With Sheila E, she's talked about stuff in the same years time (performances) and still no detail. And as much as I want her to sit down and really go there, if she doesn't she doesn't. I'm not judging her. She was there, she lived it.

I don't rememebr if if was after the movie or before, but when they aske Sheila E a question about the PR movie premiere all she could say was "Prince, Prince"

the truth is that I am frigging tired of Purple Rain even though I love the album. I am tired of people acting like the man was a complete has-been before he was forty. maybe commerically Prince was, but the lovers of his talent and art should be mining the vastness of his work for the gems even in albums that are mostly muck (like people on this site often do) , not over-saturating the market with the same songs over and over again. I am not diminishing the importance of those songs to people who lived through them, i get it. But there is too much exploitation of the nostalgia for my taste and I feel oddly sorry for Prince that he has become almost a caricature, a caricature who brings people fond memories of their childhoods and experiences when his music was new. Ageism pisses me off. Even older folks are guilty of it. My parents even do it to the musicians they grew up with...they only like them when they are young. And then the musician dies and people throw out the last 30 years of their lives as if they don't count to recapture the musician's youth and perhaps their own.

Fault finding, you're just looking to pick something a part to be mad at someone because you were not a fan to actually experience Prince when he was alive. there is not other reason for you to be so intently pissed with these people who worked for Prince played with Prince and was friends with Prince, because they are not doing things the way you think is proper.

You haven't read all the wonderful things they have said about Prince especiall when he was alive. Nor after. Bobby Z said in Possessed, that what he saw in Prince was something he could dedicate his whole life career to. He talked in wonder about watching Prince record music playing the drums and piano. After Prince died he said Prince WAS a musician, everyone else was just playing around.

I mean what do you want from them? I mean a whole lot of fans look at AD 2016 fans sideways. Do we have that right, to look at johnny come lately's who have so much to say?

They don't owe me shit...but I don't owe them respect if I think their actions suck. Your slamming on me doesn't change the fact that Prince nostalgia of the 80's is what they are marketing and post-Revolution music is what they are completely ignoring.

no student told me about Prince. I told them. They didn't know shit about Prince (beyond a few of them knowing Purple Rain songs...and none of them even knew Kiss.) and now all they know is f'ng purple rain songs done by Bruno mars.

But were they really that close? According to Leeds, many people who were interviewed for the Alex Hahn book were avoided by Prince thereafter. Wasn't Mark in that book?



Prince & BrownMark stayed in touch, Prince gave him a few songs for his 89 album, Prince spoke of BrownMark in a 1998 interview

The Artist still raves about the original Revolution bassist, Brown Mark (who took over for Andre Simone), calling him the tightest bass player next to Graham himself.



Prince was going to get the Revolution back together for the Roadhouse Garden album, and BrownMark played bass with Prince at Paisley Park during the Celebrations. BrownMark years before Prince died, talked about his relationship with Prince and also said he was jamming with Prince and some other musicians @ Paisley Park with Prince prior to his death.



Plus, how much can he really be a fan/brother/sister/whatever if he can't remember the wonderful and very intimate Piano and Microphone performance? It seems like the only time musicians ( who came up around the same time as Prince or were around 20 years) remember P's music is if they are involved directly in it themselves. (Even Michael Bland was honest enough to admit that years ago on this very site; although I imagine P's death made him listen to a bit ore)



I guess it could be thrown back at you, 'how much can you really be a fan since you were not a fan of Prince until after he died as a result of you getting interested in Prince via a student...

At least Morris Day posts various clips of P on his facebook page that do not include himself in them. And those two did fight like brothers. Also, he stated implicitly on facebook that Prince was underrated even by himself. All these SOB's are opportunists to some extent (hell, Prince was too), but pretending to mourn while quietly celebrating (launching 2 old groups that were dormant [or mostly dormant] when P was alive???--damn, talk about reliving what might have been had P just got out of the way 20 years ago!!!) rubs me the wrong way and at times, I get that vibe with Mark above others. Not entirely sure why though.

I'm excited about releasing a new record. It’s going to be a funk record — funk, pop, dance, R&B/whatever. It's a type of record that I have not done before so I'm excited to put that out.


I’m painstakingly putting my group, Mazarati, back together. Unfortunately, I can't put the whole group together but I got most of them back so I'm going to join forces with that group and we're going to take it on the road.


When I'm not on the road, I'm in the recording studio. Thats all I do. I have a huge song library that I haven't released yet which it but that's what I do. I just write music. I create new music and sounds and just catalog — put them in a library and save them for when I'm ready to use my past. I don't play sports or anything. I grab my guitar, go in the studio and play.

You need to check your memory or understanding.. I never said that. You won't find a post that said that. I said I saw P in the superbowl and started talking to my students about him after he died.. A few of them knew who he was, one girl said she saw Purple rain the night before...none of them knew as much as I did.. becuase they were 15. I was 39. Before he died, I knew Cream, Kiss, Purple Rain, Little red Corvette, 1999, When Doves Cry, U got the look, trust, nothing compares to u, diamonds and pearls, Partyman, 7, thieves in the temple, Sugar Walls, Glamourous life, and raspberry beret (and probably more) . I don't think the kids knew anything more than When Doves Cry and Purple Rain. I told them about Kiss. a couple of them did express sadness over another black icon dying but I am not sure how many songs they knew. Talking about him with them encouraged me to learn more of his music, but I knew his hit songs like most people of my generation.


