Did Prince actually sing? He doesn't look too happy on the pictures.

^Actually come to think of it, he didn't sing much at all. But he was still very much the 'front man', at least in the second hour. Mind blowing guitar and bass stuff.

Whilst the DJ was spinning the discs, Prince would sometimes sing along or other members would from behind the stage.

For example on Hot Thing, we would echo the lines of the songs in the gaps between the lines....sounded great.

The DJ gig then segued directly into Sexy Dancer live and it went from there with the ladies of the NPG front and centre initially, and Prince taking Ida's bass for a bit....and then later Prince was indeed front man, with the usual amount of singing for an aftershow, but some really choppy rhythmic guitar and some really reallly loud soloing....

It was off the hook.

I'd say he was in as good a mood as I've seen him at any aftershow....it flowed really well and he could do the switches between playing to support others and taking centre stage...

I got in!!!! Like most of us I had no ticket but just raced over from Allphones Arena and showed up anyway to try my luck. There were a other fans there like me trying to work out how to get in. Was nearly gonna give up when I could hear the music started. Anyway what hurt even more was a lot of people being let in didnt even look like prince fans.. And whats more some of them started to LEAVE after a while!!! How friggin stoopid is that??

I asked them is prince on and they said no it's just his band playing He's not even singing or saying anything just sitting in a corner playing?!? One woman even said disgustedly "he's an arrogant prick!" I was gonna remind her the dude just played a 2.5 hr show of his own and why didn't she go to that but didn't waste my time. Eventually found another guy leaving & asked if since he was leaving I could have his wristband so I could get in, he took it off I stuck it back together with chewing gum (!) and BOOM walked through security straight into the ballroom!!! What a crazy night... A bunch of fans without tickets all did this same trick & I met some really great people and got their numbers. We all managed to sneak in eventually so in all we only ended up paying the $20 ivy entrance charge!!

What a night I will never forget.. I didn't get home until nearly 6am! So many people there filming w phones n cameras so there should be plenty of footage
around..

This will be my last post on the Org...my Prince life is now complete.

My head is still spinning, my ears are still ringing, and my mind has been completely blown!!
So, where to start?
All day yesterday, I kept an eye on my twitter feed, and sent a few pleading tweets to DJRashida, friendly, not creepy, just asked a couple of times if there was any way, any way at all, that I could still get a ticket to the after show. We are at the concourse bar under the Opera House, having a drink, watching the harbour, on a lovely Sydney afternoon.
Just as we get up to leave, I checked my phone - tweet from Rashida, "send me your full names and I will get you on the guest list"!!!!! I just about wet my pants right there and then. Could it possibly be true?? Could this actually be true?!
So then we went to dinner, had a drink, I was barely holding it together, and at 11pm we went to the venue, the Ivy Ballroom in the city. Huge venue, lots of levels, bars, queues, bouncers everywhere. Where do we stand? Where do we go? Nervous as hell!
So I decide to just ask a bouncer. He takes us forward, past about 200 people in a queue (to get into another bar as it turns out) and we climb a flight of stairs to where a desk is set up.
My heart is totally in my mouth at this point! Fuck! Could this actually work out!? Could I actually be about to get into this private fucking Prince party?
So the woman flips through some papers, takes a few seconds, feels like hours, and suddenly, yep, there it is, an email from Rashida, with our names on her list. Within seconds we get wristbands, and are ushered in..."have a great night!" they say....
Holy fucking hell!! It happened!
We climb some more stairs, and coming down the stairs there is DJRashida. I call out, she turns, and I say, "hi, it's me, thanks so much for getting us in..." she seems really pleased that we made it, "enjoy yourself" she says.....and she is gone.
The room is about half the size of the Fly! ( flybynight club - Fremantle) A small stage, bathed in purple light, and a long bar.
Staff are really really friendly, and everyone seems psyched to know what is about to unfold.
We wait, and dance a bit, and wait some more, the place fills, and fills and I am so glad we got there early because down at the desk there seems to an absolutely frenzy of people trying to get in. And then...at 1am, the lights dim a bit more and the NPG is suddenly there, jamming on stage, Shelby, and the other ladies singing up a storm, don't really know the song, but it is funky, really funky. Prince is there, on a mic, behind the speaker, being coy, but occasionally calling out, psyching the crowd up, building the hype....and then there he is, with his guitar...the crowd goes fucking wild...I am about 6 people back, and I can see everything....thank god I am tall.....
He jams, and plays his guitar like I have never seen, jumping in and out of songs, then plays a full version of, "I can never take the place of your man....." and I just about pass out! It's Prince, its the NPG, he's just there, and he is shredding up his guitar like fucking funk GOD!!!
The show goes on and on, and I dance and dance and dance, like a madman. The crowd around me kind of parts to give me space, i am 6foot5 and it is obvious that I gotta dance, and people give me room..a couple of guys come up and say, "you look like you are having a fuckin awesome time, go for it buddy" ....yep, I am having the time of my life, and I am cutting loose.
Prince plays an amazing version of , "she's always in my hair" a song I have had on hi repeat, walking to and from work for the past month...I can't believe it could get any more incredible.....and then...fuckin Flava Flav from Public Enemy is on stage, and they bust out 911...tool cool.
It seems like hours, and it seems like seconds, but it's 4am, and they are gone....and DJRashida is spinning some more tracks...
I and we stumble down the stairs, into a cab, and by 4:30 I am in bed, trying to sleep...no chance...
It was amazing, awesome, incredible...the Jam of the year

