Rad's Short Tenure

I was wondering why she was in the group fro such a short time?
I remember listening to 1 of the shows back in
2004 which was a warm up show for the Musicology tour & at the end a song Prince signaled to go in to another which was Mama Feelgood & it sounds like she missed her cue because se says "how was I supposed to know"

So I was wondering did she just not cut it because after that gig she didn't last in the touring group.

Her tenure was so short, I've never even heard of her! lol

Lol if u blinked she was gone. I don't know how many gigs she did but it wasn't many & I thought she was going to be in lineup for the 2004 Musiclogy arena tour but she was gone before it kicked off.

Rose Ann Dimalanta, known by the stage name Rad (styled rad.), is a singer-songwriter and keyboardist from Oakland. She fluently moves through funk, Brazilian, Afro-Cuban and R&B styles and has been described as the "Tania Maria of Funk".

Rose Ann Dimalanta, a.k.a rad., grew up in Oakland, California and began playing piano at the age of 4. In 1990, she completed her jazz studies at U.C. Berkeley. By this time, she had already played alongside Bay Area jazz greats like Pete Escovedo and was quickly recognized as an exceptionally talented pianist. In 1988, she met Sound Engineering student Michael Kirsch at the College for Recording Arts in San Francisco. The two were married in 1991 and Rose Ann moved to Kirsch's hometown Hamburg, Germany. In 1992, she started her solo project rad. with the first release radified on her husband's record label, Soulciety Records. The record instantly won critical acclaim and sold over 50 000 units independently. The following years brought collaborations with Tower of Power, Roger Troutman, Howard Johnson, Marc Russo of the Yellow Jackets, Sheila E. and others. After leaving the label Soulciety Records in 1996, both rad. and Kirsch moved back to the San Francisco Bay Area and started attracting an all star cast of musicians to the project, including jazz guitarist Ray Obiedo and Tower of Power drummer David Garibaldi. rad.'s band and live concerts have been a favorite among musicians everywhere and word about her talents traveled to Prince's Paisley Park in Minneapolis, MN. Prince invited rad. to join his band, the New Power Generation which she did for his Musicology tours in 2003 and 2004. rad. left the New Power Generation to focus more on her new born daughter and finish work on the album East Babe which was released on hers and Kirsch's label 7 Bridges Recordings in 2007. She has been touring in 2007 and 2008 with long time Prince saxophonist Eric Leeds and long time Santana drummer Billy Johnson alongside Jazz guitarist Ray Obiedo and bass talent Marc van Wageningen. A live album with this band "Live in Japan" was released in early 2008. rad. was joined by Patrice Rushen on her next studio album "Getting Down Is Free". After a brief stint with the Prime Time Band on NBC's Jay Leno show she returned to live touring in 2009.

rad is an astounding vocalist, composer and musician. Go get some of her live boots and you'll see.

Her live band is also much more of a 'headhunter' effort than Prince's latest bands.

In a word: the girl is REALLY talented and I guess that brought more than a rub with Prince.

That's probably why Prince got rid of her then - didn't want any competition.

She had an awesome stage presence that has been lacking from Prince's shows for ages. I saw her during the infamous Filmore show and her chemistry worked wonderfully with Princes. Now, I am not going to vouch for her stills as a musician but as an entertainer, she was fun to watch. And that's what's missing from a lot of Prince's tours of late. He's got it (and still the best around but the playfulness and chemistry that was evident from his very first band up to the original NGP band has been replaced by competent musicians (nah, excellent musicians) who are about as exciting as to watch as paint dry.

Well I think having competent musicians when you P's age is a good thing as I don't expect anyone to jump around the stage in their 50s and I don't need to see that type of show anymore. I remember reading that RAD was dropped because she was dropping notes all over the stage and I listened to her music as well as an interview with her on KPFA a few years ago and I was not impressed with her solo stuff at all.

Needless to say, her piano playing makes Prince's scrub the floor.

^I don't know if that's true because I'd rather kick myself in the balls than listen/watch a Musicology (or pre-) performance.

All I can say is that what I heard from her was astounding.Try the Bremen gig.

If anyone has the video of Prince on the Ellen show...it appears that Prince turns around to shoot her a look. She probably over sang her part.

I remember when Rad left the group. I really didn't follow the band prior to the tour in 2004. However, there was an Orger who was an insider who announced that Rad was out before it became common knowledge. When asked why, it was insinuated that Rad was singing off tuned and Prince had had it. And someone agreed and posted a video of a live performance around that time where evidently Rad hit a bad note and Prince actually turned around to glare/look at her. AFter that performance she was gone.

The orger's identity was revealed some time later, when the orger died. It was one of the personal tailor's of Prince who was the orger. And I can't remember his name now.

The story about concencentrating on music and getting pregnant came out well after she was gone and the tour was in full swing.

Who was on here defending her, saying she was Prince's personal DJ, as if she was on the payroll 24/7 still today? LOL Girl is GONE, never to be given-a-shit-about again.

I guess you missed the post above about RAD screwing up on the Ellen show and being canned shortly after. Her resume may be impressive to you but she still got canned from her gig with P for fucking up on stage. End of discussion

Well according to orgers this happened on the Ellen show. Maybe someone should look for the footage. In addtion, if you read this post apparently an orger had some inside info on Rad departure.

I've watched the footage back.

There's nothing definitive on there that I can see and hear that suggests RAD royALLY screwed up. At one point during 'I Feel For You' she is singing backing vocals to Prince's chorus lead. His head clearly turns to that side of the stage in her general direction, but the expression on his face is not visible, and when his head turns back there is nothing which suggests he has looked across to express his disapproval.

I can recall at the time thinking that, notwithstanding some people claiming that RAD had messed up, the video recording was hardly convincing evidence. But perhaps I'm not picking up on some element of the performances that others can see / hear?
