Denise Matthews talks a bit about "3X2=6" and financial reasons for leaving Prince/not doing Purple Rain

In her most recent appearance as a guest on 1 of those blogtalkradio shows, Denise Matthews answered some call-in questions after her preaching segment. 1 of the callers asked her some questions about the song "3X2=6" and why she didn't do Purple Rain. At first I thought it was a prank caller, as the caller said he thought "3X2=6" sounded like a gospel song to him falloff

.

Denise said the song didn't have deep meaning, didn't make much sense to her, that Prince wrote the song but liked to say that Vanity 6 wrote it, and then she even sang a couple verses lol. Of course she went on to say, after singing "a girl's best friend's her pride" that "pride is not a girl's best friend" and that it's "1 of the 7 deadly sins" lol

.

As for why she left and didn't do Purple Rain, Denise said 1 of the reasons was money. She was only being paid $250 a week and that Prince wasn't paying her for the tour they went on, or the fact that "Nasty Girl" was such a hit. "Prince was taking all that money and I thought 'you know what? This is adding up to nothing. I'm living out of a hotel-I gotta go' ". When asked if she had regrets about not doing Purple Rain, Matthews said she didn't and how Prince wanted to pay her just $5000 for the whole movie eek disbelief while she was paid $300,000 for doing the The Last Dragon. "I'm outta here-that's the best you can do? bye" lol "It was just to hold me so I couldn't go anywhere. You know what I'm saying, so I couldn't do anything with my life ".

.

She said once again that she's in talks to do a documentary about her life, and didn't want to answer the last question of this particular caller, which was how she told Prince she was leaving and not doing Purple Rain.

.

In the link below you can hear the exchange: skip to 92:00 and it continues to about 98:00.

$300000 would have been a lot back then, hope the documentary come to life, especially if she is willing to discuss that era if her life.

Doubt it. What the hell happened to her book? She still seems a bit off even after all these years. She was the epitome of a Prince chick though. Vanity set the bar.

It looks like Jellybean Johnson was wrong when he said Prince always treats the women better than the men in his organization. At least him and members of the Time got an extra $100 playing for Vanity 6. She says in this recent interview how Prince wasn't paying her for the tour they went on. I doubt he was paying Susan or Brenda either if Vanity was his girlfriend and he still was only going to pay her $5,000 to do the whole movie. I would have left too. I think her getting $300,000 for doing The Last Dragon was fair. I love her in The Last Dragon. I'd love to read a Dye Got The Answers To Your Questions interview of her, though I'd really love to see a documentary on her life.

Uh, she is such a hater!

Why is she still talking about this?

Why doesn't she just move on with her life?

If she is so ungrateful foir what Prince did for her, why did she record his songs?

If she's supposed to be so religious now, why hasn't she forgiven him?

She must still think about him, since its been almost 30 years and she's still talking about him!

Seems like Prince was just kind to all of the wrong people. He gave them careers and this is how they thank him?

Did I cover all of the idolworshippers' general comments?

Here's the answe key:

1. Not really. She never said she was mad about any of it.

2. Because she was asked.

3. Seems like she has since she is into the church rather than doing Vanity 6 reunion tours.

4. She never said she hasn't forgiven Prince for anything. In church, they call it testifying, or telling the truth about your life.

5. Again, she was asked - just like most of his former associates are, right before they are criticized for talking about him, which is stupid.

6. Seems like he couldn't have branched out without them, either. YOu can't claim production credits without someone to produce. He'd look pretty silly singing a song called Nasty Girl.

Seems like all was not as peachy in the purple kingdom as it appeared to be.

Vanity is my all time favorite Prince woman that he christened. She was the most beautiful sexiest woman that Eye had ever seen at the time. She just oozed charisma....A documentary is well over due of her. Eye would love 2 c a "Unsung" Of her..Her energy is magnetic & hypnotizing still...Like someone else said she set the bar on what a Prince woman exuded.. Well, it doesn't sound like she's done any non-diclosure agreements, and it very much sounds like she's insane enough to spill the beans on Prince.

Where have you been? Vanity was the first person from the Purple Kingdom to express are dissatisfaction 30 years ago however, she always leaves out the fact that she did not write anything, play one instrument and had a rep for not working very hard (drugs) . Even Alan Leeds described her as being very street and unhappy. We all know P is not saint or a bag of candy to be around. She is not saying anything new or interesting.

I think she specifically acknowledges no having written at least for this song. And I think a bulk of her ministry is devoted to discussing her drug use.

Just sayin.

It is rare indeed. At this point in her life. Matthews would never agree to a tell-all interview about her Vanity days and Prince etc. She will, however, reveal some information from time to time as she goes through her testimony or, in this case, when ambushed lol This particular caller buttered her up and then surprised her so she was caught off guard and gave up some answers. The other callers were calling in about problems they were having with their lives and Denise would offer prayer/counseling and then this guy came in outta nowhere lol

I'm not a religious person but I always try to catch her interviews these days for the moments like this. For the people in this thread saying "we've heard it all before blah blah", no, we didn't know until now just how little Prince was paying her. Prince was a total dick for trying to keep everyone around him beneath him. He didn't seem to care that other people had dreams and ambitions too. I love how he could never control Vanity and clearly met his match with her. He's VERY lucky that Denise had a change of heart 20 years ago. When she first became born-again, she had a deal for a lot of money to write a tell-all about her Vanity days, and had the draft ready to go. Just before it was going to be finalized/published, she said she realized it would be wrong to profit off such a gossipy book. That's why the book she has out now skips most of that stuff.

Yes, we did know that she was not happy with her financial situation. She did not give a dollar figure but she made mention that she was not happy with her pay while in Vanity Six. In addtion, she has talked about P running around on her. As far as P being a dick for not paying her enougth we would have to know what his expenses were back then and you have to take Vanity's contribution into consideration. After all he did just replace her with Appollinia and keep it moving.

She is more than beautiful! She should have entered the pageant for Miss America instead of Vannesa Williams..

Vanity was living in Canada at the time that she competed in pagaents.

To be fair, she would not have beaten Vanessa Williams in the talent competition for Miss America. Vanessa has a much better singing voice than Vanity. Vanity has admitted in a televised interview that she didn't sing very well, so I don't feel bad writing about it. She has said so herself. Unlike the Miss America pagaent, Miss USA has no talent competition. IF Vanity was American, I could see her taking Miss USA, but Miss America, no.

Vanessa Williams is a triple threat....she can act, sing, & dance. She has appeared on Broadway, (no easy task). As much as I love Vanity's role in Purple history, I cannot take anything away from Vanessa Williams.

Well your right if you want to compare her talent wise. I'm very much aware of Vanessa being a triple threat. No offense to you sweetie. But I am in the entertainment industry & know all what Vanessa does and accomplished. I was just comparing Vanity's natural beauty nothing else.

We knew about her unhappiness with the financial situation and Prince being a whore, but we didn't know the exact dollar amounts. That detail is new. The tiny amount she was being paid by Prince is absurd. $250 a week which was not increased for going on tour, and then the $5000 offer for Purple Rain? Clearly the rest of hollywood viewed her as worth more than that as she made $300,000 for The Last Dragon. Prince wanted to keep Vanity (and the rest of his associates/proteges) beneath him by not paying them. Unfortunate associates like Jill Jones didn't have other options so they stuck around and put up with his BS but luckily for Vanity she did and I'm sure Prince was surprised/pissed about it.
