Fans that didn't see him live before?

They are what amount of the audience?

25%?

10%?

So the rest know him better or well or are hardcore.

So why all the 25-year old stuff?

Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

Exactly. Things like that make me feel that a lot of people here in the org really haven't followed Prince that long, forget very quickly, or just don't pay attention to things like that. Prince has been so adamant, for over a decade, about his disdain for playing "hits" and now, all of sudden, nobody remembers? If the FANS didn't demand to hear the Purple Rains, Raspberry Berets, Kisses, and Let's Go Crazies, Prince would dismiss those songs . . . FOREVER. Let me know when someone wakes up in this thread; meantime, I'll visit another.

i'll give u another: prior 2 the rave un2 the joy 2000 pay per view, he was on the early morning show with bryant gumble saying he would never do 1999 again because there was no need 2 do the song ..then during his stint in london in 2007 ..don't worry i won't hurt u ...

now b4 anyone says this, yes prince can do whatever he wants cause it's his music not ours, but come on its time 2 wake up and say there is other music besides this from him

True again, I mean every single year, Prince has inferred one way or another, that he's "committed" to his new music . . . and keeping it new. I didn't know what to fully expect during the 21 Night Stand, but I had a very good idea since I saw the Oakland shows. I visualized how the audience would respond if he did "Everlasting Now" (not because of when it was released, but what he says in the song) as an encore, and performed the majority of Planet Earth (which happens to be an excellent CD). But no matter what the "hardcore" fans (sure they are) say, I SEE who sits down during his shows . . . and who stands up. Every time I go to a Prince concert, I try to encourage people to explore his new music, but it's a daunting task.

What would YOU do? You perform a song, everyone sits down. You perform a song, everyone jumps up, starts screaming, and dancing. I know what I WOULD DO. party

And THEN . . . people have the nerve to say he doesn't care what the fans want to hear.

Earth to the org, Earth to the org: If it wasn't for the majority of Prince fans being stuck in the 1980's, his shows would be much different.

he's 52 about to be 53 and yet his "fans" are saying "act like u did when u were 25/26 years old when u wrote these songs cause we don't want u 2 grow up let us relive our youth through u don't sing songs about where u are now in life but when u were reckless and sex crazed"

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

having gone 2 the four shows in NY i saw the same thing as u did with only a few us losing our minds when he started doing dreamer or hell when he did uptown not a whole lot stood up but as soon as raspberry beret came on ..oh how they stood up.

the other arguement i see over and over again during this discussion is "well he can't do a arena show with him just doing songs from his current material." well this is both true and false. some artists are contractually obligated 2 do "hits" in order 4 the promoter a return on their investement (slave) but then the artist can choose 2 do the other parts of their show releasing their creative output as they see fit (freedom is a beautiful thing).

or would it be best if prince just stuck 2 smaller venues ala the one night alone tour and play 2 his hearts content. i will not see prince in a arena venue ever again my choice, but not because i don't like his music, it's more of i don't like seeing prince pigeon hold by his "fans". i have sat down when the hits have been played during this recent voyage and only getting up when it's been non hit songs 2 prove a point 2 some around me that if it wasn't for that other music that made u really see a genius at his craft then what would u know of him?

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

I felt he did play diverse and interesting setlists and changed the mood and guests up enough. I felt like he put enough originality on it that casual and hardcore fans heard things they hadn't heard before from him and I felt he did the small venues to be a little more relaxed and give the hardcores some intimacy and less hits. I felt like he was out to please everybody and amazingly I think he did. Even the ones who have a problem with it say they loved it.

If he has/had a motive, i.e., to save the Forum, then he put that cause ahead of his own and he shoud be commended. If that is/was his motive, then the "hits" would make the most sense. This run felt like it had purpose. No matter what he was feeling he showed nothing but joy and stellar showmanship in his performances. In the past I felt like his moods and needs came first & this time I really felt like he put the audience first and foremost & truly wanted everyone to have a good time. I felt that he has accepted the "hits" and gave the majority what they wanted and may be helping a cause in the process by doing the arenas. I felt a renewed purposeful Prince, not necessarily a different Prince.

I'm like you. I want the obscure. I'm over Purple Rain but did it touch me when I didn't expect it too? Yes. Am I over some of the other hits? Yes for sure. Could I stop myself from spending as much time with him as possible in this run, could I stop myself even when maybe I shouldn't have gone (other obligations) could I stop myself from being in awe of him every night I saw him? Did I dance my ass off to Inglewood Swinging on 5/14 (which I like BTW anyway) because he brought the funk so unexpectedly hardcore even though I was gonna take a bathroom break? Hells to the NO. He brought it no matter what anyone says and I can't be mad at him for that. It'd be different if he was just phoning it in. Then I would probably have a problem with it all.

