For the Love of Vitiligo... ...can we please, please, have a Michael Jackson forum?

yeha...i gotta admit i too am getting really tired of the mj threads but i seriously cant figure a solution short of an mj sticky...what's frustrating is that mj fans seem to be co-opting the music:non-prince forum as an alt-mj forum and i really don't think that was the intent of the forum...
so the question is, do we restrict discussion or just deal with it? i open up the floor for discussion. Space for sale...

I suggest maybe creating an MJ section, and all the MJ threads could go there. I know it has been talked about and the idea rejected. However, for the sake of organization, and to spare the flood of MJ threads dominating the Non Prince section, it might be worth exploring the ideas.

I almost really do think that the hijacking fo MJ threads is going insane. I just about cant listen to some of his songs now because I see his anme so much lol. Can we just get a MJ sticky?
And I vote no to a MJ forum...no one will post in there and this dying trend like Sandra and Joyce will pass Straight Jacket Funk Affair

i really hate setting up arbitrary rules, but what if we set up a rule that says when a particular artist has more than, say, five threads made about them in the space of a week, we start a sticky catch-all thread for that artist and we lock all further threads started on that artist for the space of a month, or until it seems obvious that the dialog in the sticky has tapered off...?
i'm not saying this is a great idea or that we should do it...i'm just throwing it out there as an idea that perhaps someone else can build upon.

Please- no separate MJ forum. He has his own fansites for discussion of his music. I think Anx's idea works well. Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! Let'a celebrate his legacy by counting down the most beloved Prince albums, as decided by you!

Rather than make some rule, that will be kinda hard for the casual poster to follow, I'd say, just ride it out...Once the Grammys are over and Thriller 25 is released, it will die down. MJ Fan 1992-Forever

it's not just about the release of thriller though...its been a gradual increase over the past year. and this publicity push and possible new album could last a year out...its killing the breadth of the forum. Space for sale...

and at that point we probably wouldn't have as much need for a sticky thread to contain all the dialog people want to have about one particular artist. meanwhile, we've got multiple threads going up DAILY on MJ. i think we could stand to streamline the current reality just a little...

A lot of Prince fans get attracted to MJ, because they see things in common. Skinny black dudes. Good music. The list goes on and on. The point is, I just hate to see a rule made, when truth be told, a lot of Prince fans are also MJ fans. And if you make a rule, it might scare away some really down-to-earth MJ fans, who also dig Prince, which would suck. I realize my say probably won't matter much, seeing as I'm posting a dialog with people who are mods, but I'm still happy to put it out there. MJ Fan 1992-Forever

Strange that this is even a dillema... you know? I think it's funny... people who are into Prince almost always seem to be into MJ too. It's like opposites attract!
I guess it especially true for those of us who were around when they were both at their peak. The 80's was a magical decade musically - for me anyway. The only problem with having an MJ thread is that Madonna fans, Janet fans, Mariah fans, etc. will all want the same. But I understand... something needs to be done and personally, I would not be against such a forum for MJ, or maybe even an "Icon Forum" where all discussion of the big ones can be. |

Oh and my opinion just combine all his threads together and tell people to go there. Just in case someone didn't get the memo close the thread and direct the person to that one particular thread. Sticky it.

Now THAT is a great solution. You're right about the Prince / MJ thing- I have always found that. I actually come here mostly for the "Music- Non Prince" section; I am not a massive fan of Prince. (actually y'all will probably hate me, but I don't even own a prince CD. But I am friends with The Twinz. I do like Prince and I find him interesting.) This forum has some of the best non-prince related music discussion I have come accross. Also some of the most laid back and funny fans of any artist. I like the idea of an "Icons" forum. EDIT: To answer the question above, I am a massive MJ fan. I joined the site for the reasons above (non prince music section, The Twinz and the fans) though, quite a while ago. Then perhaps have a sticky with what artists can be considered "Icons." Cus If I see some idiot posting Justin as an icon, I will go off. MJ Fan 1992-Forever

Yeah, maybe as a rule of thumb, you gotta be in the business as a solo artist at least twenty years and an arsenol of maybe 50 million albums sold before you're considered an icon. How's that sound? |

Well I'm a big MJ fan, but yeah I have to agree that there are way too many MJ threads on this site. I don't think he should have his own forum on here though, I mean he has fan sites so I don't see the purpose really. However, if mods are seriously considering that then why just single MJ out? Because there are times when this place has NUMEROUS Janet and Madonna threads as well and that can be a bit much at times, so I was thinking maybe the mods could have a section on here dedicated to all three, but I dunno much what a good solution would be really. I've suggested before that there could be one or two threads dedicated to Michael where people can post, but I doubt that would work.
I do think Michael fans need to chill w/all the MJ threads though and stop using the non-Prince section as a Michael forum. It's getting out of hand. "And When The Groove Is Dead And Gone, You Know That Love Survives, So We Can Rock Forever" RIP MJ
"Baby, that was much too fast"...Goodnight dear sweet Prince. I'll love you always

This coming from a MJ fan. [Edited 2/8/08 21:57pm] If there was a section just for MJ stuff, then everyone will likely want a section just for sananda matraya (sp), mariah carey, amy winehouse, etc. etc. Ohh purple joy oh purple bliss oh purple rapture!
