A Case Of U - best Prince cover ever.

This track alone makes One Nite Alone one of his best discs.

Pearls Before The Swine, Have A Heart, One Nite Alone and Avalanche are just a bonus!

Let me hear some appreciation...

Yes - I like this version a lot, especially the piano. And I love the fact that he was knocking-out stuff like this on the side while he was doing TRC. Like he was in a good place, musically, enjoying working with John and using real instruments, etc. Hope he goes back to build on what he was doing with this and TRC.

Everyones seems to like the live version of this song from First Avenue in 1983 (?), but he also did a great interpretation of it at Wembley in 1995, with his semi-acoustic. was sensitive and unconstrained, and it led into 'I Love You In Me'. Well worth tracking down!
biggrin

Have only heard a few tracks from One Nite Alone though. (And limited success finding it with Limewire....)

Yup, good cover. Nice, understated delivery with the bass at the end being a cool touch.

"Avalanche" is still the best cut on that album though. In fact, it's a top 5 best Prince
songs ever tune.

I don't understand why there haven't been more than 1000 posts on that songs yet.
Perhaps, in time, people will learn to appreciate it and give it the props it deserves..

Prince's cover of "A Case of You" was my favorite until I heard kd lang's new version on her new disc. THAT ONE made me CRY...it's so emotional.

Having said that, yeah...Prince does a wonderful version of the song, and he sure knows how to pick a well-written song if it's not going to be his own.

Joni is POETRY. I don't always love her vocals, but I ALWAYS love her tunes and lyrics. When the right singer, like a Prince or a kd, gets their pipes on a Joni song...oh my LAWD!

It's good, but it can't compete with the fire and passion of his interpretation of "Just My Imagination"...and there are two different versions of this one, but I'm talking about THE version. KnahwhaImean?

Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

I know that k.d. lang's version is technically stunning but I much prefer Prince's. He made it sound like it was his song and Joni covered it!

I absolutely LOVE Prince's version of this song but the one thing that makes me kinda laugh is that he totally left out the first verse (the lyrics make reference to 'drawing a map of Canada'). Now that he lives in Canada, he could actually sing Joni's original version... just a hope... smile

The claim on the title I can agree with. It just seems "A Case Of You" is truly an important song to Prince himself and he pours his own emotions to it. And on the 1st Avenue'83 performance it was sort of like his theme song to the approaching superstardom (for some reason that's how I've always viewed it - call me romantic). "Like this is my night, I gotta play my song now."

I liked CASE OF YOU before I even heard the song. This co-worker of mine printed me out Joni M's lyrics to the BLUE album and I fell in love with just the lyrics. THEN I HEARD THE SONG and was more in love with it. AND THEN PRINCE DOING IT!!! I couldn't ask for anything more.

JONI IS INDEED POETRY!! U got that right!! AND when the right people/singers discover her and feel her lyrics, they tend to sing her lyrics as if they wrote them themselves.

You suffer from lack of sleep. Prince's version is basically a muzak version omitting the most important things that make Joni Mitchell's version sublime; the lyrics.

I never understood Prince's need to lift just ONE verse of three. But then again, I am sure Joni likes Prince's version, jazz-o-phile she is.

Prince's version is obviously very different than the orignal. But "muzak" it is not. Let me guess... you don't have a lot of "soul" music in your music collection do you?

Prince's version is different because he personalized the song for his own personal reasons and that is why he uses the verse that is most appropriate to him. I can only imagine that the other verses weren't appropriate for him, so he didn't use them. Dedicating the song to his father might also help explain Prince's interpretation.

Yeah, I'm one of those that prefers the 1st Ave version smile I love the original version, but I do like Prince's version quite a bit. It's clear from his continued performance of it, that he admires it a great deal.

Kewl. You assume.

Just because we disagree you don't have to jump to conclusions. I have loads of "soul". I also got "class".

I just prefer Joni Mitchell's version over the version Prince recorded. Personally I liked the piano version he did in the 80's better.
That's all.

I personally liked the version Honky Tonk Women he did on the NPG trio video.

I first wanted to say Just My Imagination live at Het Paard Van Troje, but that has to much "soul"....

i do not really like the A CASE OF YOU cover by Prince. Joni is too perfect to add something to one of her songs.
