Whoah! Good for him!

If you please, also do something GOOD with all that money Prince, like for example supporting new and real talent?

asg: Thanks for posting this. It's a very interesting article and in the interview Prince is relaxed and informative. It's a very worthy read.

As for the numbers, they are indeed quite impressive. But you have to note with that, that publishing earnings are not counted in this.

And with publishing you can make a LOT of money. Often much more than with selling records.

Now, as the article states after giving these impressive numbers, Prince has been lacking airplay a lot the last 10 years or so, and he is still lacking airplay.

In the days with Warner Prince had LOTS of airplay... WORLDWIDE. And not only airplay, but also many covers and other uses of his songs for which he and Warner Chappel have been paid.

All the income from these "publications" (and often also "reproductions" or "deravitive works") of his songs were earned with Prince's "publishing rights" (i.e. the copyrights in the compositions and lyrics of his songs, not the copyrights in his sound recordings/masters to which this artcile refers).

Further, the income Prince made with touring in the 80's and early 90's (when he often toured big stadiums around the world) is also not included. (not saying he always made a profit touring back then)

If you take all that income into account the figures will - very possibly - look quite a bit different.

That is not to say that it was better for Prince, financially or otherwise, while he was with Warner; I am only pointing that aspect out to give a more complete picture

And personally think that Prince is much more happy, now that he has control, is in the spotlight, being himself and still making plenty of bucks. Freedom can obviouisly be very sweet when everything turns out alright.

Good job Prince. thumbs up!

Interesting article. I think some of the numbers are a bit suspect and difficult to prove, but the tone of the article is great. You can tell the writer is a big fan. I agree they should remaster SOTT and others.

It was very interesting to read Prince say: "You tell' em that!"

To me that would mean that he really has no say whatsoever over re-masters, but I could be wrong about that.

I just dl'd and burned it, listening to it for the first time now. I'm liking it, definitely different from Musicology though NPGMC lists it as a 2004 release. For one thing, there's some profanity and sexier lyrics. "Classic", I dunno, need to listen to it a few (dozen) more times. biggrin music

Do other artists come to him for advice? Yes, Prince allows, "but what's more interesting is when the executives come to me for advice." So what does he tell them? "You get the artist you deserve," he says.

His much-discussed path as a Jehovah's Witness has gotten too much sensationalized coverage, he says; he's interested in spirituality and answers, not strange ceremonies or theories. "I'm very practical. You go Trekkie on me, I gotta go."

I'm luvin' him in these interviews this year!! thumbs up! This article is a must-read! Oh, and the numbers stuff is interesting too! $7 per copy, way to go! I've seen that number thrown around before, I guess it's credible.

I don't think he is making any video's lately is he? And he has to pay for many other costs than you mentioned too.

Also, something is only a loan when you agreed to it being a loan.

Btw. I fail to see why you are saying this. Couldn't you answer my forst post directed at you?

You never hear Prince have the self effacing honesty you read here. He acknowledges that he looked like an arse. I have never seen that before. He certainly has much more humility now that he is older and more settled.

AGREED! Fantastic article. That's a great quote bkw, here's some more I like:

Does he ever just put down the guitar for days or weeks on end?

"I hear music still, but I spend long periods when I don't actually play it." Inspiration comes, but he just retains it. "I was hearing a song today in my head. I'll be messing with that later."

I'm surprised, I picture him tinkering on some instrument most every day of his life lol

His much-discussed path as a Jehovah's Witness has gotten too much sensationalized coverage, he says; he's interested in spirituality and answers, not strange ceremonies or theories. "I'm very practical. You go Trekkie on me, I gotta go."

lol lol

He'd love to see remastered and expanded versions of his work and surround-sound versions of his classics, but with the master tapes in Warner's hands, he can't make that happen. "I can go re-record it and put it out - but should I have to?"

This gives me hope that he's abandoned the idea of rerecording everything, which I was never happy about. It's a load of energy to put in when we all just want the originals anyway. woot!

From the past decade, here are the 10 best Prince songs you may have never heard.

CALHOUN SQUARE

The 1998 Crystal Ball track has a loose tone set by the studio chatter that introduces the track, as Prince advises a musician: "You're listening to the drummer, but you still wanna have fun. It shouldn't be work." Languid, funky bass and guitar lines turn into a roaring guitar rock chorus, a mélange of everything Prince does best.

OH YES, BITCHES!!! lol headbang

He divides his music between pressed CDs (the jazzy NEWS and the latest return to form, Musicology) and online-only discs (The Slaughterhouse and a new classic, Chocolate Invasion). Much of that music is as strong as his best-known work, such as Purple Rain and 1999.

The author pretty much lost all credibility when he tried to say that much of the music on the Slaughterhouse and CI is as good as PR and 1999. The Slaughterhouse is awful, and Chocolate Invasion is not "a new classic."

It's amazing what one can do once one learns the ways of the music business. Prince's current commercial success has not been matched from his 80's and 90's status, but his monetary value has gone up per disc sale.

I hope the artists out there today will thank Prince later on down the road, when they learn from what he has done... this door, he has opened for them. The music industry should be shaking in their collective boots.
