omg the 'mom' was the highlight of the show..and the second highlight was Prince getting the entire arena to staqnd and cheer for her..that was so awesome/sweet. I hope that is on tape somewhere because its better than some bullshit past erotica of singing Darlig Nikki etc.

Omg P was definitely in rare form last night, and the fog machine was in overdrive lol

My highlights were the elderly lady, Prince ripping his shirt open, and Anotherloverholenyohead. I felt like I died and came back to life! I even made it to the after show (thanks to a family member that knows a celeb). I lucked out, hopefully I can pull it off again tonight! I'll be Lodge 7, row J.

Oh and pictures were out of the question for me! Security is ridiculous in VIP...the whole night I kept thinking to myself, "Man, this would be a great shot". Will have the nikon ready tonight however.

Not just photos but a vid clip of it..it was such a great moment..Prince and the audience was so generous/joyous about propping her. It was quite a showstopper imo

Was lucky to score VIP table tix last night!!! I think I was the only white boy in a suit dancing up there. (Why get such good tix and not dance?? I'll never understand!)

I have been to many shows at the Forum but this one, at least for me, might have been the best.

that... was... awesome.

Sadly no Sheila E. but I was very happy to see Maceo Parker. I nearly lost it when I saw him sneak into the stage area.

See you guys tonight!!!

I think there were tix at the box office, selling, as there were long lines as usual in that area. The only scalping I witnessed was myself selling my extra ticket to my friend. razz

Well, THAT was...brutal.

I wanted to read some other reviews or comments before I wrote...in fact I'm debating whether or not I'm even in the proper space to offer my thoughts. Maybe I should sleep this one off and let my mind recover for a minute.

The setlist is accurate from Funkenberry's tweets but in the interest of consistency with my past posts:

Show began approximately 9:25...for the first time that I've seen there was no gameplay with the houselights teasing on and off. I came in late for Nikka's set so I don't know if she started late or went over...but the crew frantically changed over the stage after she ended so I knew there wouldn't be the typical wait before Prince came on. He came out alone to a darkened stage, made his way 'round the perimeter and ended at the piano where he performed the now-dreaded samples first, instead of as an encore. I've read where he did that in other cities but this was...interesting and weird at the same time. The audience seemed to LOVE it. I wondered, why the hell is Prince doing karoake when he has a world-class band capable of jamming on the fly who could just PLAY THE FUCKING SONGS?

See, I told you I shouldn't be writing this now.

I mean...see, it makes no sense to me now. There are NO $25 seats anymore. There is NO casual walk up to the window or casual login to Ticketmaster to get prime low to mid-loge seats for the price of a good lunch. This was an EVENT. Too many people, Hollywood-type bigwig/VIP laden crowd. The neighborhood riff-raff were kept out tonight; our time has come and gone. The ticket window ladies were surly, nasty. The friendly, comfortable vibe that had made this Forum engagement so...wonderful, was gone. This should not have taken place in Inglewood, this was strictly a Staples or Nokia-level event. The 'hood that George Lopez so lovingly namechecked when he brought Prince out on opening night has somehow been forgotten, those roots forsaken along the way. This was corporate night.

Why is Prince charging $70 to get into the door just to hear him sing partial lyrics over recorded tracks..?

Anyway...

KAROAKE SET:

When Doves Cry (most of the song)

Nasty Girl

Sign O' the Times

Alphabet Street

Forever In My Life

Darling Nikki (if I hear him say one mo' gin "I can't sing this song, I'm in rehab!!!" I think I'm goinng to murder someone)

Hot Thing

I Would Die 4 U

CONCERT:

DMSR

Pop Life

Musicology/Prince & the band w/ Maceo Parker (the great, GREAT MAY-CEE-OHHHH)

Shhhhh w/ U Will Be With Me (sans guitar, featuring Maceo)

Interlude: Renato

Prince joins in interlude on guitar

Take Me With U

Anotherloverholeinyourhead w/ Rock Lobster

Peach

Cool w/ Don't Stop...