If his motive is just to pay bills then what? He shouldn't have spent his money, he shouldn't capitalize on his popularity to make $ again? He should have shut up in the past more than he did in interviews and never say never?

And if he doesn't have a motive like those then what? He's lazy? He's lost his creativity? Then why not just open up shop in Las Vegas? (Not saying those performers are lazy, I know those shows take their toll.)

I think when Prince is older he will play whatever he wants and not give a damn. Come see him or don't. But this is a "come see me" tour. I said in an earlier post, I feel like he decided to spend time with "everyday people" that have been devoted for years.

This is all IMHO. I know I have no idea what Prince is thinking though I think I do. Please don't take any of my opinons personally.

And like MLava I like the casual fans. I like their reactions. And like TheResistor a new friend of mine was a first timer and has become a hardcore.

The good Prince has done with this 21 Nite Stand far outweigh any disgruntledness, IMHO.

Did I mention he is not playing for you!!!!!

WOW! I exoected more from people here. This was the most immature and idiotic response I have ever seen and you should be proud of your massive intelligence. As I said (and this is the LAST time I defend my statement), I WISHED he would have a show (within the 21 shows) for the hardcore/real fans and not the radio fans. I also said that I was thankful and excited to see him. I would have liked to have seen a show for hardcore fans and not this "greatest hits, ulta-repetitive" show.

I thank you for yelling but you intelligence and shouting just show me how dumb and immature you really are. Learn the difference between attacks and criticism please or grow up. Thank you and have a nice day.

There are more people who thought the concerts rocked than thought otherwise.

I wonder how many of you only watch a movie once?

An Open Letter to Prince:

Dear Sir,

I have been a fan of yours since 1981 when a friend let me borrow the Controversy cassette tape. Even though I was 9 years old and my parents wouldn't let me listen to it, I somehow sneaked it into the house and put in whatever tape deck I could find and listen to that great music for hours. It was at that point you had me hooked. And, subsequently, I have been an arden supporter of yours by buying every album you have ever produced, defending you to so many people when you went through you name change and lack of commercial success as well as buying your concert tickets whenver you would tour or come to the area in which I have lived. In short, I have chosen to support all of your ventures and believe in your musical prowess and genius.

When I heard you were coming to LA for 21 Night I was excited to have the opportunity to see the greatest living musician; an icon. Never before had I been given an opportunity to see your talents in a smaller venue for such a long period of time. So, when tickets went on sale I made it a point to snatch up as many as I could afford and see as mnay shows as possible with the hopes of hearing some of greatest music that was an intregal part of my life. But, as I went to show after show at The Forum or Troubadour I became incressingly frustrated at the reality of hearing the same songs over and over and over again. Herein lies my issue with these concerts...

For once, I would like to see a real concert for REAL fans. Why can't you provide a concert for the people who have folowed you for (now) 30 years. I don't know how many times I have heard 1999, Little Red Corvette, Kiss, Alphabet Street, Take Me With U, Shhh, Let's Go Crazy and Purple Rain. Why do you have to make a concert for the "Radio" fans and not for the REAL fans. I know I cannot be alone in thinking this way. Why can't you perform a set that rewards the loyal, loyal followers who have helped to share the word about your music and performances with a concert that showcases your incredible catalog. For once, I would love to see a concert where you perform for the REAL fans with such greats as Thunder, Party Up, Condition of the Heart, America, Private Joy, Dorothy Parker, Eye Know, Partyman, 17 Days, Let's Pretend We're Married, and ANYTHING off the Gold Experience (minus Endorphine Machine or Shhh). This is not a wish list but an attempt to hear something... anything different.

I seems like the last 10 years of touring have been a "greatest hits' show and I would hope you would consider performing the songs that have made you great to the real fans. Your music is so much more than just "The Hits." And, if you can change the lyrics around to DMSR to fit your new beliefs then why can't you do that for other songs. And, more importantly, if you new beliefs prevent you from playing Darling Nikki then why in the hell would you even perform it (or just a snipet of it) in concert. C'mon, man. Now don't get me wrong. I am appreicative of every show you perform and loved every minute of it, however, I started getting disappointed when I kept hearing the same songs, anecdotes, and words to the crowd (Y'all any ready for me). It became more about Schtick then about performance.

I hope you keep touring and sharing your music with the world. We all know the music industry needs someone like you to show younger generations what good, make that great, music is all about. I just hope you add more songs to reward your life-long fans the opportunity to hear the songs that have become the soundtrack our lives.

