Most underrated associated artists...

***Mazarati---their 1986 debut album is one of the best albums released on Paisley Park Records.Minneapolis funk at it's best!

***Tony M---go ahead and laugh, but I never had any problem with this guy.I like his contributions to the D&P and Love Symbol albums.

***Cat---the best dancer in ANY of Prince's bands.

***Brenda Bennett---The best singer in Vanity/Apollonia 6.Her vocals on "Blue Limousine" are really impressive. She really deserved more recognition.

Most overrated associated artists...

***Wendy and Lisa---don't get me wrong,I like them and I appreciate their contributions to Prince's music.I just don't see why people always act as if Prince's music was never the same after they left. They have talent, but I don't place them on a pedestal.

***The Family---yes,their album was nice. Some solid jams there. But they weren't ALL THAT,you know...lol...I thought Mazarati's album was way more satisfying.

***Jill Jones---again,I like her.But I wasn't in love with her debut album. She has a great voice, but on that album, she just didn't know what to do with it.There was too much yelling, screaming and Prince-inspired yelping going on.On some songs, she sounds as if she's losing her mind...lol...

Laugh??? That's too sad to laugh at! smile
Tony M was just an embarassment. Period. It's SHOCKING... SHOCKING... that Prince allowed him come anywhere near his own work. Cat, Sheila, and Prince himself are better rappers!!!

Because it wasn't and still isn't. It's pretty obvious if you listen. You can argue whether it's better or worse, but you gotta admit "it's never been the same" as you say.

***The Family---yes,their album was nice. Some solid jams there. But they weren't ALL THAT,you know...lol...I thought Mazarati's album was way more satisfying.

Everyone has their own preferences I guess, but that's still kidna shokcing to me. For me, The Family is one of the most consistent side-projects of all time. I listen to that whole album straight through...every cut is great.

Mazerati was very forgettable to me...I dont' think I played it since the 80s. And it wasn't very innovative IMO, whereas the Family album featured new components like Clare Fisher's strings, lots of fusion/jazz flavor courtesy of Eric... and I think Paul's voice has a really beautiful, resonant tone that most proteges can't match.

***Jill Jones---again,I like her.But I wasn't in love with her debut album. She has a great voice, but on that album, she just didn't know what to do with it.There was too much yelling, screaming and Prince-inspired yelping going on.On some songs, she sounds as if she's losing her mind...lol...

I LOVE Jill... but I do agree with your last commment. I think it's a great album but it could've been even better with some more careful production. Jill is amazing though I and am so happy I finally got this album on CD last month after 15 years or so of trying! smile

True, I think the main problem is the subjective part...whether or not W&L's work with Prince overshadows his own work. Some think it does, some think it doesn't. THAT'S where the fights/negativity about/towards W&L come from.
I don't think anyone here (including the original poster of this thread) says their time with him was worthless/not good; it's just that when some say that Prince's own work is better than the treesome's work some of the W&L supporters get all up in arms about it.
I like W&L (I liked "Fruit at the bottom" better than the "Batman" soundtrack and I liked "Eroica" better than "Graffiti Bridge"), they're very talented girls who can do/did a lot, unfortunately they fell victim to the curse of working with Prince. I don't really see anybody completely dismissing their solo work and/or their time with Prince, but I do see people getting their panties in a bunch when they aren't praised. Yes, I know many Prince fans make catty remarks towards them, but it's in answer the W&L fannatics, I'm not that makes it rigth, I'm just saying I see why negative comments are made about them. Most harsh/negative comments made about them on this site can be traced back to a post/comment from
a W&L supporter. once again, it's not right, but I understand why.
I really see all the fights about W&L as being quite silly, it's all opinions.

No,you can take out Jill Jones and put The Family, the best tracks on that album are the instrumentals and maybe Desire.

Underrated:
1. Ingrid (she's a WAY underrated writer)
2. Taja (she's a WAY underrated vocalist. Just check out her RANGE! And, yes, she sounds at least as dynamic and crisp live. And she writes fairly well too.)

Overrated:
1. Jill Jones (She's gorgeous and has a cool presence, but squeals and athsma attacks don't equate good singing.)

Most underrated:
**Mazarati - a great album with a lot of funky, solid tracks.
**The Family - IMO Prince's best side project. Sowed the seeds for the Madhouse project with the instrumentals ("Yes" and "Susannah's Pajamas"), and Clare Fischer's string arrangement on "Screams of Passion" is phenomenal.

Most overrated:
**Jill Jones - I don't know why everyone feels this side project is so strong. I remember being disappointed when I first heard songs from this project, because I had such high expectations given the reviews I had read from fans. I ended up really liking only a few of the songs I heard ("For Love", "G Spot", "Violet Blue").

overrated: Jill Jones
For Love was terrible for me...My Man, Mia Bocca & G Spot were my favs though. Dont get me started on "All Day All Night" though. Completely destroyed that cut. That album should have been Sheila's or Taja's.

Mazarati. I really disliked that album. They couldnt hold a note and tried 2 b Prince waaay 2 much..no no no.

underrated: Brenda Bennet...GOD WHERE IS SHE!!!?? We need 2 find the homegirl!!!

Taja..had alot of potential. yet I hear no NO talk about her. Pretty lady though. "If I Could Get Ur Attention" was THE JAM!

to some1 who said Jesse is underrated..i dont think so at all. he's right there on top of Andre, and right under The Time

Myte album was solid

Are you guys SERIOUS??? You obviously never saw Mazarati in person then. They were absolutely awesome and never got the chance or accolades they truly deserved. Sorry you never had the priviledge to see them in person.
