FunkMusician.com - NOW with Podcast!

Well. It's on the way.

I've got the mp3 posted to the site, and I'm still learning about the whole technology of the podcast. I submitted the thing to itunes, but I still don't know about how to set up links on other sites and stuff. I'll figure it out tomorrow, when I'm awake.

I'm going for simplicity on the site right now. So, there's two old articles, and the podcast.

Check it out, tell me what you think. Pleez?

Last I was looking into this, there is a tag in the link to the xml file that opens itunes.

I'll see if I can find that.

Very cool. You sound genuinely enthusiastic about your subject which is always a plus when you're trying to teach something! The way you described what was happening rhythmically was very easy to grasp.

Some random ideas:

You have to do a lesson on the wah-wah pedal or it isn't funkmusician.com! 'Shaft' style chucks and whathaveyou. How you can accent certain beats or emphasise phrases by rocking the pedal to the floor at the right time.

Liked the way you talked about the interaction between guitar and drums. Howzabout the interaction between bass and drums or guitar, bass and drums all together? What beats they usually hit on in your stereotypical funk song - ie. where one might stop and another start (the 'spaces' you were talking about) or cases where they might play in unison. Err... kind of rambling now... enough. smile

Guitar lesson with the Kracka! WTF? This is really cool especially with your little stories added in as to why you're doing what you're doing. Could you do an hour though? Could you charge for this?

The mp3 files of the podcast live on my server, so an hour mp3 would have to be phonecall-quality lo-fi, or I'd go broke. And besides, I'd rather keep them to less than 10 minutes each. That way, I'm more inclined to keep doing more of them. It took me two hours to put together those 6 minutes! Crazy hunh? That doesn't even consider the time it took to think about how to present the info, etc.

Thanks for the ideas about future podcasts - definitely will involve all of those ideas. Right now I'm trying to keep it remedial and simple. As soon as I throw in a wah pedal, it's another doodad people will have to HAVE for it to be a useful lesson... but at the same time, it might illuminate the pedal and get a lot more people to go buy one. (HELLLOOOO ENDORSEMENT DEAL).

The next podcast will be a reprise of the original funkmusician article about chords and patterns. From there, I'll move over to bass for a few, and THEN get into the interplay between the different instruments.

And THEN get into the bandleading aspect - calling stops, hits, etc. All during this, I'll be using music. I'll post some of the future topics, and if you've got a song that illustrates it, maybe I can use YOUR song instead of making the show a vehicle for my CD.

Also, I plan to interview the drummer that played on my CD. The dude is a master of just listening while playing. Something that is amazingly vacant from a lot of players.

Thanks for the feedback y'all.

I found it on iTunes! I'm subcribed. How cool!

Beau, this is a great thing you are doing. This will serve the purpose of passing on the funk to a new generation of funksters. Keep up the good work. You are good at teaching. This might be your true niche.

Are there any music retail websites that have affiliate programs? You could stick links to the gear used or mentioned in the podcast under the posts on the website. Maybe even links to CDs on Amazon that illustrate points you made in the lesson. May make you a little pocket money or nothing at all... just chucking ideas out there.

On the subject of wah pedals - got myself an Ibanez Weeping Demon at the end of last year. Used to have a Dunlop Cry Baby, but I'm loving the Ibanez! Every parameter is tweakable and you can get some interesting filter effects out of it as well as your standard wah sounds. Can be used on bass too.