Your loyal fan,

Seth

(PS - this is NOT intended to start a flame war here - I just wanted to air my frustration with the repetitive shows).

[Edited 5/30/11 14:35pm]

Dear Seth:

You say you don't want to start a flame war, but whether intentional or not, that is what you will do. I think it would have been wise of you not to go to so many concerts and get burnt out. These concerts were not meant to introduce new material but to play to as diverse as array of people possible with the "oldies" for those who may not have heard them before. You set yourself up for disappointment by going to too many shows. It is like indulging yourself with too many of your favorite drinks. After a while you become dull and resistant to them. But for those of us who didn't have the money, means, and time to see him in our youth--this concert was a chance to still catch Prince in his prime and introduce him to a whole new generation of fans, as well as rediscover him after decades of being out-of-touch. Therefore, what is a disappointment for you, is a new thrill others. My two cents. And that is all that it is. No disrespect intended. wink

I know exactly where "adguy31" is coming from. P could have at least really changed up the 2nd half of the 21 nights... wink biggrin

Let's try this and see how it goes with responses afterwards:

His next stint will be a couple of nights compiled by one fan per evening (competition chosen through a sparklynew website).

Like:

12-7-2011 - Prince playing 2 hours of Hank's choice

being....rock & b-sides etc

songlist

14-7-2011 - Prince playing 2 hours of Petra's choice

being...Purple Rain tour 1985 revisited...etc

16-7-2011 - Prince playing 2 hours of Kim's choices

being...ballads...etc

17-7-2011 - Prince playing 2 hours of Shelton's choice

being..Emanicipation (the 2 hour summary)...etc

I always felt that his aftershows and small venue shows were for the old school fans.....2004 HOB aftershows, Key Club, 3121 aftershows, etc. Those who are only familiar with the hits generally don't enjoy these shows and aren't willing to wait around until the man takes the stage at 1:30am and plays until 4:40am. In my opinion, they're missing out bigtime cuz he is on a totally different level at those shows cool

Funny, I've been to 10 aftershows, and 8 of them were full of background female singers singing lead on nearly every track, or worse...Doug E Fresh, or some other clown rapping, or Prince singing one verse of a song, and then no more singing. And believe it or not, a female singer singing "I'll Take You There," for the 1,000,000th time is not stuff of legends. 2 of those 10 aftershows were pretty good, but I'll take the main show over the aftershow 95% of the time. Other than Lovesexy and ONA, most of the aftershows were fairly lame.

Can we please stop referring to this as 21 nights and just accept that it was 21 shows?

That being said, I think Prince did a great job of mixing up the setlists with both the "crowd pleaser" songs for the casual fans and a few new songs and rare "gems" from the past for the hardcore "fams". I would gladly go see him perform every weekend for an entire year if I could and never get tired of it! He kind of spoiled us in LA, and right now I'm going through some serious withdrawals, and can't wait for the next time he comes to town! (although I'm sure it won't be anytime soon!). In the meantime I am just grateful for the wonderful memories I have gathered over the past 2 months! smile

Thank you. I know that everyone will not be happy but for $25 tickets to any show (good or bad) I am not going to complain. Heck, I would have been happy paying $25 for a one song show.

that's mainly because the lovesexy aftershows he was starting 2 do covers and extended jams not associated with the main lovesexy shows. now it's like all the aftershows have become just covers material and not just dead on prince songs. i can see the aspect of hearing a setlist and a rare song u get excited that he did the song only 2 find out one the background singers was doing the singing instead of prince.

I am appreicative of every show you perform and loved every minute of it, however, I started getting disappointed when I kept hearing the same songs, anecdotes, and words to the crowd (Y'all ain't ready for me).

The risk in that is everyone feels this dire need to attend Prince's every burp then go why'd he play that again. He's not crafting a show for an individual it's for an entire audience. If you go to ten shows get ready to hear Kiss(or whatever popular tune) maybe 8 times. It's a risk you openly accepted to take when purchsing so many nights on the same tour.

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

Earth to the org, Earth to the org: If it wasn't for the majority of Prince fans being stuck in the 1980's, his shows would be much different.

having gone 2 the four shows in NY i saw the same thing as u did with only a few us losing our minds when he started doing dreamer or hell when he did uptown not a whole lot stood up but as soon as raspberry beret came on ..oh how they stood up.

the other arguement i see over and over again during this discussion is "well he can't do a arena show with him just doing songs from his current material." well this is both true and false. some artists are contractually obligated 2 do "hits" in order 4 the promoter a return on their investement (slave) but then the artist can choose 2 do the other parts of their show releasing their creative output as they see fit (freedom is a beautiful thing).

or would it be best if prince just stuck 2 smaller venues ala the one night alone tour and play 2 his hearts content. i will not see prince in a arena venue ever again my choice, but not because i don't like his music, it's more of i don't like seeing prince pigeon hold by his "fans". i have sat down when the hits have been played during this recent voyage and only getting up when it's been non hit songs 2 prove a point 2 some around me that if it wasn't for that other music that made u really see a genius at his craft then what would u know of him?

