. Songs like Mountains, Sometimes it Snows in April and Power Fantastic where they actually wrote the music, you can hear that "sound" of theirs.

When Prince wrote Mountains and sometimes it snows in April he hadn't seen the Revolution for 6 months. They were a few thousand miles away from him He was in Nice on the french riviera and gave the Revolution the songs he had written just before getting in the studio (he had recorded most of the album himself already).

Now again having seen the shows in London. Take Maceo Parker, Renato, John Blacwell they have a much BETTER influence on Prince's music than Wendy & Lisa ever did. Simply the band he has right now is the best he ever had. Moreover Prince is a much more accomplished musician nowadays than Wendy & Lisa. If you want to hear a HUGE influence in Prince's music listen to the Rainbow Children and listen to John Blackwell. The guy changed Prince's approach to music completely. And that's a quite amazing influence.

You might as well throw Larry Grahm in there too...

What's your point? The religious stuff...well Prince last week didn't mention anything at all about the fact we had to become JW or belive in what he believes in. No no he just played the guitar ten times better than he could back in the eighties. His guitar play has become totally amazing. Oh sorry...I was talking about music you weren't

Sorry but I have to laugh at the "Wendy got a big head" comment. Anyone who knows her will tell you she's completely the opposite.

Well maybe now she is

I know for a fact that none of the Revolution were too excited about Prince adding "Pips" to the Revolution. I know when I seen the Parade tour I was wishing they'd get out of Brownmark's way.

Brownmark... I don't have anything against the guy but he had the stage presence of a wet paper towel.

I like Wendy and Lisa's music and their collaberations however they are not Better than Prince by a long shot. They are wonderful musicians and I don't understand why they cannot seem to get record deals or sell many records. You gotta remember Prince was and is the Star and They were in His Band. Many fans just don't care about Prince's Associates. They only care about Prince. Listen, Prince changes his sound and musicians often for different ideas and influences and whatever he is into at the time. He was looking for a different direction as he always tends to travel. I think his Symbol album,Gold Album and Emancipation and Come were Spectacular and they were nowhere near him for this work. Granted with them he seemed to have more success on the POP charts it seems. But Prince is and always will be Great . He is the Supreme Artiste! I truly hope that Wendy and Lisa are able to get a record deal and get their music heard they are Wonderful in their own Right and it's a shame they are not appreciated enough. I saw them live and they are really Great.

wendy and lisa may not technically be the best performers...they may not be able to dance and sing...and they act like actual humans...but, the emotion they are able to convey with a piano and a guitar are unmatched...no overdubs...no layers upon layers of backing vocals...no protools...just them and their instruments...and oye!! the harmonies... sigh

to think that the bulk of Girlbros was recorded in their home..with Tchad engineering and re-mixing afterwards...perfection!!!

This is semi crazy...Prince utilized W&L prominantly after the album 1999...made Wendy a star so to speak...his music changed drastically because of this influence, collaborations etc..however it isnt as if he never had any musical ideas, couldnt play piano on his own etc without W&L...Wendy got a big head plain and simple ...threatend to leave etc after Prince began to utilize Wally, Brooke, and Jerome as part of the show, seemingly putting the music second. Nerve if you ask me. Sure they may have contributed greatly but damn...dont start trippin. She didnt say shit when she was a main attracton in Purple Rain while Brownmark was relegated to a rare scwene here and there etc. SOTT was released without their contributions for the most part. Dream Factory in its original configuration would have been cool too-- Like the controversy goes...some ay Prince lost his fire when he hired Wendy..that his funk wasnt the same (it wasnt)..and some say he went to higher levels (Prince says this himself in Old Friends on sale for bargain price). Their influence cant be denied, but I think their main importance was the atmosphere they created with Prince. Giving him this family, closeness and togetherness that he didnt have previously (seemingly). But people shoudnt trip and make Prince th e be all to end all bad guy--W&L are both strong willed and Im sure were not angels in the whole scenario. Be objective.

