Best 90's Prince/O(+> albums???

We always seem to be having a thread on one album or another. but what about the 90's? At the start of the 90's Prince was one of the worlds biggest stars.By 1999 Prince was prince and selling 500,000 copies of Rave. Not to mention splits with two lables plus one lable go bust and leave P high and dry?

Whats your top 5 and your 3 worst 90's Releases? Heres mine:

1/ The Gold Experience
2/ prince
3/ Diamonds & Pearls
4/ Crystal Ball+The Truth
5/ Emancipation

The stinkers:
1/ New Power Soul
2/ Graffiti Bridge
3/ The Black Album

My Faves:
1. Symbol
2. Emancipation
3. Diamonds & Pearls

My Least-Faves:
1. New Power Soul - I never thought Prince could make an album I hate until this thing came along.
2. The Vault - Uninspired leftovers.
3. Crystal Ball - A little Crystal Ball goes a LONG way.

Ha ! Well opinions will differ:

Top 5:

1. Newpower soul ! The basics with absolutely awesome production ! Layers and layers of subtlety !

2. The Vault - pity if the bootlegs had already taken the thrill out of these songs for you ! they are superb ! Jazzy and poppy ! Complex. Actually a CD that manages to convince Prince non-fans, in my experience.

3. Chaos And Disorder ! Direct and very lively ! He sounds so totally in control !

4. Crystal Ball --- volume required !

5. Emancipation. For when you feel laid back --- weak on the funk and powerfulness, but strong on melodies. I do hate that triangle though.

Worst albums:
1. Diamonds and Pearls - with the exception of a few songs it sounds so passee.

2. Rave Un2 --- although only the second half. The first half is exciting, but the production sounds a bit thin. Still The Greatest Romance is still one of his most haunting melodies !

Right. Attack ! I'm sure you don't agree with me !

Your right DMSR I don't agree with your choice's but each to their own. Here's mind if anyones interested:

1. Emancipation - 3CDs of great new music if anyone else released this album, the music world would have been blown away, but since its Prince they expect great things from him.

2. The Gold Experience - a close second, a classic from the man, could of been a huge hit but for the disbute with Warners, they could have promoted this alot better, there were alot more hits on that album than they actually released.

3. Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic - I don't see why people dislike this album so much, I thought it was brilliant, I still listen to this in my car. With songs like I Love U, But I Don't... (a beautiful song), Prettyman, Manowar, Baby Knows, So Far,So Pleased it should of been a hit. The publics lost, is our gain.

4. Crystal Ball/The Truth - Who else releasing a 4CD set after a 3CD opus but Prince. But it was definately worth it with classic songs such as Days of Wild, The Ride, Crucial, Interactive, Goodbye, Acknowledge Me. Then there's The Truth album which is awlesome, I wonder when he's going to release "Welcome 2 the Dawn" proper version??

5. Symbol Album - I didn't like it at first, but it grew on me, but I instantly loved The Morning Papers, 7, Love 2 The 9s, Sexy MF. The rest grew on me as time went by, some good stuff on this album, for sure.

The worst he released i nthe 90s:

1. Grafitti Bridge
2. The Vault
3. NewpowerSoul

Damnit...when will you people give the should have, would have, could have rationalizations a rest? Fact is, they weren't hits. They weren't hits. They weren't hits. Has it sunk in yet?

Whether or not "the world" expects great things from him, they'd still buy the record if they gave a shit about him anymore. But Emancipation, this glorious 3 CD set, is now selling for less than $10 in many stores. Back when it was released, many people tried to claim that it wasn't going to be hit because a 3 CD set costs too much. Now that it's cheaper than a single CD, what's your excuse for why it's not burning up the charts?

Dispute or no dispute with WB, they still released and promoted the album. Prince was an investment for them, and contrary to what you're trying to convince yourself, a corporation is not going to purposely lose money just to spite a fallen star having a tantrum.

The public lost nothing by avoiding Rave un2 the Joy Fantastic - I wouldn't be surprised if The Very Best of Prince collection sold better than that attempt at a Supernatural-style commercial rebirth.

well i agree Chaos and Disorder wasn't as bad as many critics said it was but New Power Soul? Yeah theres ocations on that album but its soooo sappy. Theres nothing of great interest and the production is simplistic and could of been done by a 3 year Old! same could be said about emancipation in parts but a 3 disk set deserves respect!

I cannot believe anyone can put THE BLACK ALBUM as one of his worst of the 90's!

That ranks as one of his best ever releases for me....it was a real thunderous release. You guys got to Rock Hard in A Funky Place!

Choo Choo!

the best:
1.Symbol
2.New Power Soul
3.Crystal Ball
4.Diamonds And Pearls (OK there are too many fillers but the good songs are really good)
5.The Vault
6.Rave In2 The Joy Fantastic (up to "Every day Is A...)

the worse:
1.Chaoz And Disorder
2.Exodus (although it has its moments the segues just destroy everything)
3.Black Album
4.Emancipation (far too many ballads and filler songs.Could be much better with about 10 songs less)

Of course the best of all 90's release is the "Hits"

Diamonds and Pearls is the best for me. Gett Off was being played all over the radio so effortlessly in spite of all the edits. It was hilarious, and funky as hell!

Admittedly, I was quite new to Prince music at the time, and it was the first concert I had ever seen. Which is probably why it meant so much more to me than just it's commercial appeal.

There weren't five albums worth mentioning in the 90's.

Best:
1.) The Truth
2.) The Black Album
3.) Graffiti Bridge
4.) Come

Worst:
1.) New Power Soul
2.) Diamonds and Pearls
3.) Symbol
4.) The Gold Experience
5.) Chaos and Disorder

His 90's music just flat out does not compare to the stuff from the 80's.

best:
1) TGE-fantastic
2) prince -just ignore tony m!
3) d&p -first prince album i bought
4) GB -mainly cause of 'joy in rep' and a few other songs on here
5) emancipation-a whole lotta music 2 get your head round, but worth it in the end

worst:
is there any question? NPS :p

and in case u cared wink , my verdict on the other 90s albums:
come-i like this, just misses out on a top 5 spot
CB-cool
C&D-not bad, but not great either
The Vault-just recently got this and not had a chance 2 listen 2 it yet
the hits/the b sides: cool, but i'd rather listen 2 the actual albums
Rave-waste of time. a golden oppertunity missed by prince 2 show the public just how fucking fantastic he really is. sad

1. The Gold Experience (Could have easily been a double or triple album with killer outtakes like Interactive, Acknowledge Me, Days Of Wild etc.)
2. prince (worth it for The Sacrifice Of Victor alone, there should have been more singles off this one.)
3. Diamonds And Pearls (commercial, yet still eclectic)
4. Crystal Ball/The Truth (something for everyone)
5. The Vault..Old Friends 4 Sale (grew on me slowly, but a lot of my 'non-prince-fan' friends really liked it)
