NPG's New Guitarist??

Andy Mckee has announced that he is now working with Prince

From his Facebook page

ATTN ALL FANS! MASSIVE NEWS ALERT!

The next sentence is one I never could have dreamed I would one day utter.

I will be performing on stage with Prince in Australia!

The dates are coming right up in May in Sydney, Brisbane, and Melbourne. It looks like we will be doing some of his classic tunes as an acoustic set, maybe one or two of my original pieces, maybe some surprises! I am so truly honored and humbled to have been invited by him and to have the opportunity to perform in front of his audience.

For those of you who might not be aware, he is really an amazing musician; he plays a variety of instruments extremely well and he has written some of the most memorable tunes of our time. He is surrounded by a bit of mystery so I also wanted to tell you that he treated me with incredible respect and kindness through this entire process.

This means a lot to me both personally and professionally. How could I have ever seen this coming? Not in a million years. But, I am eternally grateful for how things are going in my life and I could not be where I am today without all of you.

Thank you so much and I hope to finally see a bunch of you Aussies real soon!

Andy

Peach and Black podcast crew mentioned this acoustic guitarist would be guesting with Prince - I got from their comments that he would be either supporting or maybe P is gonna replace the 'piano samples' section of each concert with working alongside Andy McKee

Sounds like a welcome addition having googled some of this guy's pieces. Excellent news cool

Thanks for posting this for us all, but may wanna tweak the thread title to something like NPG Guest Guitarist as may be misleading.

I actually googled it already...and Andy mckee was the first result with a video explaing the fan frets and how they compensate for high end frets being out of tune.

Prince's classic tunes as an acoustic set - HOW FANTASTIC! Looks like Australia's gonna get some really special shows. As already noted in other threads, Andy Mckee also has done beautiful versions of "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" and "Africa," I can only imagine how a Prince tune would sound with similar treatment. Thanks for Prince for bringing McKee to a wider audience!

That guy is awesome. His harp guitar work is incredible. I'm shocked to see Prince actually bring in someone of his talent.

Holy shit. It's been a dark couple of years for me (only in regards to Prince fandom) but this is actually incredibly exciting. He may be winning me back.

great news that there's new blood in there BUT if it's an accoustic set I only wnat to hear Prince and HIS guitar under a spotlight. Love the clips of this guy though and would hope that he influences P.

Change/experimentation is good. Prince is finally doing something a little different.

Also the fact that he's letting the guy play some of his music is incredible.

I am worried Prince will change his mind on that aspect of the deal. This seems too cool to actually happen.

I'm hearing ATWIAD with this one

Andy McKee

Andy McKee is one of the world’s finest acoustic soloists. After receiving over 20 million views collectively for his Youtube videos which were posted by the independent record label “Candyrat”, Andy’s success is a testament to the changing nature of the music industry as well as people’s desire for something new and interesting to listen to. At one point, Andy held the 1, 2 and 3 positions for Top-Rated Videos of All Time on the hugely popular website. His videos are still among the highest rated on Youtube. Consequently, Andy has performed to sold out shows in all over the world.

After starting with an interest in electric guitar, Andy turned to the acoustic guitar at the age of 16 and began enjoying and studying the music of Michael Hedges, Don Ross, Billy McLaughlin and Preston Reed. To this day he still sites these four musicians as his primary influences in acoustic music. At the same time, Andy draws inspiration from various other musicians and groups such as; Earth Wind and Fire, The Yellowjackets, Bjork, Imogen Heap, Pantera, Eric Johnson, Peter Gabriel, Dream Theater, Bruce Hornsby, and many others.

While there are countless amazing guitar players in the world, it is Andy’s attention to song structure and melodic content that elevates him above the typical guitarist. It can be observed that Andy likes to try different things with the guitar such as; altered tunings, partial capos, percussive hits, and tapping. But in the hands of Andy these are not mere parlor tricks, they are compositional tools used to create some of the finest crafted music for the steel string acoustic guitar.

Andy was born in Topeka, Kansas and still lives there today. He performs between 100-200 shows annually across the world.