Absolutely...but you see for many ex prince fans you play the worst song ever and you just mention it's from 195-86 and their immediate reaction is "waoow wonderful...masterpiece" and so on.

Place in Heaver and Girls of my dreams are perfect examples of two very average songs totally overrated by fans.

Yeah W&L are great live but they're not likely to get a record deal. They simply won't sell records to anyone outside Prince's fanbase and even though some of those don't like them. It really is a crying shame. I think i just miss the sheer wierdness of the work Prince did with them. The Rainbow Children is a step forward though and so is ONA even though they aren't great albums. You actually feel as if something substantial is around the corner.

Okay, I don't know what book you read but Prince put the lyrics to both Mountains and Sometimes it Snows in April after Wendy and Lisa played him their music. Prince DID make some changes to Mountains other than that like Power Fantastic, it was their music. And I agree with you on the fact that the new band is great live, forsure one of his most talented for sure, but you're saying they have a BETTER influence on Prince? Once they can make a great album together in the studio and then we'll talk influence. They are purely a great live band. And John Blackwell didn't do anything for Prince's sound that Michael B. didn't do 12 years ago. Michael was the one who brought that big juicy drum sound to Prince's music, and I feel he was a much better drummer than Blackwell. Take away the stick twirling and he's got nothing on Bland.

1) You lost all your credibility just there (see above). Blackell is the versatile drummer Prince ever had. I love Michael Bland but saying is a much better drummer than Blackwell is a complete non sense.Bland has the tendancy to play always in the same style (but don't get me wrong I love him!).

2) Now yes Prince did a record with Blackewll. It's called Rainbow Children. And never a musician had such an influence on a Prince CD ( as an instrumentist). Never the drums had sound better on a Prince CD.

3) Moreover the books you read about prince are for most of them full of crap, asumptions etc...

4) I much prefer the band he had for sign o the times + lovesexy than in 1994/95 with Bland and Thompson + the one he has right now than the fucking Revolution!!! I loved The Revolution but I'm fed up with people saying Prince would be nothing without wendy and lisa. I think it works the other way around actually. They would be nothing without him. Actually who gives a fuck about average albums like Eroica apart from nostalgic Prince fans who think everything stopped for him in 1986!

And again why nobody here is mentionning Wendy's voice? well I know why because it is embarassing. She is a fucking
poor singer I'm telling you. They made me sleep when I saw them on stage. I couldn't even hear Wendy singing. The weakest voice I've ever heard from any performer I have seen on stage is Wendy's.

And what I think is the funniest thing about this topic, is the sides are so divided like Prince and the girls hate each other or something. Prince has never had anything but great things to say about them, has he ever written a song about any of his other "hired musicians"? No, he hasn't. And Wendy and Lisa have nothing but nice things to say about Prince and you can tell they all still miss each other and love each other deeply. Sure, in the 90's Wendy and Lisa sounded bitter about the breakup, just because they wanted to tell it like it was, and what seemed to hurt them the most was that he let their friendship suffer. Prince has asked them often to come back and play with him, but he wanted to relive the past each time and they want to do something new. Like for the Vh-1 Honors he asked them to come play, and he wanted them to lead a parade down the aisle and them play like a big medley of Revolution hits. Wendy and Lisa asked him why couldn't the 3 of them just sit down with acoustic instruments and play whole songs together. Now, if they were to play together again (which mark my words WILL happen) which would most of you rather see? A hits medley or an acoustic set with just the 3 of them???

Losing my credibility with you will not keep me up at night. And what you feel is complete nonsense I feel is complete truth, so who's right here? And Bland has a tendancy to play in the same style? He can play jazz, funk and whatever else Prince needed him to do.

2) Now yes Prince did a record with Blackewll. It's called Rainbow Children. And never a musician had such an influence on a Prince CD ( as an instrumentist). Never the drums had sound better on a Prince CD.

