Not an ounce of filler imo and I've listened to it a good 40 times. You jumped on one comment like it's gospel, so there is a point of view from someone well part the first listen. Perhpas you should just check it out yourself instead of trolling the fDeluxe posts just to make inane commentary. Dave - what is it you consider "filler". I would be curious.

After 4 years of taking time for the project they didn't manage to handle the "sensitive" preorder issue the right way (the first substantial contact between them and their customers). Sorry, but that's weak! I preordered the CD not because I wanted to get a signed CD or to support them in the first place, I preordered the CD because I wanted to listen to the music as soon as possible.

Considering the amount of time they've spent on creating this record you can also imagine that I was quite surprised reading about some fillers on their record.

So you still think that I'm a troll making inane commentaries?

I think you are making inane comments when you play off of what ONE person says rather than taking a survey of all comments or listening for yourself before you make a judgement. As soon as ONE person says they think there is filler after one listen you post "Fillers? After 4 years of work? OMG?!" as if looking for the negative. Cbarnes...I said nothing about everyone having to like it. I said (as opposed to someone listening 1 time and declaring filler) that I had listened to it a bit more and found no filler. Simply my opinion. You post almost constantly negative comments about assocaited artists and continue to rewrite "Prince History" for a need you have of Prince to have never been collaborative...or wrong.

Ok...after a few run throughs these jams are getting a big thumbs up!!

Highlights?

Drummers & Healers

Over The Canyon

@8

Leeds Line

Lover

Sanctified

I had a reserved enthusiasm for this project, but happy to say I think they pulled it off. A Prince side-project that has proved (after almost 30 years...better late than never) that they can do it all on their own.

Maybe "filler" was the wrong word. Don't get me wrong. I think it's a really good album, there are just 3-4 tracks that are kinda just meh to me, but there are some strong ones too... They're a solid band, the vocals & the grooves are tight, but the overall production isn't very interesting IMO.

I was not criticizing what someone liked or didn't. I was criticizing the fact that they latched onto ONE mild negative and ran with that rather than looking at other reviews. PLUS they had not even heard it for themsleves and are not sharing a review...but heaping on top of someone elses opinion with no knowledge of what they are critiquing. From a guy who continues to break in on threads and bash in these forums I find your advice rather funny. Retard? Really...that is some mastery of language you have there my friend.

why is this so difficult for you? It's called an opinion. I like everything about music, Great arrangmentments, great vocals, whatever is pleasing to ME. I just don't get the appeal of this CD and what's so great about these songs and i've listened to it twice. the third time i just couldn't get through it. just as you claim to not like anything of Prince recently, that's okay as i view it simply as your opinion. if you love it, then rock on and enjoy. I still have respect for them as musicians, that's why i'm going to see them. I wish I could enjoy as much as you folks are but my taste is my taste. either way I'm happy fans are having a great time with the new release.

[Edited 10/2/11 19:53pm]

I was simply asking what you DO like...that was all. What does it for you.Not dogging your taste - as I stated above.

I understand however you started the sentence off with "Dang" as if I'm supposed to like the CD because you do. I get the feeling because you hold the music created by Associated Artists in such high regard, that you can't understand why people can't get into it. Kind of equivalent to people here who get fammed out liking every song Prince produces when its clearly not that good. I highly respect the musicianship of associated artists but often times I'm not impressed with their output. the exception is Jesse Johnson, the E-Family, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. The verdict is out on the Time album once I hear it in full.

I don't think I've ever used the work "dang" to imply someone should like what I like...lol . If anything a bit tongue in cheek. I also don't hold every associated artist or their music in high regard. Plenty I do not care for...

I know right? lol Plus for one FDeluxe has more than proved that all they need is each other, no on else. Still don't have the Time in my hands yet, but I'm pretty sure they will prove it too!

I really hope that FDeluxe sees my post because I am especially glad "Gaslight" is out! It has been a long time... 25 + 1 years, but "Autumn plays the music baby and only you and I can understand. Desire covers our faces and happens in curious places... the family has declared Mutiny!"

