I think they definitely helped shape his creative sound at the time. If he hadn't met Wendy or Lisa he would have been successful yes but I doubt he could've made something like "All My Dreams". . When she talks about other bands she talks about how they are far better musicians giving them all the credit they deserve She was only saying that it was the last band he was a member of. Which I whole heartedly agree with.

I am sure she would like to think that but that is where she over-steps IMO.

For all we know if he hadn't met them, he may have met others who might have inspired him to create something different and perhaps even greater than All My Dreams. There is just no way to determine one way or the other what might have been.

I don't agree that The Revolution was the last band he was a member of. And the way Wendy talks about other musicians Prince worked with doesn't come across as a compliment to me. It comes across as technically they might be better but...

Again she might not intended it to come across that way but it does to me.

First off, Wendy didn't say that she and Lisa, or The Rev made Prince. She's just making nuanced commentary about her and the band's contribution to the music, and the relationships they had. It was special what they had, and that's just a truism.

It's interesting that nobody lost their shit when Tommy Barbarella claimed that 90's NPG was Prince's best band. Prince never wrote no mournful songs about losing Tommy's 'sound' ya'know?

People need to either discuss at a deeper level what their resistance is to giving Wendy/Lisa/The Revolution their simple due, or they need to just let them have it.

I think Prince was being himself from jump. He was Prince who many loved and followed before Wendy was an idea. She and her sister have woven tales to make themselves more important and I will add Susan Rodgers to it as Susan Rodgers stans for the Melvoins.

Prince would have been Prince no matter if Wendy or Susannah ever stepped foot in his world.

I am sick of both of them.

In a candid moment Wendy (or was it Lisa? (I suppose it was Wendy, because Lisa hardly gets to talk when Wendy is around)) admitted that Prince told them how to sing the background vocals on All My Dreams ("Sing like Betty Davies!"), so Prince was very much the creative force. On that song too.

You really should just recuse yourself from conversations about Wendy and Lisa, cause you are obviously prejudiced against them, and that's just not OK.

that is because you have a prejudiced opinion of them.
You are feeling and not looking at the actuality of what Prince and a band prior to fame and after fame was like. This is not just a Prince thing.

Wow I had no idea there was all this poo flinging at W&L. I admired them so much back in the day. This was the era when it was so rare to see women creating music, never mind playing an instrument! I think Prince definitely encouraged their input and involvement even more so because of that. I love The Rev era. They're by no means his tightest band but u get a feel that they were in it together, riding that global stardom wave. It's easy to forget just how young they all were too. I do believe they were true friends, much more than later bands who at times seemed more like musicians for hire. She's obviously going to be mentioning P all the time in interviews because a) she's being asked and b) she has shows to promote. Nothing wrong with that.

Wendy M is getting on my nerves. Every interview I read she goes out of her way to claim credit for Prince's creativity. She has a specific agenda in which she feels the need to grab a part of his legacy. The latest garbage in the Chicago Tribune: "What Lisa and I were able to do, we gave him permission not to feel insecure about what he wanted in his life. He had "A Star is Born" on his wall? OK, let's be it. He could be exactly what he wanted to be with a group of people who wanted him to be himself. That's when he started to own everything he was." Cmon! Cash out without all the delusions of grandeur. Your thoughts?

fallinluv

Yeah um It was a lot of fun, a lot of people like to say did you collaborated with Prince in the studio
I don't say we collaborated as much as the Revolution tried to live out his dream, we got into the mind of Prince we learned what it was he was trying to accomplish. So I think that was more the collaboration, us learning 'what is it you're looking for?'
and once we could see his direction, we would jam so much, we would sometimes jam from 10 o'clock in the morning to 10 o'clock at night. I remember sometimes eating lunch while I'm still playing. I would walk to the lunchroom with my bass because it was on a wireless rig and then I would go into the refrigerator grab food and come back and I'd still be playing with one hand while eating. That's how intense we were, and I think from that we helped Prince create not only a style and energy but it was almost like a freight train, it was so heavy that even when other musicians would come and stand up with us they didn't even know where to begin, it was very difficult for them to hang with us because the style that we developed was so powerful and was so rhythmic that uh they didn't know how to jam with us. It was a very interesting time period, but I think I think a lot of music came from that type of grooving and jamming together

I agree with Wendy 100%. Never has she said that she and Lisa are the reason he was so creative. But as she said waaaay back in 87..."I gave colors to you you'd never seen..." That's all she's saying...they may not have played on a lot of stuff, but they were a major influence and to deny it is ridiculous. PERIOD

Make it so, Number One...

I'm from Minneapolis. It's absolutely possible that Prince hadn't really listened to the Beatles. In Minnesota The Beatles were th kind of band that middle class white people were into. I didn't listen to the Beatles myself until I was much older. And Wendy was there. So, she should be trusted when she says something.