Weak sarcasm, yes I am aware of the Rainbow Children. And when I heard it the drums blew me away, but the drums stood out more on Diamonds and Pearls because they took Prince's music in a NEW direction, not back to a sound he's had before.

3) Moreover the books you read about prince are for most of them full of crap, asumptions etc...

Damn dude chill out. If you actually read most of these posts I don't see too many "Prince would be nothing without Wendy and Lisa". Who gives a fuck?? Uh..a lot of us who can actually handle more than one type of music per decade.

ONA on the left side.
WPL on the right...

I know which I am gonna pick.

But I must say that ONA-the song gives me goose bumps...

All people discussed here have grown over the years. Dunno if thye will ever get together. Hope so for THEM, cuz like mentioned before; they seemed to care about eachother a great deal...so for them I hope they can become friends again. And maybe they already are. Or still are. Whatever.
I must say that the last two albums by W&L mean alot to me. I also know that some of the songs on Girlbros must have brought tears to Prince's eyes.
People always will want to see these three (or four; do not forget Susannah Melvoin's input here) together for obvious reasons.
And that reason is music. I do not live in the past when I say it would be great to see them together. But I will have lots of fun on the 28th of October.
And when W&L will release their new album (go girls!) then I'll be the first to buy it. For they do something not many people out there can; paint...

Ice, I think that many of us here like/love « deep blue » music that we can listen over and over, the head between our hands, wondering about the meaning of life, saying « it’s beautiful, it’s beautiful ….» I caricature smile
But when I’m on a dance floor, drunk, at 2 am , Wendy & Lisa’s best effort to be pop (« are you my baby »,
«waterfall», « satisfaction » or maybe even « let’s say » (I love this one) can’t keep the distance 5 seconds with : peach, acknowledge of me, partyman, now, sex in the summer, 1+1+1 = 3, endless list…..
I ‘m waiting for W&L’s pop masterpiece like « when you where mine » ( & don’t tell me that waterfall, a very good song imo, is in this category…)
Prince can do, & has done, the same kind of music that W& L, we certainly all knew it before « the truth » album, but The Girlbros are weak to make me dance my ass off

Wendy and Lisa's personalities have always been so different from Prince's personalities, and in the studio, that made for a fine blend. They always made him sound really good. Those girls were like sisters to him, they were more than just bandmembers. And it showed in the music. He was never as close to any future bandmembers as those two. It's just like Elton John and Bernie Taupin (forgive me if I spelled his name wrong)...they're song collaborators, but they're also the best of friends, and that friendship comes through clearly in Elton's music. That's how it was with Prince, Wendy and Lisa I believe.
All three of them loved Joni; There was some of Joni's influence on Prince's early albums, but I believe Wendy and Lisa were able to bring it out of him more. And that's cool. And yes, while I will admit that Prince's music has lacked something since they left, I dont believe that necessarily makes his music worse than theirs. He's living a different experience than they are, so his music has reflected that. Again it goes back to their personalities being totally different. When Wendy and Lisa's brother died, they dealt with their pain on GirlBros. Prince's baby died, and he chose to hide his pain from his music. Perhaps if Wendy and Lisa had still been with him, they would've encouraged him to explore his feelings and let it out. Who knows. But Prince dealt with it the best way he knew how. Even if he was "going through the motions"...that's STILL where he was, that's still WHO he was...because its part of his personality. he's working out his life issues through his music, he always has, and he always will. I honestly believe though that TRC is the most honest thing he's created in a long while. You may not like the lyrics (hell, even I dont like all the lyrics biggrin) but you can TELL that HE's sincere about what he's saying. And it shows in the music on that CD.

Wendy and Lisa asked him why couldn't the 3 of them just sit down with acoustic instruments and play whole songs together.

*Gooey looks at the possibilities*

VERY well put nod , and how nice it would be to end this thread right here!

If you mention the 28th of october it means you will be at the Paris show. After what you're gonna see you will come back here and think "Prince is in much better hands now with his band". You are not gonna believe your ears and your eyes.

Very well put LCD.