That's a great approach, but regardless of whether it hurts peoples' feelings or not, Prince fans need to come to grips that we have the power to influence his setlists by our behavior at his shows. You and I are clearly in the minority, and you know how these things go: majority rules.

hence pr has become my bathroom break suvinor shopping, cigarette break song. yes we maybe in the miniority but we are a voice that shouldn't be shunned or told 2 stfu cause we exist. it's not that we're haters either just fans that see a talented artist being reduced 2 a jukebox.

the last line of ur response just makes me think of family name "the so called minority with a blink of an eye become the majority"

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

My friends always tell me that my expectations in life seem to be higher than the norm . . . but THEIR excuse for not having such high expectations is because they don't like being disappointed. Either you believe you have a role in this or you believe you are a spectator and nothing else.

For example, a gentleman like IamFunkay7. His LIFE has been altered due to Prince and Prince's music. If he receives this inspiration openly, he will one day be in position to inspire Prince. Am I getting too deep? Prince says a BUNCH of things on stage, whether in a big arena or small venue. Obviously, more of what he says at big arenas are more for show bs, but most often what he says in small venues, he means...literally. When he asked what do you want to hear, he's being serious, Why do I know? Because he ONLY does it in small venues. The problem is, people are so mesmerized, they don't know how to act. Prince has surrounded himself with so many yes people and you combine that with fans that will accept whatever he does, whatever he plays, whatever he says, whatever he wears . . . no matter what . . . and now you've created this "I've got too many hits" "We can be here all night" "I can play until next week" "I am a Bad man" "I wrote this song while looking in the mirror" "17,000 people can attest" "There's only one me" "I still look the same" "I'm so Cool" "This is the best place in the world" "Who would you rather be with than Prince?" "There is nobody you would rather be with than Prince" person. So, what I've learned is when people create a monster, they choose to not assume responsibility for their actions AND seem to enjoy the monster they've created. I enjoy Prince despite what he's become, nor for what he's become. And the bottom line is he'll get better or worse depending on his fans' reactions, so we see what direction this is going....

Can u tell us what was good about the LoveSexy & ONA aftershows?

Oh, some bootleg called Small Club from a Lovesexy aftershow that probably sold several thousand copies at $60 each in 1990 money, which for a bootleg with no promotion is amazing. The live versions of Still Would Stand All Time, Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic, People Without...were great, and even though Just My Imagination is a cover, the guitar solo was original and a legendary moment people still post about on here. Anybody who has the London, Copenhagen, or Winnipeg aftershows from ONA knows what I'm talking about.

fuck Seth

It was my opinion and a request to not hear the same songs or SCHTICK over and over again... every night. I have a right to my opinion. So FUCK YOU.

Seth

Settle Down Beavis! Prince probably is way in over his head in Schtick at this point, but since he's going to be 53 soon, he is still better over 50 than just about anybody I can think of in the history of the business over 50. Many of my faves were a caricature of themselves by 40, so the fact that Prince has had some shining moments over 40 is worth something.

James Brown invented a genre of music, but at 40, he started to slip a bit, and by 52, he had to depend on somebody else writing Living In America to have a hit...Prince may never have a hit again, but back when Brown started to slip, Top 40 radio would still play songs by older veterans of music. Brown did not have to put up with the over 30 backlash Prince dealt with.

Edit...James Brown probably didn't start his slip until around 1977...at age 44....but at age 44, Prince had the Rainbow Children, which was still good music, even if the Darth Vader narration was a bit over the top.

As a Who fan who has more than once, attended three nights in a row and heard the same 15 songs at all three, I find this commentary laughable.

The song list for the entire residency has over 100 titles on it.

Can anyone name any artist/band that comes even remotely close to this? No, no chance.

I have worked for many large bands and seen their shows over and over...no one does this.

Say Brothers...Can I get some credit...NO?!?!?

grateful dead (now called furthur), phish, widespread panic, just to name a few. they usually go at least three to four shows without playing a single repeat.

sorry to add fuel to this fire, but these are three pretty large bands that play to similar sized crowds.

Hippie jam bands notwithstanding. How many actual songs do they play per show? You can fly for days when you only do 10 at a crack...and mostly riff for hours... lol

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.
