I hate when some fans say "Prince IS the Time".If that is true, then why did he hire those guys in the first place? Instead of having those guys in Purple Rain,Prince could have simply played all of their roles, right? smile He could have played Morris' role, right? Hell,he could have just been the ONLY person in the film! LOL

Prince is a genuis, but nobody can do everything by themselves.Prince wrote and produced their music, but they still sang and played it in concert. They brought it all to life.

Ya true....BUT the money part is 'wrote & produced'....

'they still sang and played it in concert' = performer: not owner.

Broadway actors/musicians perform material written and prodcued by others - they can't go perform the show without being under the umbrella of whoever owns the production. You don't hear the originators of a role onstage thinking they should have ownership.... 'just because'

Technically Prince could swap in a whole new band - Jody Watley is doing that with Shalimar...there have been different touring members of even iconic bands - I dont know why people expect Prince to do things no one else in the industry does....even the Jacksons couldn't use the Jackson 5 name and tour with it ....but they just went and worked a way around it...and that IS possible for all of Princes former associates...they just DONT.

Prince was the architect of The Time. He drafted the blueprints, designed the layout, procured the raw materials and copyrighted the intellectual property of his project. Jesse Johnson, Morris Day, Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, Monte Moir and Jerome at different intervals were sub-contractors to perform specific functions to complete the job. At the end of the day, The Time was Prince's enterprise. It's business.

Some people left the Prince camp with a tremendous amount of exposure and still came up short. I get their frustrations but when these guys blame the boss they had 30 years ago for why they aren't successful today, well, it's just a little embarrassing.

I'm not sure what part of Bean answering questions that were asked of him people are not getting?

Again, it's not like he's posting rants on the internet all willy nilly...he is answering the questions that are being asked from his perspective which he has every right to do regardless of whether we agree or not.

He was there....people on this thread were not. It's entirely possible that he has a more informed opinion on the matter.

Finally, I don't see Bean as unsuccessful. He is explaining past events that he was asked about.

Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

I guess logic and rationale is "yack yack" to you. Not sure if you aware of something called Google but if you go to that site and look up the phrase "Flyte Tyme", the Minneapolis Band featuring Terry Lewis, Monte Moir and Jellybearn Johnson took their band name from a song by Donald Byrd. But don't let me keep you from believing fallacies.

It's because someone gave him a great opportunity when they were young and now all he does is bitch and moan in every interview. I never see Jimmy and Terry or W&l bitch and they truly have reason to. Oh wait maybe they were talented on their own. Or maybe because they aren't little bitches.

Imagine Val Kilmer or George Clooney going into every interview bitching that Warner Brothers doesn't allow them to make their own Batman movies or comic books. Smh

The guy can't take a good thing without being ungrateful for the opportunity. An opportunity once upon a time when they were in their 20's. Move on and grow up already. Show a little class.

Exactly. At some point, people gotta look to the future and move on because 1981 isn't coming back. Prince has made a lot of mistakes in his career and most definitely with some of the acts he has produced. Prince clearly is moving forward by working with different musicians and making music that is relevant to him in 2015, Wendy and Lisa and Jimmy and Terry are doing the same thing. Jellybean sound like that guy waiting to get his "payback" at a high school reunion for all the people who slighted him. That is quite sad or to use the immature phrase a certain moderator says when they can't refute an argument, associates bitching is "yack yack".

I agree. Jellybean may be extra annoyed about the subject because he was the only one in both bands that were denied their original names. The bigger difference between him and other former associates like Jam & Lewis and Wendy & Lisa is those other guys have a lot more going on in their careers outside of their Prince connections that is known to the general public. You can conduct lenghty interviews with them and not mention Prince once. But less people know what Jellybean is doing other than the Time and Family reunions so asking him about Prince always happens.

As far as I can tell, no one owns "The Family".

Do you know that "Mr. Brown" from the Madea movies was a member of The Family? You can see him and Tamela Mann in the back

Not true

hes had interviews that had nothing to do with the name usage before and after and as he said he is a grown man he should be able to talk about the times without fear

Q: It has got to be frustrating that Prince won’t let you guys play as The Time or The Family?

A: It’s infuriating. It is a very sore spot to this day for me. I have talked about it publicly and had him mad at me. I don’t give a [expletive]. I’m grown. I’m over 60, so what can he do to me? I don’t work for him. All we ever did was love you and help you, and this is what you do? He acts like we stole something from him. Prince believes he is The Time, he is The Family. He believes that. I'm so sorry but, Prince is right. He owns it. End of story.

Just because someone is wealthy doesnt mean they have to give what they created away...I don't understand the logic there, they were employed by Prince, its like Apple, you get paid for your creative input into Apple products because Apple is paying your azz. They didn't 'help' Prince, they worked for Prince. Just because you are friends doesn't change that dynamic.

[Edited 10/18/15 17:31pm]

I dont understand the logic of a guy who is nearly 60 now, blocking something as insignificant as a name to a band he has no interest in doing anything with himself. Just let Jellybean and the rest use the bands' name (be it "The Family" or "The Time"), and make a lil' money without the legal hassle of changing the frickin' name. It's only a name man, why block it. Does Prince still think those trademarked names are really worth anything of any major value? (particually "The Family").

It doesn't affect Prince at all really, yet he continues to be a dick about something so pointless.

Prince treats his ex-associates as well as his fans it seeems.