The new CD is brilliant and it is soooo nice to hear St. Paul and Susannah harmonizing again. Jellybean and Eric continue to bring the funk and Paul - you did an amazing job recreating the Clare Fischer orchestra! The music and lyrics are great and I sincerely *hope* we don't have to wait so long for another installment. After all, the family that plays together stays together!

I really hope success as FDeluxe comes to the group and fans old and new get the CD. I got mine through the website and it came autographed by all the band members. (Thanks FDeluxe!)

Finally received my CD today.

The album is good, especially the more energetic uptempo funk songs.

Unfortunately the ballads don't really do it for me. They make it too moody and lower the tempo far too much. Although I can somewhat appreciate the quality of "Lover" and "When You Go", I consider the other 2 ballads "Beautiful You" and "The Vigil" the weakest tracks of the album.

All in all I'm a little bit disappointed because the prereleased stuff sounded so promising funky. The album would have been much stronger if they had left out the 2 above mentioned ballads "Beautiful You" and "The Vigil".

My pre-order copy arrived, I ordered pretty late, so they must be almost done with pre-orders.

Got 4 signed postcards, signings look real since they're all with silver marker on the front except Susannah's which is is in black and on the back giggle

I've ripped the CD, but haven't listened to it yet, I wanna give it my undivided attention love

I don't understand why they didn't follow the model W&L set with WFOWC. You got a formula that works, stick with it. This is really pissing me off. And to not offer a cd/download combo is just straight up stupid.

I agree 100%, I think I've even said it myself before. The CD/flac combo of WFOWC was perfect.

I still haven't bought the remix EPs because they're not available in lossless in my region. Money's on the table guys, come and take it!!

eek ..... eek ................ eek

This album is so much better than I thought it was going to be. That sounds like I didn't have much faith in the band, but I thought I was going to have to 'make myself' like a lot of it with repeated listens or something, but the friggin' album hooked my instantly.

Over The Canyon / Gaslight / Beautiful You - phew, what a '1,2 punch... knockout!' piece of tracking!

Oh em gee, I love 'Beautiful You' so much.

The (synth, I guess) string work is great, really works for me and adds the icing to the cake just like the strings on the Family LP. I'm not always crazy about mid-tempo funk tracks that plod along like @8, but the strings really lift it and hold my interest. Horns and strings on 'The Vigil' are great.

The Vigil I think is going to be a huge grower, it doesn't sound like much to start, but by the end.... love

When You Go... Might be my favourite track, the melody is beautiful. Flute, piano, strings, their voices together. touched

eek Is this real life?! Did the Family really reform and release a f-cking KICK ASS album? eyepop excited faint

Sorry for gushing, I had the reply window open on my virgin listen and just added to it stream of consciousness as I got through each track - I am really knocked out how good this LP is! cool

Okay, so here's my initial thoughts. 1) A lil bit of Susannah goes a long way. This was something Prince understood and used her more as an accent than featured vocalist. 2) St. Paul is better at playing Prince than playing himself. There's something about his vocals that just don't work for me with this style of music. 3) Clare. Fischer. Is. Missed.

Beyond that, there's some good moments. Eric Leeds stands out and the first three tracks are solid but then the quality starts to derop and hits a major low with When You Go. Is that the horrid slow song? Oy!! "We fly kites?" Really? disbelief

I just don't feel compelled to repeat listen (I've listened twice now). It had the same faults that St. Paul's solo album had when I bought them because I loved The Family album, just not engaging enough for a revisit. I don't know, I hope the work is a sleeper and will grow on me. I've misread albums on initial listenings before. I hope this is one of those cases. I'm happy for the people involved too...but that doesn't make for a good listen.

I'm surprised sosgemini. I really like Susannah here, it made me think what a 2nd Family would've been like with more democratic share of vocals.

I agree real lush strings by Fischer would always be welcome, but Paul does a pretty good immitation I think. I assume this was a budget restriction?

Probably. One of their interviews on Yowie (?) they said that Clare Fisher and his son listened to the strings and loved what Paul did. You really can't do better than that if you can't get the actual guy.

Paul did an amazing job on the string arrangements. New favorite of the week is When You Go, love the vocals so much on this one, live even better. The new Time album is sneaking in my rotation too but FDeluxe isn't going anywhere anytime soon cool
