Man in a Uniform....(?)

Wedding Feast is not a song...just a snippet...catch the humor?

Indeed, U can even here him giggle at the end, realizing its silliness.

What the hell was he thinking?: "Orgasm" (actually, I know what he was thinking there) "Strollin", and "Animal Kingdom".

To the person who said "TRC, the whole album"...keep listening, it gets better and better. First time I heard it, I wanted to jump off a bridge, now convinced it's a masterpiece.

i love strollin', wedding feast, man in a uniform , arms of orion. hmmm... thinkin' about it , they're kinda camp. i guess that must be why i like them?

i didn't like jughead, we gets up , and alot of graffiti bridge.

i like prince albums that are clear and concise like "dirty mind" , "come" , "purple rain" , "rainbow children" , "around the world in a day" , "parade" , "controversy" , "1999"

they are all 1 disc/record. 1 theme , 1 vision , very well done and again , concise. they work as a whole but each track stands up on its own in any context.

Sorry Y'all, I have to disagree with everyone here..

I think Prince knows exactly what he's doing when writing,

performing and releasing his music.

You must remember, this is a man who probably writes at

least one song per day....his mind operates on such a

different level, than most any of us.....Not saying that

any of us are idiots, but just try to comprehend,

everything that goes into writing one song, then composing

the music, then performing every instrument and singing the

lyrics to go with it.....and that's just for one song...

so, imaginge having a list of songs you wrote from the past

week and doing all that.....So, what was he

thinking??
....

Prince himself could tell you...but, you still wouldn't

understand.

Y'all are too harsh sometimes.

What th hell was he thinking ? Some of the songs listed here like Strollin and Blue Light are brilliant. I agree that Jughead should have been tossed along with Push and Horny pony too. The question I have is why the hell did he shave his head around the ear on the inside cover of Emancipation. That was quite punk.

courting time: uugh!

most of "the truth" cd. what a terrible album. i listened to it again just yesterday, thinking perhaps it would have aged like a good wine.. but forget it, most of it is dreadful.

imagine if you had never heard anything by prince before, and someone played you "the truth" album, telling you that this was by one of the great songwriters of modern times. you'd never believe them. what junk! aside from "don't play me", "dionne" and "comeback" (all of which are only quite good), the rest is laboured horror.

"circle of amour"!! disgraceful!
"cool as the other side of the pillow"! fearsomely, terrifyingly bad. this is maybe the worst thing i've ever heard him do. it is so charmless and wrong.
"fascination" sounds as if some sort of animal was in charge of the backing- a cat, maybe, or a small bear. what a mess!

what the HELL was he thinkin'?!

"Billy Jack Bitch" and The Truth CD are both fantastic...he knew exactly what he was doing and thinking when he put them down on CD...

However, I say "What the hell was he thinking!?" everytime I've seen one of his videos over the past 7 years or so...lol

what the hell was he thinkin?! no what the hell were all of u thinkin when u added 2 this thread?! this is the exact thing that Prince dislikes. music is a success upon creation. its when ppl like u get a hold of it and say whether it is "good" or not.

stop trippin! the man is a genius. of course we're not supposed 2 understand what the hell he was thinkin.

i got an idea for a new thread. everyone who is wonderin about Prince and what he was thinkin, how about u post a song 4 every1 to pick 2 pieces and try 2 figure out "what the hell were u thinkin?!"idea lol

Oh please...lol...First of all, this thread--AND this site--does not exist to please Prince...

Secondly, Prince himself has gone on in the past to ask people what they think of his music upon completion...as well as to give his analysis of other musical artists' work...ask him what he thinks of the current state of what's played on pop radio and see if you doubt he has no qualms about voicing his dislike of other people's music...that whole "Prince thinks every piece of music is a success upon completion" shit doesn't hold water even for Prince...lol...

Third, stop thinking that NONE of us P.org members have ever created anything artistic and had others critique it..!!...Sheeesh, I've been thru more critiques of my work--even in PRINT--than you'll EVAH know about, so fuck that attitude of "let's see YOU create something and have people give their opinions of it!"...too, too many of us on here know what it's like to be critiqued, and we also know the value that hearing other people's opinions can have...

And lastly, it's the fact that enough of us have "gotten ahold of it and determined it's good" that allows Prince to make a living from his passion...you think people shell over their money for CDs simply as an excersize in supporting the arts??...lol...

