protégées popularity

Which female protegee was enjoying greater popularity back in the day?

Was it Sheila? Vanity? Apollonia? Which lady did more interviews, photo sessions? Modelling for magazines? Magazine covers? Advertising? Who was usually in gossip papers? Or being chased by fans, photographers?

Sheila E. and Vanity were extremely popular during that time period (mid to late 80s).

After Purple Rain,Apollonia appeared on 'Falcon Crest' but her popularity went downhill until the release of her solo album in 1988.

I never fully counted Apollonia as a true protege, she was acting a part 4 purple rain and being Apollonia 6 was a part of it.

.

Vanity 6 and Sheila E obviously

.

Vanity(Denise) moreso than Sheila E was her character, Sheila E was a bit more of a Prince imitation in character.

.

But success those 2 had it, Jill Jones if she had an album or 2 would have been big too

vanity and sheila are the only ones that really did other projects not Prince related. I actually still like some of vanity's movies like action jackson and 52 pick up.

Actually,Prince had major plans for Apollonia after Purple Rain.He really wanted her to stick around.According to her, when she announced in 1985 that she was leaving the Prince camp,Prince got an attitude."He told me that I'll never make it without him",Apollonia said.

Yeah Prince did, but not Apollonia(the woman) it was always going to be a 1 time deal for her

He should have adapted and pulled in Jill Jones or Taj Sevelle

I don't think Prince had any further plans for Apollonia 6. He had shuffled the contents of their album so that many of the potential hits (Manic Monday, Glam. Life, Take Me With U) ended up on other projects. He also declined to put them on the Purple Rain tour, so he wasn't actively promoting them when the album came out in the fall.

There was talk about The Time (or Morris Day solo) and Apollonia 6 being involved with the Purple Rain tour, but when Morris dropped out as the tour was being put together in May/June 1984, any thought of having another 'triple threat' tour was put on the shelf.

Apollonia wasn't happy with the situation, but as it has been said, she was an actress hired to play a role, and did it very well. I don't think she had any big musical goals at the time.

Back then,I had heard that the Time would be doing their own 'Ice Cream Castles' headlining tour, with Apollonia 6 as the opening act.Of course, this never happened, unfortunately. But initially,Prince and Warners had big plans for the A6 album. As you know, the girls filmed a lengthy video album/mini-movie featuring videos for "Sex Shooter","Happy Birthday Mr.Christian","Blue Limousine" and "Ooh She She Wa Wa".I think this project was abandoned when the album failed to take off.I think that's when Prince decided to end the group.

Thanx. I hadn't heard that before, but that would have been interesting. From the research/interviews I've done for a book I'm writing, I hadn't heard about The Time doing any tour without Prince, largely because he still 'owned' them and Morris was heading in the other direction. I really wish there would have been a true Purple Rain tour. Even Prince has gone on record stating his disappointment about that... but we can dream! lol

Thanx. The latest update on it is this. It will focus on 1983/84 exclusively in volume 1. I hope to have it out sometime this year, but that depends on a lot of variables. I'm 80% done with the first draft and it has been a blast. I've interviewed over 50 engineers, band members (several of The Revolution and The Time), singers, etc. and have access to hundreds of official documents about his time in the recording studio.

My goal is to make this book similar to THE BEATLES RECORDING SESSIONS, because that is considered the bible for Beatles fans.

Thanx for asking.

How many volumes are you planning, Madhouseman? If we assume that everything works out the way you want?

Not sure. the main periods I'd focus on if I do more would involve 1981-88ish, so we'll see. Right now I'm strictly focusing on 83/84, but it contains a lot of stuff never before covered and great details about the 150 or so studio sessions from that era, as well as more inside looks at the 1999/Purple Rain tours.

Thanx again for the interest.

Man, I absolutely love the footage that came out from that video album thing ... I think back before Prince cracked down on youtube, that's where I saw it. The Apollonia 6 album (as well as the Vanity 6 one) are my 2 all-time favorite protegee albums, hands down. I recently burned them to one CD and called it "AppleVanity6," and it's my shower/getting ready music. Great stuff.

yeah,it's interesting to see that footage after all these years! I remember hearing about that project back in late '84.In an interview from back then,Apollonia said that "Warners have requested---no,demanded---that we film a video for every song on the album".I thought it was just an idea that never happened.I was surprised when the footage leaked several years ago! Makes me wonder....what other aborted projects are there? Any other mini-movies that are collecting dust somewhere?
