Your 2006 Music Dream

Maybe you're already a member of your ideal band and right where you want to be musically...if so, do share and tell us how you got there.

If not, post your ideal musical situation here. What would be the character of your ideal band? What kind of music would you play? How often and where would you perform?

I'm currently reassessing and regrouping. I'm moving away from the Punk Rock Orchestra, but looking for a place to go. Here is my dream:

To play gypsy music on a regular basis with a group of people who were born with instruments in their hands. This would include me learning how to IMPROVISE. I would want to travel with this group around Eastern Europe and the Middle East playing violin in dusty cafes and around campfires. biggrin

That sounds so awesome! Reminds me of that movie "The Man Who Cried". Have you seen it? You have to. It's beautiful. Johnny Depp is in it... love2 as well as Christina Ricci, John Turturo and Cate Blanchet.Did I spell their names right? Anyway...

My dream for this year is to lead a weekly kirtan once I have enough songs I know. Then from that hopefully a band will form with regulars, because I want to invite people to play with me. I will give out cds of the chants so people will show up knowing the songs and participating in the response when I do the call. Releasing a cd would be cool... but the most important part is the performance. I will continue to work with The Temple Bhajan Band a few times a month, but I really want to get a local thing going.

I also want to work on my "regular" music... I got some things started and ready to work on once I get all my software in order. I just got a new puter. So those are my music goals for 2006, keep singing, keep learning harmonium and keep meeting more people to work with. I can't wait to record new stuff and share it with you guys.

My 2006 music dream? Releasing an album (probably gonna happen) and a few 12" records (surely will happen), do some touring to promote them (live gigs or DJ sets), having a lot of succes, groupies and money, hehe! And of course record new kickass jams. I'd also love to read some raving reviews in cool music magazines. cool

Furthermore I want to rebuild my home studio, I have bought a good soundcard and a guitar and I am currently looking for good monitor speakers. Then I am gonna freak out at home and hope to make some badass music on my own. Lord knows I have hundreds of unfinished setups for songs, hehe! wink
RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

Just to keep learning and improving.

I'd love the gypsy dream because it sounds more like an adventure than working full-time and going to school full-time.

thumbs up! to your dreams!

Anyone see the movie Latcho Drom about gypsy music? That movie became my fantasy for life. It shows all these incredible musicians who live music as a lifestyle from birth. A lot of them play fiddle and the thing that blew me away was their extremely poor "technique" and strange ways of playing/holding the instrument -- like they invented their own technique. But the playing is INCREDIBLE, because they do it every day and their heart and suffering is all inside it. Which taught me a lot after coming out of the classical tradition which is so confining in some ways and you can really lose what soul there is by trying to master technique all the time.

It sounds a little like "Vengo" which was a story with an average plot but featured real gypsy musicians and is amazing. Latcho Drom seems to only be avaiable on VHS but I've got to check that out, thanks.

Vengo was made by the same director. I've got to see that!!! Latcho Drom is really inspiring. There's also a CD of the soundtrack, but it's most interesting to watch how they play.

Oh you know mine - I'm there. It only took 20 years playing and writing and recording, and then 4 months back in the studio, and then, or, now, playing to awesomely empty bars! Yeah!!

I'm a legend!

Honestly, my dream is and will always be to play to 500+ people, to play my song where the whole crowd knows the words. That's all. I don't need to take over the world or have a platinum record... just a medium-sized hall screaming "Oh! Oh! Oh!" or "L.O.V.I.N.!!"

I'm getting there. One person at a time. It could happen this year. If it does, I'll tell you all about it.

yes That's the idea. And like VinaBlue's great dream, it helps to be as specific as possible. Visualize, hear, and paint your dream in your mind with all the details!!!

By the way, does anyone think my dream could come true? It seems so way out there. I don't know how I could afford to spend an extended time travelling around the world like a gypsy or even figure out how to meet up with the people I want meet up with.

I want to "study" with people who live and breathe music as part of their essence and culture. Not some school... But people who play from their hearts to survive living on this planet. I'm such a romantic. biggrin

But I'm also trying to identify what I want to do more locally. What kind of group I want to play with, what of music...it's all so hazy because I have to transition out years of indoctrination and discipline. shake

My New Year's resolutions in music are to write and record 6 original songs, improve my guitar playing, and complete a vocal training course.

If I get the chance to join a band, I'll take it.

It's my experience that by keeping this mindset the pieces will fall into place. Try to get in touch with any of the Vengo people, that's where I'd start and come back here when you find a cyber cafe somewhere and let us know how the cultural woodshedding is going.

Puff Puff Pass.
V...freakin' brilliant. Now this is something that could REALLY ignite. We all know how everyone...EVERYONE enjoys participating in music...even IF they only shake a tamborine (that would be me btw). Endless possibilities. The blending of hundreds of people...no...no thousands of people, together, out on a desert or better yet, all over the world at various power points (the pyramids!) all playing and chanting. Damn it...we’d be RAISING THE VIBRATION. ~ sigh ~. Good Dream with Real Possibility. Make it happen V.

Heartbeat: U like Tango? Romantic, most passionate, very gypsy, very VIOLIN. Playing diffrent milonga’s every night. There’s a huge uprising of Tango right now. One of the best sites I know http://totango.net/ttindex.html

Funkboy: I ain’t gettin any younger...butchuknow I’m your groupie smile

Mine, well they're pretty tangible right now. I just want to meet someone with a car that will take me to the city for canvas and paint. I need to paint more forest. I’ve become connected to trees and water...and arches for some reason. Guess that would be pathways thru dense woods, stopping to ponder... among secret clearings and magical waters.

And I want to go shopping with Yamom and Frank. I want so much to update my sound system and hook up the toys that will allow me to more easily program and interact with the music, the sound and the computer. I want what I want at my fingertips.

Right on Slave.

Here's an odd one - two nights ago a southern rock guy asked me for a CD of demos - they're interested in doing a Beau song on their next CD.

But what is southern rock?

Southern Rock - it's a combination of blues rock, 70's bell-bottom rock, combined with slide guitars, major chords, organs and pianos, long hair and sticking it to the man. Most Southern Rock bands originate from the southeastern US, like Georgia, Alabama, Florida.

There's a thin line between Southern Rock and Country Rock. Most southern rockers wear cowboy hats, but very few Country Rockers smoke weed like it's oxygen. Southern Rock lyrics usually talk about having lots of bad fun, riding harleys and drinkin' lots.

Artist found in this category:
The originals:
- Lynyrd Skynyrd (pretty much the Founding Fathers of Southern Rock).
- Allman Brothers (Blues Rock merged with Jamband Rock)
- 38 Special (Southern Rock all the way)
- Atlanta Rhythm Section

and TONS more.

More recently,
- Black Crowes
- 3 Doors Down
- Bo Bice

ZZ Top? Anyway, I think one of the greatest experiences is when someone takes your work and makes it their own. I worked on a peace project once that was about artistic collaboration. It was actually between Israelis and Palestinians where they would make art and then exchange the artwork and then work on it themselves, and back and forth. What an amazing and excellent way to make peace. Talk about a dream!

If it looks like me, then it will be a bunch of middle-aged white guys. I'd like to spice it up with some go-go dancers, but I'm not sure my wife would vote for that, and she seems to win all the elections we hold!

Seriously, I wouldn't care who was in it as long as we played a healthy does of Prince, Springsteen and 60's garage rock.

It's interesting to think that Prince had a dream -- which was to play in a band that included black and white members, women and men.