Cheers

How can this be your last post? What if you are destined to go to yet another intimate aftershow that will blow your mind even more? lol

Thanks so much for this - I'm halfway around the world from you and really loving the stories! So glad you all had a great time! And how nice of Rashida - I'm sure P gave her the latitude to let some people in.

i posted this under "aftershows" straight Afterjam at ivy. (sorry -should have posted it here. )
Do not think prince intended to perform.
That was not his guitar ( & he was not happy with it as it would go out of tune & he re-tuned as he played)
Think it was intended to just b npg performing.
After 1 hr of dj rashida
Then 40 mins of npg w girls singing crowd chanted 4 prince.
He came on reluctantly I think using I think the bass girl edith's guitar

Think it was intended as post gig cool down.
Looked to me at one pt that prince told whole band to get up and leave.
Ivy people encouraged crowd to chant prince.
Think seal helped smooth it over by singing some prince lyrics over slow grooves.
Prince the consummate professional played some unbelievable ripping guitar solos.
Could see ivy guy looking with much thanks at seal for smoothing it over.
Think ivy would have been in big crapper w audience if no prince.
If it was supposed to be no prince , then in aust I think we'd want to know that prince's band the npg was performing and that prince would be in the house but chilling , not performing.
But cos it was described as Prince + Npg the I think it was fair for us Aussies to expect him to perform
Place was full of ivy only people who had not been to concert, & did not know the other songs played - India arie , gill Scott.
Don't think they recognized public enemy guy.
Fortunately they did recognize & respond to seal.
For me to be a few people from the front & see p perform incredible g solos was something I'll never forget & I feel truly priveledged to have witnessed it.
( I missed the basement one 10 yrs ago cos being a keen fan I had bought tix to the 1st show)
Thank you prince for stepping up & filling void.
Hearing that u prepare for a tour by jamming each song for 20 mins means that I guess your band is always ready to do anything.
Before attending the afterjam my assumption was that the stadium would have the hits , while the aftershow would be songs from your latest or last few albums. A chance for something intimate with those who follow u closely.
( I know p doesn't read these but can't help but put it that way).
Also think the non-prince fan types up the front who kept turning w their back towards prince , so the person could take a pic with p behind them , did not help.
(ie could see p was pissed off each time someone pulled out their camera/ phone. )

Of course I could have this all wrong.
Shelby kept saying ready to party to dawn. It is possible that they had planned a few hrs of npg only, then p later.
But I doubt it as I really do not think that was p's guitar.
It looked more like that because he is so incredibly gifted he can rip an amazing sound out of anything.
Also better say that each member of the band , bass player especially , performed to very high levels. I honestly say this.
Loved it all.
Guess I'd have to check the story next time b4 getting excited about aftershow.
In relation to the stadium gig sat 12 may think we were v lucky and had fantastic performce. One review for fri night panned the use of an acoustic g for purple rain , so we were lucky and p played electric tonight.
Incredible performance.
If we were in US/Europe & had had many chances to see the usual version of purple rain we might be more open to variations.
Ideally one would have seen each tour after each album to see each song performed live w bridge & solo.
Kind of wish he would be like roger waters and take each albums tour on the road
Or release each year a bluray of a live performance of songs from each album so we comprehend and witness how much went into each song for each album.
Wishful thinking I know.
Will just be greatful I was able to hear the music & and also able to hear it performed live.

I got in!

What a night! What a weekend!

I can't believe the folk earlier in this thread complaining it was only for the rich folk. Tickets were $75 or $100. Much cheaper than the full show.

I'm genuinely sorry for those who missed out but just because you missed out doesn't make folks who didn't snobs. It's just the nature of a small show. I heard a rumour through a freind, jumped online and bought two tickets. I was one of the lucky, not one of the elitists. And trust me, after this weekend, I'm flat broke.

And one more thing, Seal was kind of embarrasing after a while.

And that was a VOX Series 55 guitar and now i want one.

may display symptoms of sarcasm
