If sales are your criteria, then Lil Wayne is doing way better than The Original 7ven and Prince put together. lol

True. I was asking because most of his ex- associates are pretty talented folk but none of them really had any enduring success--and by success I mean sales, not personal satisfaction [Edited 10/29/11 15:15pm]

2 exceptions......The Original 7ven (Individual accomplishments) and Wendy & Lisa!!!!

So being a working musician is not enduring success...only album sales make it? You just keep narrowing your criteria to fit your needs

I'm not narrowing the criteria at all. I'm sure most of the ex- associates are leading productive, fulfilling personal and professional lives. But realistically speaking, most of them fairly or unfairly linked to whatever time they spent with Prince. I would think some of them kind of

^^^ They still perform in front of thousands. I know they've done shows as part of a lineup, where there are thousands there. Sheila was a headliner. Good music is still good music, whether it's in a small club, or in an arena.

Hmmm.... And why do you care about sales numbers exactly? Looks like a Prince fan is feeling ENVIOUS? biggrin How many do they need to sell in your opinion? How many tv appearances do they need to get your respect and support? What about the plastic they made the cd out of? Is the disc BENDY enough for you? Hi hater!

Seriously. You're acting like a "Stella" right now! If you beleive that selling 8000 CDs is doing them damn thing to death then the music industry is really thriving with stellar acts with promising futures. For that matter then Paisley Park must've been a financial success for Warner Brothers beacuse most of the proteges did at least that much is sales. Sales never mattered to me with any artist I support. If the O7 don't sell another CD it's all good cause I already have mine. Actually I bought it twice(iTunes and a hard copy w/DVD) So 2 of that 8000 is from this 'hater' right here! i respect all of the proteges(not just the ones that have issues with Prince). If you need some drama between people you don't even know to whet your musical appetite then I feel sorry for you and any artist you "claim" to support. Now begone! loser

You keep talking about sales. And ignorantly so, I might add. This ain't 1989. The music industry has changed big time. You are on every thread with something negative to say, but the cd sold enough to DEBUT in the TOP TEN on the r&b chart. Not exactly a failure. Especially given the name change and 20 year hiatus. But you never answered my question... Are you ENVIOUS of O7's success?

Wendy and Lisa's music probably reaches the greatest audience of ANY of these guys at this point given the top rated shows they are associated with that play worldwide. St. Paul has toured with Donny Osmond, Kenny Loggins and several others who play to thousands of fans. I believe Susannah has toured with Roger Waters (thousands of fans I would assume) - Sheila E....thousdands of fans through her own shows and with Ringo Starr. I don't think Jimmy and Terry had a lot of time to be touring. Morris and the Time played to some big audiences I would geuss. Lots of various NPG members have played with Cyndi Lauper, Justin Timberlake, and other high profile touring performers. Like I said- Prince is still a great performer- but it is his major label backed early career and whacky utterances to the media that keeps him on the pop radar, not what he is doing musically today.

So who exactly ARE you talking about? Appolonia? lol

You implied that I'm an envious Prince fan. If that was the case what would I have to be envious of? Prince's last CD released in the US debuted at number 2. The O7 debuted at number 58. That gives me nothing to be envious of. Also as an individual who is not a musician why or how could I be envious of any artists accomplishments. As a Prince Fan(which you say it like it's a negative thing) I have supported all of his proteges music and seen several of them in concert(Apollonia, Good Question, W&L, Morris Day & The Time, FDeluxe, Tamar etc.) when I could. I don't have to love every track they do or oversell them to everyone because that's not my job. If you like them cool. If you don't like them then that's cool too. Also stating facts that don't support your views is not negativity. If you can't handle the truth then step away from the discussion. When the O7 hit NYC I'll be thereI'll be out to show my suppport. Same as I did for FDeluxe last weekend and same as I did for Prince last winter.

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

That's funny. Every time Prince drops a CD he gets critiqued on his distribution and sales on this site. He gets consistently questioned about his 'relevance' in the mainstream of today. If we have to hold him to these standards then it should hold true for all of the associated artists. Sales aren't important to me but they do seem to be a sticking point for a lot of orgers!

So,I guess Lil Wayne is better and more relevent than Prince? hmmm lol Is that what some people here believe? lol.We can't have it both ways.Either sales matter or they don't.And if sales do matter, then Prince and the Original 7ven would be considered commercial has-beens.Do we really wanna go that route?

Prince is still a popular live act but his new music doesn't really appeal to the mainstream. In many ways,he's like the Rolling Stones,The Eagles and Fleetwood Mac....artists who can have successful tours but probably can't get a song into the Top 10 anymore.

The Eagles 1st album of new material since 1980 Long Road Out Of Eden was a big seller, and it was only sold in Wal-Mart. I don't think it had any radio hits though. Although there's been some exceptions, Top 40 radio has always been ageist for the most part, even more so now.

Exactly cher is apparently the only one over 50 to score a #1 hit and madonna had a #4 hit thanks in no small part to JT and the songs she released on her own were only reaching #50. In the 80s u had older acts charting in the top 10 the likes of kenny rogers or dolly patton who were mostly country acts. Even the rolling stones had a one off hit b4 a huge tour kick off in the early 90s but that smelled like alot of payola.

How many people in thier 50s reach the top 40 in any given week?

I do think prince is doing great

It was probably MTV that really killed off the older performer on the Top 40. Beforehand, most people only heard the act on the radio and didn't know what they looked like, so age (or looks) was not as much of a factor, but musical style was. There were only TV shows like American Bandstand and they mostly had performers who had a big hit already. Others like Soul Train and Midnight Special came on late at night when many people were asleep already. These programs only came on once a week, so didn't have all day, everyday saturation.

take a look at these guys long chart success:

Or :

In November 2010, Duran Duran announced the worldwide release of their 13th studio album, entitled All You Need Is Now,[48] that would be released on indie label S-Curve Records. ^^Blues & jazz are not youth driven like the Top 40 radio hits are. A lot of blues acts are older like B.B. King and Buddy Guy. The blues as a genre rarely generate big sales. Having a #1 blues album is no different than being #1 on the classical chart, it's not relevant to the maintream audience and media. Having an album hit doesn't necessarily translate to hit singles or Top 40 airplay. Acts like Pink Floyd, Rush, Miles Davis, and Black Sabbath were popular for selling albums, but had few or no hit singles.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton
