Justin Timberlake talks about Prince in GQ Interview

From the January Issue of British GQ magazine ,
(not the exact quotes, as I didn't buy the mag)

Q:Youre obviously a big fan of Prince
A:yeah,I respect him for his originality. Before he came on the
scene, there really wasnt anything like him about. He's selling his
music on the internet now,but you've got to let him be what he
wants to be

Q:Theres a lot of suggestive lyrics in your songs
A:maybe,seductive yeah,I could go with that,I'm a young guy,
sometimes you gotta tell it like it is.It's like some of the
stuff Prince wrote "You dont have to watch dynasty,to have an
attitude" ,you can't argue with a line like that...and "Move your
big ass round this way so I can work on that zipper baby",genius!
When you hear that, you sing along with it,yeah ,move your ass round
this way so i can work on it...he wasn't afraid to write lyrics that other people wouldnt want to say ,its like those people that watch
porn but won't admit it!
Check out Chocadelica , updated with Lotusflow3r and MPLSound album lyrics April 2nd 2009 :

don't diss this guy before you heard his record! its very good.
most of it is produced by the neptunes. check out their work - esp. N*E*R*D (not the "band-" but the "sequenced"-version, which i think was only released in europe). their rock/funk/r+b/soul/pop reminds me a lot of prince in the 80s.

I coulnt agree more. It is a shame how pop music has convinced itself that itis still as relevant as it once was. Why would anyone care what Timberlake had to say about Prince or anything regarding real music?

I've got nothin but respect for Justin. Who else is talking about Prince? Justin is all over the place right now including the cover of Rolling Stone and Vibe. So he's giving props to the man that we all gather here daily for and we're gonna diss him for that? You guys sound like a bunch of little High School bitches with your comments. Justin's album was one of the better albums I heard last year, in fact it's the album I've been waiting for MJ to make since Off the Wall. He may be pop and considered a no talent to many, but he's doing what he loves everyday, are any of you haters doing that? I think not. And I will say that I'm a fan of Justin and I was very put off by the MJ influence in the first peformance and video, but he MORE than made up for that mis-step with Cry Me a River. With that said, I'm going back to listening to Xpectaion and then Justified again.

Cause Everlasting said so! Yep, I thought so, I DID feel stupid saying it.

Boring, not much being said there.

Blatant Prince rip-offs. Gett Off (positions) and the remix (The nasty way you walk, the way you, flip you hair).

Lame. Justin = Elvis. lol

So it's not Justin sounding like Prince, it's the producers, right? I have no doubt that he can afford the best writers and producers to create a great album for him. That is the difference between him and Prince, Prince can do everything himself.

You know majority of us come from a different era than the pop era so of coarse people are going to dog Justin. I'm like most...can't stand pop but we have to remember the younger generation kinda had NO choice in the music thats being fed to them. I always say how sorry I feel for them because they have no idea what real music is, but I don't dog them.

Yes I know there are few that escaped it by listening to what they call the Classic, but not all of them. I personally give props to Justin for opening up to other music such as Prince. As far as POP music he does sound better than the rest of the crap out there. I watched an interview where he stated he wanted to take his music in a different direction, but it will be really hard considering his N'Sync days.

By the way he has been trying to write his own songs unlike other artist. Gotta give him credit somewhere!!! At least he's trying. Many people have so many dreams but still sit there dreaming about it instead of trying to make them come true. Yeah maybe some of his lyrics sound like a rip off of Prince, but there's been times I think some of P's tunes sound like a rip off of some other musicians tunes.

Much Love,
LoLinex

You're right. It's nice that Prince is mentioned and it's not Justin's fault that the media ignores Prince and the general public follows.

You guys sound like a bunch of little High School bitches with your comments. Justin's album was one of the better albums I heard last year, in fact it's the album I've been waiting for MJ to make since Off the Wall.

He didn't do it all himself though. He couldn't do it all himself, and Prince can.

He may be pop and considered a no talent to many, but he's doing what he loves everyday, are any of you haters doing that? I think not.

True. He is doing what he loves. Dancing and singing. Does he write any of the lyrics or music? Just curious. Lots of people could do what they loved if they had hundreds of people backing them up. If you count the writers, producers, studio musicians, dancers, journalists, photographers, disc jockeys, radio programmers, mtv vjs, etc. etc. that support these type of acts, that's a lot of help so you can do what you want to do.

And I will say that I'm a fan of Justin and I was very put off by the MJ influence in the first peformance and video, but he MORE than made up for that mis-step with Cry Me a River.

