How To Do This and That - (Due to The New Changes) - Continued

Well, since Ben made some changes some things don't work how they used to so we've all had to learn new ways of doing things through hit and miss.

I thought it would be a good idea to create this thread as a resource of information that we can all share and help one another as we still learn how to do some things a bit differently like posting youtube links or posting thread links for instance.

I'll be adding more helpful hints as I come across any.

It would save a lot of people from reaching for that bottle of extra strength tylenol lol

The last thread locked itself. Here is the link http://prince.org/msg/3/338872

Seriously, this "upgrade" to the org was terrible. It's been months now, and it's just getting more and more annoying.

What is the problem though? I've had no real issues, just a couple of minor ones, which seemed to have worked themselves out. hmmm

I'm going to do a separate reply so folks who still have issues with posting YouTube links can get a better grip on things.

I'm going to do a separate reply so folks who still have issues with posting YouTube links can get a better grip on things.

These are some of my issues with it:

It takes a long time to load. I org from both a Mac and a PC, both about six months old...and the first time of the day I hit "reply" on a thread, it's a long loading process.

You still cannot hotlink to an org page. That seems ridiculous to me.

The upgrade did not add any usefulness or functionality, as far as I can see. Maybe it made it easier to put in pictures, but nothing else, unless I'm missing something. For me, though, it just added a lot of ugly things: That weird first space it puts in front of your cursor when you hit "reply," the way it doesn't always properly sort who said what when quoting several replies...little things like that, which I know aren't very important.

Well they're important to whoever uses them of course. I used to have issues with it loading slowly, but it seems now that it's not an issue. I don't have a super new computer. I have a Dell Precision M70. The thing loads good on this one, but I had expressed concern at one point about it. I wonder if it's a browser thing for you? Currently I'm using Flock (Chromium version, not the Mozilla engined one). Before I was using Firefox, but that piece of crap is so clunky now, I refuse to have it on my computer.

The hot linking seems to be an issue that could easily be fixed, and I wonder why Ben hasn't addressed it at all.

Yeah, good points. I alternate between IE and Firefox, and you're right...Firefox is slower. The linking issue is definitely more annoying. It would just be nice to be able to quickly and easily hotlink and to embed videos on the fly (YouTube and others). I know the reasons the mods and Ben want to make it harder, not easier, to embed videos but I don't agree with them. (But that has nothing to do with the new editing stuff, so I guess I'm digressing.) I can live with the changes, so I guess I should just accept things and move on. But I'm curmudgeonly enough to not want to do that. biggrin

I don't think they want to make it harder to embed videos. He's disabled HTML (although I can still edit HTML in my replies if I want) for the most part, and he could easily disallow videos. It's just Prince and his fucker minions that don't want Prince music on a prince site. The genius in that is lost on me.

Give Flock a go. I'm enjoying it. The new version based on Chrome is quite nice, so far. It's all very Social Network enabled too, as you'll learn from the sidebar.

Oh, one other thing about links that is incredibly annoying: They open in the same window, not a new one. They should always open in a new one.

Hold down control when you click.

If you create a link, you can set the option for it to open in a new window or tab.

Hmmm. The times I've created posts with a link, I've selected Open in a New Window and it doesn't matter. And since most others aren't doing it, it doesn't seem to matter. It should be a default. I would think it would be easily changed.

Then again, luv4u's original post has a link to an org page that actually works and it opens in a new window, so maybe the problem is indeed just with me.

Yeah, I need to read the tips.

I forgot how to post a video and some pictures don't seem to show for me.

There was also something else I was having trouble with but I forgot what it was at the moment.

HOW TO EMBED A YOUTUBE VIDEO ON PRINCE.ORG

There are two ways of doing this. I will post solutions to the move typical problem, then I'll post a quicker and easier solution.

Problem #1:

When you use the cut and paste the URL of a YouTube video, sometimes it shows up as a link, opposed to just text. The URL being a link is where the problem resides.

Example:

Doesn't work, right? So here's what you do:

Solution #1:

Remove the "link". Using your mouse, navigate your cursor to anywhere within the link and click. Both the Chain and Broken Chain link will highlight above. Now click the Broken Chain icon, to the left of the A. This action will remove the URL from being an actual "link" (breaking the link), and treat it just as text. Once you do this, your code should look like this:

Of course there should be NO SPACES. It should be the YouTube code, the URL, and the End YouTube Code. Your video will now embed. Please note, you only need the URL you see above. You don't need the rest of the URL when they look like this:

http://www.youtube.com/wa...eature=sub or

http://www.youtube.com/wa...e=featured

The only part you need is from http: through the "&" symbol. The weird 11 set of characters is the video ID. Anything from "&" and after is useless. Let me highlight what you need:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=trmG0mgrkM8&feature=featured

You do NOT need the red part. The BOLD is the only part you need. However, you can skip ALL THAT by doing the following:

Solution #2:

Grab just the video ID. See the "trmG0mqrkM8" after the "watch?v=" and before "&"? Put that 11 digit video ID between the YouTube code. See below:

(no spaces, of course)

That alone will also embed your video! Use either of those solutions (the second I think is 100x easier), and you'll have it made.

Sidenote: Should the solution #2 still be a "link", simply follow the steps in Solution 1 to remove it. It HAS to be just TEXT, not a LINK of any sort.

OK, no problem.....I know how to embed youtube links, thread links, post pictures, do avatars;

however, I still haven't caught on to doing a link outside of the org...so if someone can

explain that again, I'd be more than delighted lol

It's annoying when the link is attached to the org, cuz I forget and close it......then ya'll know

the problem that causes lol

I agree. It should be default. It was before the changes.
