Dez was a monster lead guitarist but I'm also favoring Wendy for her influence and her rhythm. I love live versions of "D.M.S.R.", "Irresistible Bitch", "I Would Die 4 U" and "Baby I'm a Star" that feature her funky scratching. Also her jazzy Police-like chord phrasings did overlooked wonders for songs like "Purple Rain". If you hear Prince play it without Wendy he uses much more straightforward chords but she made them more dense. To me that almost makes the song. Even the often curmodgeonly Joni Mitchell found her playing interesting. Pretty impressive for a 19 year old white girl. We really need more Wendy and Lisas today.

Since u put it that way. I will change my opinion and say they both served there purpose at the time for different reasons. But I 'm just partial to Dez since he was there before Prince hit it big and right at the brink of his superstardom. Dez book gave good insight to what happen behind the scenes & why he left.

eye will ALWAYS think of prince like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. eye mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that prince wasn't of this earth, eye would not have been that surprised. R.I.P. prince

Well since you put it that way I'm going to agree! They were both appropriate for their respective eras. Dez definitely brought that rock edge when it was needed most and of course Wendy was still a high school girl when that was going on. No way she could have dreamed up the solo to "Little Red Corvette" yet. Then when he was a rock star he definitely needed the jazz and pop influence from Wendy and Lisa or Purple Rain, "Raspberry Beret", Parade and parts of Sign O The Times might not have ended up the way they did. One of the reasons we love the music so much is that things (mostly) happened they way they should have in the '80s.

Are we still answering this question? Dez - if we are talking music and not popularity. Get real.

Hello Purple Party People,

I was looking at the 1999 concert the other week and I have to say Dez Dickerson is just a beast on the lead guitar, then I was watching the Parade tour and Wendy is off the charts during that tour! So, my question who is the best between Wendy and Dez? I can't decide... Aaron6ix neutral

Wendy kicks ass! Have you heard "When Doves Cry"?? Sure I'll give Dez credit for "Little Red Corvette" that was pretty kick-ass too. Other than that and, "Modernaire". Nothing from Dez has really impressed me.

Wendy didnt play the guitar part on When Doves Cry. THat was all Prince.

Prince may be the purple Yoda, but Wendy & Lisa and Eric Leeds also sit on the Jedi Council.

Wasn't Dez having an issue with Prince 'dirty' music by the end of the 1999 era? songs like Head

And then didn't he play that song last year at that show that featured Mazarati, the Family, Dez, and some of the Revolution being there?

Dez did becum saved right when Prince started to crossover & felt uncomfortable with Prince's raunchy lyrics & image. Plus Prince started seperating himself from the band & riding in his own seperate tour bus sometimes with female companions like the sexy Vanity Dez started not showing up 4 rehearsals.

I don't know anything about last year show with Mazariti

Can someone give us more details about Dickersons departure from the band?

Why he didn't show on rehearsals?

what set the friction between Prince and Dez?

Buy Dez book its a page turner. It gives good insight on the behind the scenes real Prince and what a band member goes through when the leader is turning into a "mega star"....

The one story I heard was that after Dez was "saved" he was having problems with Prince's raunch. When the tour hit Minneapolis (I think it was the Controversy tour, maybe 1999) he had rallied the other band members to stand up to Prince so they wouldnt have to play "Head" in front of Dez's family. All of the members agreed but when it came time to stand up to Prince and make the request, everyone bailed on him.

As for missing rehearsals, Wendy was quoted as saying she filled in on some soundchecks during the 1999 tour when Dez failed to show up. How he would miss the soundcheck but make the show makes no sense, but thats what she said.

Perhaps I am 'incorrect' on the NAME of the event but, it was at The Cabooze with The Family, Mazerati and a few other Related Artist. The man is a wealth of knowledge on the music business and history. I could've sat there a listened to him talk all evening. Dude is mad short too ... LoL

Peace ... & Stay Funky ...
