What a night! What a weekend!

I can't believe the folk earlier in this thread complaining it was only for the rich folk. Tickets were $75 or $100. Much cheaper than the full show.

I'm genuinely sorry for those who missed out but just because you missed out doesn't make folks who didn't snobs. It's just the nature of a small show. I heard a rumour through a freind, jumped online and bought two tickets. I was one of the lucky, not one of the elitists. And trust me, after this weekend, I'm flat broke.

And one more thing, Seal was kind of embarrasing after a while.

And that was a VOX Series 55 guitar and now i want one.

Why was Seal embarrassing? Because he sounds awful live?
pray Peace in the House of Prince.

here's some actual footage http://yfrog.com/2c6boez

it's of princes snatching and throwing away someones phone. awwwww so cute!

[Edited 5/12/12 19:43pm]

I'm pretty sure that was a security guard holding the phone that p took & threw backwards off stage to where the entourage sitting.
The security guys were pretty good at interrupting people who were recording w their phone cameras.
I took the incident in the vid clip above to b that the security guy had the phone of someone in the entourage (sitting behind the speakers & dj table to the right of the stage-it was clear that was where they were). And I thing that explains the happy bemused smile on p's face (which was different to what I'm about to describe.)
I saw p makes faces at other people in the crowd when they were trying to take pics of him. I swear one face was " why do u want to fill ur head with 1s & 0s. "
Sometimes he was more caught up in the solo he was doing & not making faces.
I think that while trying to take a pic one is more worried about visual than audio , but we are supposed to b there to listen to his creation, so the ultimate offense is not paying attention - clearly manifest among those sticking cameras in his face.
As mentioned in another post I made, the people in the front row who would turn their back on p during a solo , trying to get a shot of themselves w p behind them was pretty disrespectful from my point of view & I'm not surprised he finished up the song & left.

Just had a revelation on the "1s & 0s" business. I have been listening to digital music for 20+ yrs.
Why does a piece of music sound much better live than on a cd? ( when performed well). ( eg u see a band , think they are great , buy the respective album , and it's just not quite the same).
Because u don't just listen w ur ears. U feel it. See water move & resonate w the music. Guess live music must be more powerful because of something to do with this. Like hearing a string quarter in an old church and u get goose pimples. But not so much if listen to same piece via cd or digital media.
Will have to think more about this. Wonder if this is connected to p's statement about 1s & 0s? Or w how p continues to circle the planet so we can hear him perform live. We can't all go to him in the funky land (mineapolis) so he brings the food for the soul to those who hunger . ( yes I realize some portion of all live shows will be digitized , but the music on a cd/ mp3 is compressed. Whereas live we will be able to hear & feel more).

I got in!!!! Eventually found another guy leaving & asked if since he was leaving I could have his wristband so I could get in, he took it off I stuck it back together with chewing gum (!) and BOOM walked through security straight into the ballroom!!! What a crazy night... A bunch of fans without tickets all did this same trick & I met some really great people and got their numbers. We all managed to sneak in eventually so in all we only ended up paying the $20 ivy entrance charge!! What a night I will never forget.. I didn't get home until nearly 6am! So many people there filming w phones n cameras so there should be plenty of footage around.. [Edited 5/12/12 18:32pm]

Nice story!

Thanks to twitter W2Austrailia who tweeted every song title to us and news update until his battery was at 5%. It was fun!! Though I can imagine the photos in Prince's face weren't enjoyable. They should confiscate phones at the door/garderobe but then have one professsional film stuff. That way everyone's happy. cool

Dang cool version of "I Could Never..."

Folks, you probably have no clue who I am but I have been criticizing Prince's live show since 2009. (it all went downhill for me after the amazing Conga Room show) but... I'm really really digging this latest run of shows. Incredibly cool and he's doing a good job of mixing the hits with the rarities.

It's just my opinion but it felt like he was a: very stoned and b: trying hard to be the star of the show. It felt like he was invitied up to sing one song, but then just wouldn't let go of the mic, and was trying to impress prince with his knowledge of prince songs by quoting alphabet st, the ballad of dorothy parker, sing'o'the times... But the worst was he would keep sneaking in 'can i get a kiss from a rose' as if to try and say, "see folks, i've had a hit too". Mostly, he was really stoned . I saw him around the venue before the show and from experience, i could tell.

I know you Gohi (as in, from around the org) and I'm so glad you get it.

A lot don't seem to be seeing the differences in this tour, but the shift from LA last year (I saw 5 shows over there) and this year is really substantial.

Now I did absolutely love the shows last year, but I understand why a lot of people were tired of the format, etc...

But this tour has kicked off with one heck of a weekend!

Saturday night in particular was awesome. The main show, the aftershow...simply awesome. The energy is different, the setlists are great (and appropriate to the crowds) and we are just LOVING it down here!! excited

From the other thread....

Chiquetet said:

The aftershow was incredible.

The band members came on slowly as DJ Rashida continued doing her thing, and they were each spending a lot of time getting the sound right - it seemed to be a soundcheck of sorts and I think there were problems getting the balance right. I thought it was cool to see John drumming over the top of some of the tracks, or Ida throwing some bass in. Hearing Prince's voice as he intro'd the band from off stage built the excitement.

Shelby and the other girls kept the crowd hyped while techs ran around, signalling to sound guys and trying to get everything sorted. I heard that the venue doesn't normally have live gigs.

Of course none of that build-up is going to work properly on a recording and IMO should probably even be taken out.

Admittedly, yes, we were well and truly ready for things to be kicked up a notch once Prince appeared, but we were also having a great time in amongst it all. I can imagine that sitting on your couch listening to a recording, the chants and hype would drive you mad - but that's not what it's for.

ICNTTPOYM was extraordinary. The whole night was an absolute buzz.

The group I went with (most of which had never seen Shelby live, only on recordings) are all converts now. She and the other girls worked bloody hard that night to keep the energy up and had a lot of fun with us in the process.

Sorry to those that missed out, but nothing beats the live experience.

Yeah, totally different live. I have heard alot of Shelby on some recordings and she was very vocal on Saturday night too. But it was totally different live.

The gig was incredible. On paper it reads differently - looking through the setlist.

What you dont see on a boot.........Everyone worked their butts off. What i loved about the show was that it felt real loose. At one point Prince yelled out from the side to start another track that had the rest of the band confused as to what to play.

Prince just seemed so relaxed and laidback. At one point at the beginning when John was drumming to a track DJ Rashida was spinning, Prince walked on stage with his slippers, grabbed the bass and started jamming with John for a while.

Another moment was when Prince instructed John Blackwell to play a drum rhythm - cant remember the track they played then.....was just done on the fly.

Loved watching Prince just stoll on stage and jump on Cassandra's boards and bang out a funky keys riff.

He really tested that new guitar on the IWNTTPOUM and SAIMH and Dreamer. YOu can see his face during the solos and especially when those phones were right in his face.

Another moment was at the end of Dreamer as Prince left the guitar playing that last chord, he walked off levaing it on the floor. The techie came over to unplug the guitar and Morris stopped him from unplugging it (it was still playing) and grabbed a towel and put out the "flames" so to speak. So, cool, then Morris struts off the stage leaving the geeky techie like a fool - poor bloke was just doing his job in front of all these Prince freaks.

You dont see any of this on a boot.....but unfortunately, boots is all we got sometimes.