Sounds like we're slaves to the ramblings of a madman. If a genius can't provide the context to understand his work then he is hardly the genius and more a self-centered eogtistical psychopath...but that is your opinion; not a fact.

Right ON! "THE TRUTH" is NOT a good disc! Good songwriting ,TERRIBLE EXECUTION!

I like Prince for his funked-up psychedelic pop with interesting sounds, not acoustic plainness. Imagine a funk groove and quicker tempo to some of the tracks, with a "Dance Electric" or "Kiss" chord pluckin, add some horn punches and.....VOILA! You star to have some kick in "The Truth"!

Thats what "Diamonds and Pearls" was missing: HORNS!

Why yes, i'll have another Caesar!

I know the man has made some music that makes no sense, but butchering Diamonds and Pearls?!??? Come on, that song is a classic--besides i'm sure there's a bootleg somewhere that has a version with horns. But I digress. To answer the question,

Why doesn't he release DVDs of his concerts (or live CDs for that matter)?

That's interesting...that's one of my favorites. What part are you talking about???

The half that included 'Thunder', 'Daddy Pop', 'Push', and this absolute laugher: 'Jughead'. The rest of the album was really pretty good outside of those tracks. But the thing is, they were such a departure from what I was used to. And I don't mean in terms of musical styling, I mean in terms of mediocrity. I'd never heard such bland crap from Prince before. It shook me from my head to my toes. And being someone who was literally there from the beginning I had a hard time accepting this material from him. It made the album hard to listen to.

I know cats who totally abandoned Prince after 'D&P' and 'Symbol'. I'm talking die-hards. Those two albums were kind of the last straw. Not coincidentally, IMO, his popularity waned with them. But unbeknownst to me, there are a whole new legion of fams who dug those albums. So who knows?

It's funny because after hitting this board and just talking to folks at shows I realize that there are very few people who've ridden this thing all the way out. Either they caught on early and drifted away in the 90's or they caught on in the 90's (late 80's) and have been loving life ever since.

I guess because I've always loved his music and what it represents, I will be a listener forever. '1999' made me pick up an instrument and totally changed my perceptions of what 'black music' could be. But in spite of my feelings about the 90's stuff he still kept me listening with some brilliant moments. I just missed the continuity he enjoyed in the 80's when even his singles releases had people flocking to record stores on release dates just for the B-sides.

That time was just magic. Pure magic.

But whether it was the 70's, 80's, 90's or even now, haven't we been kinda wondering, 'What the hell was he thinking!??'

Wow. Never thought anyone could view the "Truth" album as being thát bad. It's actually one of my favorit Prince albums. Right up there with "Sign", "Gold" and "Lovesexy".

But everyone has their own view on these things. No doubt I've stepped on some toes claiming that Emancipation was not a good album at all.

So perhaps whomever said it was right; maybe we shouldn't do these kind of threads since if we'd go on long enough, eventually we would have listed ALL songs smile

What the h*ll was he thinking? who knows except him.But i tell u one thing i for one am glad his mind is as active as it is and that he drifts around dependant on his moods, it makes him more interesting.Like all forms of art u need to experiment, to push the boundaries, not only to satisfy yourself(the artist) but also your audience.U only have to read the threads already posted to see that we all like different stuff (tracks) and that is what makes the guy so cool and keeps us coming back for more.Instead of asking what the h*ll was he thinking better still would be the question why was he thinking that way.

some songs u write guys aren't meant 2 b hits. some are fillers, all songs can't b great, but u have 2 get through the o k songs 2 get 2 the great ones. some can even b personel statements 2 someone. some can b experimental 2 get 2 something else. there are a million reasons every song is not great. but at least he lets us hear the whole pile instead of keeping them 2 himself. so lightining up.

that's just it ppl, he wasn't thinking...
talent like his is automatic and God given
if he didn't write songs he would b writing poetry, it's n his blood, and is as natural 2 him as breathing...or more precisely as regular as taking a dump...one song a day!

because he can b so prolific he doesn't/can't b bothered with a song once it's born...it's n the world and there r countless others 2 b born...

consider those n the vault, stillborn, and frozens
the frozen do have a chance at life one day with a surrogate of Prince's choice, which means it may as well b stillborn 2.

Though eye don't like everything the man does, my hat is off 2 him 4 his creativity. no one compares 2 him....or his vast styles.
