Vinyl or CDs - what do you prefer?

Just added my comment to the ATWIAD discussion and it reminded me how much I loved buying a vinyl album.

To me they seemed more special. Because they scratched eaily you (I) treated them with more care, no finger prints, only hold by the label etc. Also some albums came with wonderful gatefold sleeves. The one for ATWIAD had a clever little perforated flap that you could tear off (so glad I didn't) and the boy with the balloon was ONLY on the celephane wrapper! Parade had that brilliant gatefold that when opened out had Prince joined to himself at the torso!

CDs feel more like a commodity to me. Okay the music is what matters but they are small and kinda nothingy?

What d'yall reckon.

BTW sure age will enter this. For the record I am 32 and was therefore 15 when ATWIAD came out.

When I'm feeling nostalgic, I like hearing the "snap-crackle-pop" of my old 12 inch singles. But do I want to hear it all the time? No.

I don't necessarily miss the record inside as much as I miss the beautiful large album covers that contained goodies from time to time.

Snap Crackle Pop - LOL, true I don't miss that!

Don't know if this is true or not but I was once told that there was a wider range of music/sound frequencies on vinyl than on CD and that made the sound purer?

Similarly CDs have a better range than MP3s. So you could argue from a music purist point of view that technological 'advances' in delivery have 'dumbed down' the quality of the music?

As I said, don't know if this is true.

Vinyl. The smell, the looks, the size (hehehe). And they look kewl. BUT.
Most important; they sound warm. I always play the Sign "O" The Times album instead over the CD, which sounds crappy. ANALOGUE over anything.

I think CD's are much easier and the sound is better.. but there is something about the vinyl.. I mean its just SO NICE to take a vinyl and put on the recorder.. really looking back on the 80's! (Since I'm an 80's freak and the only vinyl I've got from the 70's is "For You" With Prince..!) Anyway I'm honestly not upset that we doens't use vinyls anymore.. cd's are much better,, but sometimes miss the vinyl!! smile

Gotta agree with gooeythehamster, I always listen to "sign O The times" on vinyl instead of the CD!..(Also Parade and 1999 + all Wham!'s!)

I grew up on vinyl-- used to play and listen to my mom's albums and singles-- until I was old enough to buy my own. "When Doves Cry" was the first Prince single I ever bought and "Purple Rain" the first album. I had this rinky dinky portable record player that my mom gave me. I remember the first time I listened to the "Sign O' the Times" album, I thought there was something wrong with the speed because of his high pitched voice (as Camille) which I didn't realize until later was intentional, but I used to play around with the speed to make it sound "normal". I even wondered if it was the vinyl that was messed up.

When I came to the US in 1987, started buying tapes, then CDs-- my preferred format just because of its ease and durability. But I still have my LPs from way back although I did get rid of some when we immigrated here. Peace!

Great thread Jaypotton!!!!! I have a lot of vinyl. All my Prince stuff mostly is on vinyl. I refuse to buy his 80's CDs because of the sound quality. I'M WAITING ON THOSE CDS TO BE DIGITALLY REMASETERED.....HINT HINT!!

Sometimes I pull out my vinyl and play them. I have all my classic vinyl (and CDs) recorded on high quality Maxell tapes. Still I think CDs is the best format that has ever been offered. It is certainly more accessible and portable for the consumer. However, at times the high end bass and overall sound seems more fuller and pronounced on vinyl. I recently bought a mint brand new vinyl copy of Jaco Pastorious's 1976 classic recording tiled JACO PASTORIOUS(which I highly recommend to jazz and bass guitar fans) and I could hear things on the vinyl that was missing on the CD version!!!!!

Again great thread!!!!

I think I made the move 2 CD at the same time as Prince:

I have all the albums up 2 and including SOTT on vinyl (+The Black Album), and from Lovesexy onwards on CD.

LS was obviously intended 4 CD, but I would claim that SOTT can only b listened 2 properly on vinyl.

I prefer listening 2 vinyl (sorry, but I prefer the sound). I buy lots of vinyl 2nd-hand - old Sly, P-Funk, Billy Preston, Stevie etc. I'm short on cash and they're much cheaper, but I think they're cooler 2.

This may sound crazy because I'm only 23, but I too prefer vinyl over CD. I loved the posters or sleeve inserts that sometimes came with the album. I have the single for Paisley Park on colored vinyl. It has a picture of the little boy being carried away by the balloon. The record is actualy the shape of the boy and part of the balloon. It is the coolest record I've ever seen. Needless to say, it's my most prized Prince collectible.

Vinyl is better than cd. Okay the size of the cd is convenient and it is able 2 carry more music, but Vinyl has that "extra" that warm bass, the clear sounding instruments, there's quite the diff between hearing things on vinyl and cd, I prefer vinyl. I have lots of lp's and 12" and also lots of cd's the difference is there...try it!
