Dez all the way....Wendy's solo in the live purple rain tour was horrid on "When Doves Cry"

(the Emmy award winning ) WENDY MELVOIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dez was great in the band, but honestly you could throw a rock and find a guitar player with his style of playing. That new wave rock music that he brought to the table got old before the credits of Purple Rain were over.

Wendy on the other hand brought such a deverse style of guitar playing that she could funk with the best of them and then bring tears with her acoustic playing. I know some people want to stir shit posting this question over and over, but no matter how you slice it, Dez wasn't/isn't HALF the musician Wendy is.

Honestly, it's obvious that Dez had stronger chops than Wendy at the time, but Wendy was more creative. She did things were different, and she was funky as shit, too! So, my preference is Wendy.

I think the real question that no-one ever brings up is Miko vs. Wendy. Cause Miko was fucking tight and very funky. Miko was almost more disciplined than Prince on the those chicken scratch funk riffs. Wendy wasn't tight like Miko, but she had tons of personality in her playing, they played off each other really well.

- It already happened on previous tours, like London O2. He usually does arrangements for that. And he rarely seems to play drums live lately, it seems.

Dez by a mile, love em both but watching a lot of pre Purple rain DVDs lately shows waht a monster player he was.

I for one don't worship the ground she walks on, but I won't downplay my admiration so those who don't get it won't be offended. Can't really downplay someone who got to help CREATE the music and had Prince's total trust. She added SO much to live show and studio, the others you mentioned were great live but never got to co-write shit with Prince, so that kind of speaks for itself.

I have to say that this thread is very interesting...I see both sides. For those who don't give Dez his props just check out the 1999 dvds alone and I think ur opinion will change, Dez's style married very well with Prince during that time period. Now, had Dez stayed in the group during the Purple Rain days, I don't think we would have seen all the colors that Wendy along with Lisa brought to the table. The success of Purple Rain just allowed Prince to stretch musically with his band mates, and maybe Dez could have been apart of that if had of stayed... Nice discussion PURPLE PARTY PEOPLE! Aaron6ix

I agree, too. Wendy has such great "feeling" to her playing. And she was FUNKY on the rhythm guitar by the end of her time with Prince. But Dez was still probably a better guitar player, then. I also have no clue about how he sounds these days.

He'd asked Bobby Z to meet him down at First Avenue one morning where he told Bobby that he just wasn't interested in the music anymore. He hated Lisa and how much she flaunted her relationship with Wendy (whom he had a particularly big crush on because she was a guitar player too), he didn't like Brown Mark because Brown Mark had rich parents and was kind of a spoiled brat. And his relationship with Dr Fink was tenuous at best after an incident involving Dez, Fink, and a woman who would go on to star in some famous Lifetime movies.

Anyway, Bobby Z was sitting at his drum kit when Dez had arrived at First Avenue and before he'd gotten a chance to move to a more private place, Dez had already begun spilling his guts. Just so happens Bobby was also taking care of a task Prince had asked him to do which was to record a live drum track to a new song he was working on at the time ("Xtra Lovable"). The hot mics picked up Dez's conversation with Bobby and Prince heard it. It was smoothed over, but Prince kept the incident in the back of his mind for quite a while (including when he had pulled the track out again later in the year to work on for possible inclusion in the Vanity 6 album - going as far as referencing the incident in the track during a guitar solo).

Am I the only one who felt that Dez played too loud?

Now Im not a musician so please dont assault, but it always seemed that when he would do a solo, he drowned out the rest of the band (and not in a good way).

He seemed not to fit in if you know what I mean.

I disagree, Wendy is my fav but Dez still had a lot of influence in Prince musical and visual direction

Dez brought Punk 2 Prince, Dez was already what we started to see Prince become during the Dirty Mind era

Dez hard rock influenced Prince, that's why the shows started getting more amped up
