Moscow than anything Prince has made post-1989.

If that's true then you are exactly the orger 23 was writing about. Sure a lot of us are snobs but that doesn't mean we don't have a higher musical IQ. I can appreciate songs like Who Is It, which happens to be one of my favorite MJ Jams, but I can also tell you that many Prince songs work on more levels than an MJ song. Anything from musical structure to word play will set the two artists apart.

Let me qualify that musical IQ is something that has to be developed. Some people only want to be entertained so they don't take music that seriously which is fine (and probably healthier). These people can be brighter in almost any other area. So just because somebody thinks Janet Jackson is as good as Prince doesn't make them an idiot. Nor is somebody that appreciates jazz any smarter than a hip-hop or heavy metal head.

I think we make things too complicated. To understand Prince's art is just to be open to the vibe he's putting out there. You have to look past the words and his little outfits or his current band. When you get rid of all that, at the core of his work you'll find the true Prince and he hasn't really changed. It's just not something you put into words. You feel it.

Ah, to hell with it! You know what I'm saying lol

Oh, and a lot of the "poor" tastes alluded to are simply associative. A lot of the music I enjoy is attached to previous memories so that an artist or style I like might be considered outdated now but I still love 'em. Growing up when and where I did has formed my tastes and the types of music I have the most affinity for. It's the very reason I hold Keith Sweat in higher esteem than the Beatles. Beatles fans couldn't fathom that. Now I like other artists that I discovered later such as Yes, Led Zeppelin, Hendrix, and Dylan to name a few but to this day the Beatles just don't do it for me. Go figure.

By that same token I would never argue that Keith Sweat has written more complex, artistic songs than the Beatles did. Just better songs. razz

Remember that Shakespear sold to the masses.
As I replied in your other thread they provide funds.

I understand that. The green has its place (right at the top.) But what I'm saying is for me, there was always a sense of pride in being a Prince disciple. I always felt a bit smarter than the rest of the people who were digging on MJ. I felt deeper. I know it's smug, but I'm being honest.

But now Prince has become the "hot new thing" and people who really don't know *&%* are acting as if they just discovered him. Puleezz.

I just want to feel good again about loving him so much. And part of feeling good derives from being in the minority...the elite minority.

Your posts makes it clear that you do still consider yourself part of an elite minority so what are you worrying about? Such a feeling would be impossible without the presence of the plebian masses for you to look down on, so if I were you I'd lie back and enjoy.

A pretty nasty attitude in my humble opinion, but I guess I'm not afforded the view you get from such dizzy heights.