Also, in addition, I remember (stupidly) saying at the time in 2016 in class that Prince was the cooler Michael Jackson. Stupid thing to say because the comparision is lame but even at the time, I remembered Prince fondly, but I was a casual fan at most. the conversation did make me nostalgic but it turned into a deeper appreciation I didn't anticipate.

I am sorry I insulted you by insulting the Revolution. here's the deal. I really hope my instincts are wrong. disagree all you want. but keep it to the facts please. Also, I guess I do resent that the Revolution members seem sanctified by you. No one can criticize them even a little bit..that does seem biased heavily in their favor.

Maybe it was too much like they said. But they announced a tour four days after he died. One could argue that they needed to start rehearsing.

I didn't respect Prince?? How would you know? I didn't know Prince beyond the hits. I don't know the music of Bruce Springsteen beyond the hits -- it doesn't mean I don['t respect him. i didn't know where to start where Prince was concerned whilst he was alive. His stuff was hard to find...remember. Another thing--I remember comparing the most beautiful girl in the world to this song..below..when i was a sinatra fanatic.

I have not. I had issues with them but read back. I said I don't know what to think about Brown and that I was torn. I even defended Mark Brown once on this thread.. you only see the criticisms.


NIce things I have said about the Revolution...

--Lisa is a piano genius

--Wendy is a better guitarist than some people tried to say on here.

--both ladies should be honored to be two of 55-60 female composers in hollywood

--I agreed that Mark Brown and Mazarati deserved more credit than they got for Kiss (but not all credit for the music like Brown claimed but more than they got)

--acknowledged that they did want to reunite when he was still alive

--acknowledged that Dr. Fink has been complimentary

--that I like Lisa's singing on 1999

--enjoyed the Bobby Z jokes about P's funk face

--acknowledged that the liner notes of Purple Rain Deluxe were movingly rendered

--loved Lisa compliments on P's use of minimalism and how much she loved When Doves Cry and Darling Nicki.

--stated that Lisa was pretty(I believe, I know I thought it)

--stated that the Fancy lesbian comment was funny



I am going to further compliment them now...here goes

--I admire how hard they worked for Prince and their discipline.

--love that Lisa told the "Strange Way of Saying I love you" story

--do admire the way he was influenced by their tastes (but ultimately he chose to be influenced because he knew what they brought to the table)

--do love that Wendy could call him My Little Pony and play with his chest hair

--do like that they didn't hire a full time singer to replace Prince on these tours

--do admire that W and L forgave him for his homophobic early comments

--also admire that Wendy stated that Prince wanted her child to call him uncle Princey (that was a cool move because I think it might have won some forgiveneness from his gay fans)

--Wendy's lovely statements around 2004 about their reconcilliation at the time

--think Power Fantastic is brilliant and wish P had given them more credit

--admire their warmth with fans

--admire comradry with one another

--admire that they might not be getting paid much for these tours

--admire that they didn't get too upset about the AMA not mentioning them when Purple Rain won best soundtrack last year.

--Wendy complimenting P on his guitar playing

--Fink and or bobby complimenting P on his perfect singing

--Mark complimenting P on his bass playing...

--Lisa complimenting him on the lyrics in Raspberry Beret.

--Dr. Fink constantly mentioned Prince's sense of humor



Neutral about...

--their issues with credits at times are justifiable. I just wish it had stayed more matter of fact and not ended with Wendy stating some bitter things in that Purple Rain doc years ago and leading folks to believe she and L wrote Purple Rain).

--their statement that P needed to not always appear strong (and that he would still be alive if he were willing to admit his weakness and need for help.) I agree.

--their acknowledgment that they had their ups and downs with him

Annoyed about--

--focusing only on P and the Revolution songs after his death as if there was no great songs without their contributions. (I struggle with whether they believe what that exclusion of other songs implies or not>>)

--not appearing in any other tributes for big audiences (even up to his point)

--Wendy wanting Thanks You's...sorry but I think he did thank her indirectly (Rolling Stone cover, Kiss video, In This Bed I scream song etc) and she has appeared on shows and in books stating her contributions to his work for years. Why does she need a thank you at this point. Some credit and cash maybe.

--Lisa saying P was sanctified and canonized...I don't agree...we know he was a dick sometimes. No one ever said he was a saint. We get it. Don't belabor a point that was well established before he died. And his music is still 80's nostalgia with large chunks ignored by critics and massive public. He doesn't have Dylan or the Beatles canonization. I find him a bit underrated with the general public. He never wins Prince vs MJ polls. thats for sure. The hype right after he died was huge but its died down considerably since then.

--Mark claiming to not remember anything from a rather recent and important performance whilst remembering details from the concerts years ago (Rolling Stone opening etc).

--Mark's statement that death is the price you pay for your sins. He probably meant it a different way but it was still a ill-adviced comment.

--No public words of condolences when Prince's son died even though P threw some love toward Wendy and LIsa's brothers when they died. (the love we make and a song dedicated to Lisa's brother during Musicology tour.) If I am wrong about this, then I apologize.

--Wendy's statement that P was "mean" to every woman he ever lived with because he was terrified of real intimacy. Probably not a completely untrue statement but it is way too presumptious to make that generalization about every relationship and every woman.

--Wendy stating that the Revolution with P was his only real band and the equivalent of the Beatles. I know they contributed a lot on Around the World in a Day/PR/Parade but the Beatles had two leaders. Prince and the Revolution had one. Maybe during Dream Factory..it was more of a democracy but that album didn't see the light of day.
