RIP Brian Gallagher (Hornheadz, also known for his instrumental version of "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World")

https://www.facebook.com/...amp;type=3

It is with a very heavy heart that I say goodbye to this great talent, Brian Gallagher. Always kind and in good spirits, he was a monster player. He played occasionally with Hookers $ Blow and recorded with The Honeydogs on "Amygdala." He was a handsome dude and a musical legend, playing with Greazy Meal & Julius Collins...also playing for a bit with Prince. He looked like an eternal 25 year old but played like an old soul. I'm told he died of a pulmonary embolism.Rest, bud.

See http://www.princevault.co..._Gallagher for his involvement with Prince.

This is really tragic. He was only 52. Brian's association with Michael Bland was instrumental in the forming of the NPG Horns for the D&P tour in 1992. He was a natural talent and lived and breathed music. I still remember walking with him, wide-eyed, into the Tokyo Dome to play our first Prince concert all those years ago. I think one of the first tracks we recorded with Prince was Sexy MF. He did his solo in 1 take, and Prince made him learn it to play note for note on tour. He said, "That's the problem with playing something that's genius, people make you play it over and over again". I was fortunate enough to play with him again recently in an instrumental band along with NPG alumnus Tommy Barbarella. He always played from the heart and was a treat to share the stage with. His gentle soul will be greatly missed in our Mpls community, and his 3 children are much to young to have lost their father.

pulmonary embolism = real

The clot forms in your legs and raises to your lungs and heart.

Do not sit for too long in cars, limos, planes, offices, homes, or in front of a computer...

It's growing, and killing..It almost ended Serena Williams, and Chirs Bosh.

Tamar Braxton... Arnold Palmour..

Blood is to thick with too much inactivity for long stretches..

My heart goes out to Brian's friends and families. I lost my mother (aged 29) and my grandmother (aged 25) to pulmonary embolisms. I, too, was diagnosed at the age of 17. This month marks 33 years since I got my first clot and this month (March) is also Blood Clot Awareness month. I've been one of the lucky ones to have survived with this condition for as long as I have. I've heard repeatedly from doctors that I can die at any time and had one doctor tell me that if a large enough clot goes to my heart or lungs, I have 10 minutes and there is nothing any one can do. When I was young, I worried about dying, having been touched by the loss of my mother (I was only 7). Eventually, I thought about those 10 minutes. If this is my last 10 minutes, what do I want those 10 minutes to consist of? Do I want to spend them worried about dying, worried about getting a new clot that could kill me? No. I wanted to LIVE those 10 minutes filled with love, joy, peace. And so, I live my life as though these 10 minutes were my last and put as much living and loving in those 10 minutes that I can. Unfortunately, I was diagosed with a new DVT (deep vein thrombosis) this week and I can tell you it is a painful condition, but I'm still here by God's grace, and I am thankful. But my heart is saddened for those families and friends that have been touched with this condition and must find the strength to go on without their loved one. Brian left behind 3 teen-aged children. The loss they feel is deep.

.

100,000 to 300,000 deaths occur each year from blood clots, that's greater than the number of people who lose their lives to AIDS, breast cancer, and motor vehicle deaths combined. The sad thing is that AIDS, breast cancer, and motor vehicle deaths are researched more in-depth and receive more monies towards research grants than blood clots do. Also, 600,000 non-fatal clots occur each year in the deep veins of the legs and in the lungs. But the reason blood clots were not receiving research grants like breast cancer was that there was no advocacy for blood clots, no group that was advocating the need for that research and educating the public about the risks and symptoms. The National Blood Clot Alliance is working to change that, to educate the public about the risk factors and the need for more research. Also, 600,000 non-fatal clots occur each year in the deep veins and in the lungs. On average, one person dies every 6 minutes from a fatal clot.

.

If you'd like to help, please consider making a small donation in Brian's name to the National Blood Clot Alliance (www.stoptheclot.org). I made a donation in my mom's name, but will making one in Brian's name, too, afterall, he was a part of our NPG family.

It's not just lack of movement that puts people at risk for developing clots. Below, are some of the risk factors for developing blood clots:

.

Know your risk for blood clots. The first and most important thing you can do to protect yourself from a life-threatening blood clot is to learn if you are at risk.
Below is a list of some of the most common risk factors for blood clots. Know your risk:
  • Hospitalization for illness or surgery
  • Major surgery, particularly of the pelvis, abdomen, hip, knee
  • Severe trauma, such as a car accident
  • Injury to a vein that may have been caused by a broken bone or severe muscle injury
  • Hip or knee replacement surgery
  • Cancer and cancer treatments
  • Use of birth control methods that contain estrogen, such as the pill, patch or ring
  • Pregnancy, which includes the six weeks after the baby is born
  • The use of hormone replacement therapy, which contains estrogen
  • A family history of blood clots
  • Obesity
  • Confinement to bed
  • Sitting too long, especially with legs crossed

Talk to your doctor or healthcare provider if any of these risk factors apply to you or someone you love. For me, it is hereditary.

I only knew Brian Gallagher from TMBGITW--never even knew he was a member of the Hornheadz. Sad to have another member of the purple musical family leaving us too early. My sincerest condelences to his family and friends.
