I don't know how he does it. We were so ready for a secret show this tour. Every other night he's been in Melbourne I've scoped out Bennett's. He just knows how to catch us with our...slippers on, lol!

Something in the water (does not compute)
Love 2 The 9's
Tamborine
An Honest Man
Prince on drums (solo)
Strange relationship
Brown Skin
What have you done for me lately
Sexy
Rude boy
If i wa your girlfriend
Oustanding (gap band)
Don't stop till you get enough
Prince on piano
Jazzy Set (Charlie Parker & Miles Davis)

Sorry, but there's a fair few problems with that setlist.

He definitely did not sing Love 2 the 9's - I don't remember it at all (and I love that song!) but someone else heard him play the start of it on keys. I must have just been lost in the music. It definitely wasn't even close to the whole song and there weren't any vocals.

Tamborine was a briefish instrumental, mainly showcasing John on drums. Someone was saying he sang the first verse - he didn't. He was sitting two seats away from me when he called it out to John - I'd remember if he'd started singing, "What's it like inside your tambourine". This I know.

I don't remember hearing An Honest Man, but I don't know the instrumental as well, so it might have been in there. He didn't sing it. Cassy was at a baby grand, playing beautifully and a few times at the start he just sat in the audience and asked her to play - he was visibly loving listening to her play. She played a lot of Venus De Milo, amongst other things I wouldn't be confident to name. She also threw in some scat singing and improvised lyrics. Magic.

Prince jammed on drums with Ida on bass (as opposed to solo). Earlier he'd jammed on bass with John on drums - including "777-9311".

Elisa was singing before Prince arrived - I can't remember what she sang (was just arriving myself) but she sounded fabulous. With John and Ida doing their thing and Cassy at a proper piano, it was a true jazz setup, which Elisa is really well suited to.

Elisa then handed the mic to Liv, who sang Erykah Badu's "On & On" - she was on fire! Prince arrived while she was singing and jumped up on stage, indicating to her to keep going. He picked up the guitar and started playing, before throwing a solo in. Brilliant!

At one point, Liv and Elisa also sang Lost & Found, which is ironic, because, judging from the flurry of excitement around me (and glances from the girls on stage), Shelby was indeed lost and nowhere to be found. It was ok though - they did a stellar job, before Shelby finally appeared and absolutely killed Brown Skin. Don't be fooled by such a setlist staple - it doesn't reflect the jamming that happened around it, including another awesome guitar solo.

I assume Sexy is meant to me "Le Freak/Sexy Dancer".

I'm sure there's some other stuff - it was part secret gig, part rehearsal, part late-night jam session - everything was very cruisy and one thing rolled into another.

I'll post if I think of any more. Feel free to correct me (if you were there). I'm the first to admit that setlist recollection is not usually my forte, but felt I had to jump in on this one.

It seems it was mainly for those who were already at the club - anyone that had been there for the act earlier that evening got to stay, so they effectively saw the show for free.

Everyone else paid $200, but word is the money went to charity.

Phew....I'm so glad I missed that aftershow!

I hear the some of the seats at Bennets Lane are a not very comfortable and a friend of a friend of mine told me that his cousin bought a bag of peanuts from the bar there and they were two days past their used-by date. I mean, I'm a big Prince fan, but you've got to draw the line somewhere.....I just feel sorry for those that did attend.

Sounds nice and all but I said it before....Monday nights is Qanda night. Big show last night Barry Humphries and Miriam Margolyes.

$200 eh? Look, I don't want to get a bit negative here, but at those prices he can keep his secret gigs.

EDIT: ok I just read the post above about the money apparently going to a charity. Fair enough.

It really was!!

It was also like a scene out of "28 days later" or something. I live around the corner from Bennett's Lane, so I just had to throw shoes on, grab my bag and run, which is exactly what I did. The lane itself is tiny, off another small one way street, that bridges between two major CBD streets. It was 1am and as I ran down one of the big streets, I saw others running full pelt down an otherwise empty little street.

A lone taxi screeched to a halt at the entrance of the one way street and a couple leapt out and hit the ground running, hand in hand.

From the other end, I could see more people running towards this tiny little lane, amidst an otherwise eerily quiet backdrop.

Stressful, but really fun! Adreneline was pumping!

I may be wrong but I think it's the venue that cashes in on those prices... The average for the other small shows has been $100 so I don't think Prince is responsible for hiking up the prices. It's the opportunists.

That kind of contradicts the other posts that have said the money was going to charity.

Regardless, Prince def wasn't making any money on this lil gig.

Even if he did take the entire $200 from each of the couple of dozen door sales, the cost of his band and crew for the night would far exceed any money that came in. He was doin it for the love of it and that's pretty cool.

Music, sweet music, I wish I could caress and...kiss, kiss...

Missed another aftershow type gig yet again, but for $200.....some questions have to be asked about the steep price tag to gain entry if you were not there at the start of the evening. I think $100 is reasonable enough, but the proceeds are going to a charity, which one is it? Just wondering how much it is going to cost if there is a show after the Wednesday concert. I think somebody decided to cash in on an opportunity. I hope there is an aftershow on Wednesday and i get to go (have to take Thursday off i think), Prince decides to play 'Electric Chair'. That would be cool. Funny thing, all the aftershows so far in OzLand have either been after a Fri/Sat show, not a midweek one.

Well, if the proceeds did go to a charity, that's great, well done to all. A bit of notice on this site would've been nice. Better there than that Club23 place at the casino with Shane 'Backstreet Boys' Warne.

I only checked Twitter this morning, so found out then.

Am impressed by those who can check Twitter in their sleep, not a skill I am likely to develop.

The only people who get to see all of Prince's live sets are in the entourage, band or techies. Don't think I could get any of those jobs so will have to speak to Prince's doctor about having a locating device surgically implanted into him so can see where he is. It would also be good if it could indicate his proximity to a guitar/bass/keyboard/drum set so I can know if music is about to be produced.

Yep becoming a stalker is the only way.

Hmmmm, sounds very dignified.....must be a southern thing wink

Of course up here we'd be like.....Yeah what's that prince? A secret gig? What, right now, you say? Oh Ok....but hang on, alright. cool

But back to reality.....Yeah what Miles and Parker did he do? Has he been learning to play trumpet and sax inbetween gigs or was Eric Leeds and Atlanta Bliss there too?
