Mayte and Prince had a decade long relationship. I would think, during this time, she most likely was privy to parts of (maybe all, none of us truly know) his writing/recording process. Didn't she mention a book about unveiling his musical artistic methods (or something along those lines)? I think it would be very interesting if she reveals some of her knowledge about the songs he wrote during their time together.

Also, I notice it is status quo for certain posters here to deviate from the intended topic and proceed to interject their opinion regarding Mayte's worth and value to Prince and how his musical musings about her were obligatory in some way (yet, songs written for other "muses" were absolutely genuine and heart felt). ALL his women had their time and place in his life....until they didn't.

Just gonna put this here....should load at about :39 as this is where he talks about her (how she has "added" to him and how she is "ever present" in his thoughts). I choose to believe his words.

This video appears to have been shot not long before the publicized Annulment and Divorce, correct? Prince said many things during interviews, and his statements usually coincided with promoting his music at the time. Also, I think your timeline is a bit skewed with regard to their relationship. It is well known that Prince was with many women from '91-'95. Heck, there's a former employee of PP in '94/'95 who stated Prince had a group of beautiful girls regularly at PP who carried Pagers with them and would "disappear" when paged. So, let's at least be realistic with the relationship time frame.

Why are people so quick to believe that Prince's every word is just a lie?? I am not saying he didn't spin or fib. But maybe there are nuggets of truth in what he says. Its his story, his life--not the random employee's who stated P had groupies disappearing into private rooms whenever their pagers went off. This could be true..I am not unrealistic. I know he wasn't monogamous, but I am not going to just believe every rumor that corresponds with generalizations about the man and disbelieve every nice thing he says about his wife/girlfriend. Maybe I am wrong but I suspect that some of this stuff is exagerrated. The one lady who was in the Sexy M.F video (troy?) said in her facebook that his reputation for promsicuity was exagerrated a bit. A part of me thinks that at times he didn't even engage in sex in his private times with women. Call me naive if you want, but I do think the reality of most situations is in the grey area (unless you are bill cosby). Ironically, its the people who sing or talk about sex the most who aren't always the ones engaging in it the most.(like the opposite of Bill Cosby..LOL). Before you folks call me naive, I don't doubt that he was dating Nona and Carmen at the same time and then Mayte came on the tail end of that. WHat I doubt is that any of them were naive enough not to notice. Maybe they thought they could reform him and win him over to the point where he became monogamous and he and she became king and queen of Paisley Park. For a brief period, Mayte might have succeeded (not saying she tricked him or anything necessarily--just saying she offered him --either accidentally or intentionally--what he wanted and thought he needed.) BTW, he never lied about his son dying. HE was vague and spun the truth. Its not like he said "My son is alive and well>" I bring that up to make the point that Prince knew better by that point than to be caught in a obvious lie (he learned the hard way with his earlier statements about an Italian mother etc).

She had just turned 23.

I was also older than my age and I believe I had to grow up a little faster than her. I had no mother and grew up with violence and abuse. No pity please, just so you get the perspective.

It's fair to say he was in professional control, yes. Beyond that, though. I'm not so sure.

So, I guess she had him by his "Tootsie Roll" for awhile?? biggrin

More by the balls... her and her mother.

Exactly (though '91-'95 is not correct either wink He had a good life way up until '99

For those who think it's a good idea to go by his interviews, I suggest watching the Larry King one again and the one on The View '99. In both he is asked what Mayte calls him (she didn't call him anything at the time). Both times he replies "Mayte calls me Honey" and his hand goes to his neck in a gesture of embarrassment (something I never saw him do anywhere else), his voice gets thin and he avoids eye contact. On The View his face even has this awkward, disgusted expression like someone who is very uncomfortable, knowing what he says isn't true.

I realize this is going to be locked and apologize to TWD for perpetuating the off topic comments of the thread. I simply want to clarify one detail for violetcrush regarding the decade long relationship.

I am confused by your statement about getting the timeline correct....what did I misrepresent? A relationship is many different things....I did not say they had a decade long romantic relationship, did I? No. Based on that, they did indeed have a decade long relationship....started as friends/pen pals, became employer/employee (mentee/mentor...whatever), lovers and finally husband/wife. Furthermore, there was NEVER an annulment. Specific criteria must be met for an annulment to be granted....a child produced from a marriage is generally a glaring reason for an annulment to be denied.

That sure didn't stop Prince from trying to annul their legal union, which is, to most, an indication that he considered the marriage a mistake.

My take on the album is that he had a completely different idea for it, and lineup of songs already sequenced - especially when you consider that "Goodbye" was originally planned to be the last song on the album on a '95 configuration. Then, in early '96, all of the marriage/baby songs were recorded and added to the lineup. I'm not that impressed with "Saviour" either -again, just don't think the lyrics are that inspired. It's almost like he's trying to convince himself in the song.

*

Here's the early configurations of the album from princevault:

  • July 1995 configuration
  1. Right Back Here In My Arms
  2. Slave
  3. (Slowly Candle Burns)
  4. New World
  5. 2020
  6. Feel Good
  7. Journey 2 The Center Of Your ♥
  8. D.J.
  9. Emancipation

  • undated 1995 configuration
  1. Slave
  2. New World
  3. (Slowly Candle Burns)
  4. 2020
  5. Feel Good
  6. Right Back Here In My Arms
  7. Journey 2 The Center Of Your ♥
  8. D.J.
  9. (Excuse Me Is This) Goodbye
  10. Emancipation

But, "Goodbye".....oh lawd, it doesn't get much better than that!!!!!!!!! love

*

I just want to give him a big hug when I listen to that song. Or better yet, be the subject of that song love love love

Thanks for sharing. I've never seen the early configurations of the album. Yes,I absolutely love "Goodbye!" I do wish he had included it and "Journey 2 The Center Of Your Heart."