Which is a cover.

With that said, I'm going back to listening to Xpectaion and then Justified again.

Fair enough man. I personally don't like Justin at all. Him and Britney are tooo nasally for my taste. I do appreciate some pop, like Christina Aguilera and The Backstreet Boys (A.J. has a great voice and I think he should go solo).

Then again, I really like Nelly Furtado and she is very nasally, but the music is pretty experimental (for pop). I do know that Jarvis Church did most of the music/producing, but I think the basic ideas were her own. It sucks, ya know? The only way you know if an artist does everything themselves is if they are the only people listed on the credits. It bugs me that all a person has to do is write lyrics and maybe a melody and they get all the credit for the song.

Who wrote the keyboard part? guitar part? drums? Usually the producer, and that's why they get paid so much I guess. I would really like to know what peoples stuff sounds like before the producer steps in to see how much they had to begin with. Just something I'm always curious about. If you listen to the tracks on my website, that's all me right now. I'm looking for a producer/drum programmer to "kick it up a notch", then a band to play with live.

Anywho, just wanted to let you know where I'm coming from and I'm not raggin' on you man. I know sometimes it's good to listen to pop and have some fun. You can learn a lot of cool production techniques by listening to that stuff. I just know that someone behind the scenes is doing it.

Side note: I really dig your avatar. Do you know where I can get a bigger version of that pic? Very nice, I love the Lovesexy period. Peace.

Yes he can but he's always had a great supporting cast as well. Look at Parade that has a HUGE Wendy and Lisa influence but it's still a Prince album. It's not even fair to compare Prince and Justin, one is a musician and one is not. But how come everyone is so quick to point out that "He didn't do it all" when you don't hear that when people are talking about Eminem? You don't hear people always saying "Yeah, but the Eminem Show is only good cause of Dr Dre" who OBVIOUSLY produced it? Or with Off the Wall, no one mentions Quincy Jones when he was very resposible for the finished product as well?

And by the way Cry me a River is NOT a cover. There's a lot of songs with that title but it's not a cover. I have a bigger version of my avatar and I will send it to you later when I'm home. And I agree, the Lovesexy era is one of my favorites too.

True dat. I love Wendy & Lisa. They were The Revolution of Prince and The Revolution. What I was referring to was albums like 1999 where the credits say Produced, Arranged, Composed and Performed by Prince.

It's not even fair to compare Prince and Justin, one is a musician and one is not. Don't even get me started on Eminem and MJ. I'll listen to Justin, I think I heard the song on the radio once and thought it was pretty good. Eminem and MJ make me reach for the dial and turn that shit off!!!

And by the way Cry me a River is NOT a cover. There's a lot of songs with that title but it's not a cover.

Really? I was chating about it with someone and I mentioned it might be a cover. I thought he looked the lyrics up and confirmed. Oooops! My mistake.

I have a bigger version of my avatar and I will send it to you later when I'm home. And I agree, the Lovesexy era is one of my favorites too.

Cool man! Thanks. By the way, you got balls to stand up for Justin. I just checked out the video for Cry Me a River. I can see the MJ comparison because of the fallsetto thing. Not a bad song. wink

And what was this great dis of his? Did they do something to him? Like celebrate a birthday? Eat something from the Animal Kingdom? Try to remove his head from Larry's bottom? They say nice things about him, he says something bad, to quote Prince..."I think that says more about you than it does about me." But I am glad you LOVED IT!!! headbang

Wasn't really a dis if you ask me. ANYway. Why are we talking about N F'kin Sync? Maybe because this is a thread about Justin Timberlake talking about Prince. And I'm sure if you start a John Coltrane thread someone will play with you over there. Rock on dude! headbang

AmyThyst

If you recall, I took my daughter (17)to the Lakeland concert with me and she wrote a very fine concert review for the Org.

She has been to my concerts with me, and yes, I go to NSYNC concerts (3) with her. She has Justin (et al) all over her walls, computer, etc. I have Prince. We both sing along and know the lyrics to each of our CDs. And you know what? We respect and appreciate the talent of each.

We listen to and enjoy it all for what it is ... art and entertainment. If either of us doesn't really care for something, that's fine too. But one of my all-time favorite memories will always be that of my NSYNC-loving-teenager swaying back and forth with her arms around me as we listed to Prince sing the full version of Purple Rain.

Personally, I think good taste in music and men seems to run in my family!
