I do not think Carmen was truly overrated because she did have talent and charisma and she has made a fine career for herself on her own brand not sniffling and poo-pooing over Prince to do it either.

.

She has so much going on and I think she does not get enough kudos for moving on and doing her own thing.

I have yet to see a Vanity interview where Prince wasn't the major, and often the first, topic of discussion. But no one ever accused her of riding Prince's coattails in her solo career. I wonder why some have such different standards for various proteges.

Carmen is the protege I was speaking of and I like how she has handled herself and yes Carmen gets asked about Prince at times and she answers the questions as asked but it is not M.O.- in fact many people do not even know Carmen dated and lived with Prince.

.

I am sorry and no hard feelings but I was not speaking of Vanity and today is her birthday and I do not want to debate her.

Your point of the interviewer asking her about Prince is valid.

This is the part of your comments to which I was responding. "I do not think Carmen was truly overrated because she did have talent and charisma and she has made a fine career for herself on her own brand not sniffling and poo-pooing over Prince to do it either." You seem to be suggesting in your pointed comment that some proteges (or one in particular) have (has) made their careers "sniffling and poo-pooing over Prince."

BTW: Happy Birthday, Vanity!!

Her songwriting is definitely her strength but I think her voice can be quite nice. Some of her Music Monday performances were good I thought and she knows how to make a cover her own.I especially liked her versions of Killing Me Softly,Better Man and American Boy.

I agree. I didn't mean to suggest that her singing is not good. To the contrary, I think her voice is lovely, with quite a range. I love it when she does the little Aaron Neville-esque warbles. Many people underestimate Andy.

She does have a nice range when she lets go such as on her cover of A Better Man.I was impressed with her vocals on that.

Carmen is a dancer and she has talent-

She is stunning and made her way once she left Prince.

She has done just fine - she has Baywatch $$$.

She was not a rapper but she no need.

.

Vanity stands alone- she made films , music, tv shows, and an artist poet. People hate on her because there is a need to try to belittle her as some drugged out whore air head but she was not that.

She had talent - and left the Prince circle and did her own thing.Prior to meeting Prince she had a resume that included song writing and starring in movies so for those who feel she is like Carmen and Apples you are mistaken.

For the record, what songs did Vanity write and in what movies did she star before becoming a household name as a Prince Girl? I know that she had done a commercial or two.

2 movies: Tanya's Island and Terror Train in 1980 and you can read the article below about the rest-she had a life and a career prior to meeting Prince.

As I said I am not debating about Denise or anyone else. It is what it is- she lived her life. I admire her I do not think she was perfect nor do I expect others to think of her memory as I do- it's all good. I was simply sharing my opinion and am not understanding the interrogation. She also wrote a book about herself also- there is a lot of information about her and her sermons all tells information about her . I however am not an walking encyclopedia on all things Denise. I stan but do not STAN. I do not take it personally and am not paid to hype her or post about her so . . . enjoy the info I shared and have at it. She is my fave out of all the protoges and for me there is as no competition they all are fine I just have one I favor out of the rest.

Okay, now that you mention it, I've seen that article which, if I'm not mistaken, TOB also posted here on the Org. I couldn't recall the names of the films. I saw no mention of songwriting, but I won't ask you about that again, lest I be accused of interrogating you.

Speaking of which, I ask you questions because of your harsh pronouncements about other proteges, particularly Andy Allo, whom you claimed (in another thread) is "pimping" Prince's memory. And, your comment on this thread about Carmen making a career on her own "brand" and not "sniffling and poo-pooing over Prince" just happens to come the day after the documentary aired featuring Andy's tearful reflections about Prince. Mind you, I can count 3-4 people who were crying (or on the verge of crying) during the highly emotional film, two of them grown men.

Vanity was a legit talent and owned her life the good and bad and made no excuses. When she Blamed she Blamed Vanity. I am not engaging in the my gal is better than yours convo. Vanity was way more than just a pretty face. There is a reason she is still talked about an admired and her legend will only expand as time passes no matter how many efforts are made to erase, minimize or villify her.

No, what you're engaging in is throwing bricks and then denying it. At least, when you recently used the p-word to denigrate another protege, you said it directly. Just know that Vanity is beloved. She doesn't need rude, delusional "STANS" exaggerating her accomplishments or skill set and or/ saying mean things about other Prince associates to make her shine.

I have opinions and thoughts and those are not throwing bricks; it is speaking a feeling or a thought I have at that time. I should not have derogatory names thrown my way for my opinions as I have not done that to you nor will I do that to you for sharing opinions. So I will take being called rude, delusional, and one who exaggerates -and whatever other derogatory label you need to hand me. On my end discussion is discussion, no harm, no worries.

I think when discussing this, it should be limited to the time they were with Prince.

They are not proteges outside of Prince's camp or direction.

So what they did after or before shouldn't count in this decision making.

Bria didn't seem to really want to be a protege. She was on Usher's album 8701 and was a video model but didn't seem to want to be a performer. She made a nice video for Everytime then Prince seemed to lose interest in Elixer afterwards with the exception of performing All This Love and Elixer himself.I think the last time she was seen with him was when he sang to her onstage at the show in San Jose in May of 2011.AA only got one video as well and then Prince seemed to lose interest in Superconductor. In December 2012 Andy posted on FB that the next video would be for Yellow Gold and hinted at another album then nothing else was said about it.I think he had moved on to 3EG by then.

Carmen Electra was sorta like the hip-hop/90s version of Vanity...strikingly beautiful but not very musically talented. The only good thing about her album is the actual *music* played by Prince and the NPG band members smile

Elisa stated that when she first got rehired, it was to be singing backing vocals for Bria while she sang Elixir on Jay Leno but P had to do SHOE instead due to Bria's stage fright. Maybe, there was nothing P could do for Bria's career. As for Andy, who knows why P "lost interest"in later albums. Maybe, she wanted to do it independently.

Jill Jones said going out with Prince involved making an album and once that was made and released he lost interest in you and said she saw it happen a lot of times. While i'm not saying this is definitely what happened here I'd be willing to assume that habit was at least part of the reason.

I hadn't heard that about Elisa, thanks.Bria was in the background sitting at the bar watching him during his performance of SHOE so she did at least do that. From the way Andy was talking, it sounded like she and Prince were planning another project as well as a video for Yellow Gold but something happened. They may have had creative differences and from what she said in her interview with the Sac Bee last year, it sounded like Prince was wanting Andy to go back to her original sound and she wanted to still do Funk.He also originally had Adrian put together the horn section for her and took them for his own and she seemed upset by that which may have caused some problems too. When she was asked in an interview about why she left Prince she just said that the timing was right.

I really enjoy Superconductor and recognize Andy's talent from material she's done outside of her work with Prince, BUT, I still have a hard time believing that she is responsible for as much of the writing on the album as she is given credit for.

I will concede that it is possible that I feel this way because of the musicians involved with the recording making it sound like a Prince record, but, I'm just not buying it.

That said, many people who's knowledge and opinions I greatly respect have told me I'm wrong about this and that she really did write 2/3 of the album, so, I'm willing to concede that I might be very wrong here. wink