Let's Work

U Got The Look

Make U Feel My Love

Purple Rain

Encores:

A Love Bizarre w/ Nikka Costa

Controversy

Disco Heat

Baby I'm A Star

Kiss

Nothing Compares 2 U (w/ Shelby J)

Sigh.

A good show, I guess...not a great one by any means but certainly not terrible...a bit short on length, a bit short on songs...way too short on guitar for my preference...highlights for me? Anotherloverholeinyourhead and Peach because the rockstar Prince is my favorite iteration of him...Cool was strong and rocked hard...I'm looking at my notes and wondering if I left off any songs because man, does that feel light. Maybe I'm spoiled. Maybe I've reached a point of saturation. I've experienced ten of the thirteen Forum shows including tonight, one of the Troubadour sets and the second House Of Blues show and maybe I'm full now because usually I'm happy, excited, ecstatic after a show and tonight I'm just...not. But it wasn't a poor performance. Prince exerted a lot of energy tonight...danced a lot, worked the crowd. I don't know what it is. Maybe beginning with the karoake threw me. Maybe it was the drunken crowd around me. Maybe it was the pushy woman who finagled her way into an empty seat next to me and seemed put off because I wasn't nice to her...hell, she was interrupting my flow...who got straight gaffled by one of Prince's security for videotaping during "Anotherlover..." and was PUT THE FUCK OUT OF THE FORUM. Yes. Dude straight called over two or three blue shirts and said she's out. He was considerate enough to come back and apologize to me for the interruption which was nice, but I digress...

I loved the laid back environment where it felt like it was a personal little show in a big room in my backyard, where I could go without a lot of preparation and stress, enjoy a fantastic view, hear a fantastic performance, get something new and different every time and never feel full. In fact, I looked forward to the next one.

This felt like just another concert to me...that should have been downtown instead of in my 'hood. I resented the intrusion.

[Edited 5/28/11 2:20am]

I've had that same experience a few times when going to multiple shows on a tour... seems like the music is "fine", maybe not the most exciting song choices, but it's hard to get into it for some reason you can't pinpoint.

Might be time for a break. Even superfans reach a stauration point. But... then what if the show you skip is the most awesome one of the run?

Great show as always

Security is off the chain tho. Got into it with one security guard on the floor. On some "Get back in your seat"...NOBODY is in their seat...gimme a break dude

Got into the aftershow again. Was on the left side of the stage and P came out and sat at the table next to me for a hot second and then left.

Got into it with another security guard. Came over to a group of us and yelled "Who's taking pictures? I'm gonna put you out!"...everybody looks stunned because that came out of absolutely nowhere and nobody even had a phone/camera out. Kinda messed up my groove and the rebel that I am yelled back "Nobody is taking pictures!" He yelled back, "Get her out of here!" Got his supervisor and the supv apologized on his behalf because everybody around me agreed that nobody had a camera out when dude came screaming at me. Supervisor was cool and let me stay. Went back to jammin...

Shelby came out and start dancing near where I was standing and me, her, and 2 other girls just danced til the night was over. Despite the security snafus, it was an awesome night overall...

And then there was the woman, probably someone's grandmother, who boogied down during Controversy. She had the Forum going nuts. Probably the best moment of the show. Out on the concourse as people were leaving, I saw her again with a crowd around her, all giving her another round of applause. That was the spirit of the crowd I saw - positive and life-embracing.

I witnessed this!! Me and my friend were trying to start our obnoxious "I eat my dinner in a fancy restaurant" chant, when we saw her. And we were going to just say "hi, you were awesome out there tonight!" but instead, a whole standing ovation started!! Everyone loved her!

Brought my 76 year old mom last night, 11th row Risers... She loved it! She wished she was the grandma that got on stage. This is now my 4th show of the 21 night stand, and I'm still having a ball! Every show feels different even though some things are the same.

Someone wrote that if they hear Prince do the line "I'm in rehab" one more time they will puke... hmmm sounds like they maybe need to find another hobby, cause I still chuckle. If I brought a pal with me to the show and they complained because the 25 dollar tickets weren't VIP, the show started too late, the show was too short, the parking was too much money, the crowd was too VIP, the concert goers were too drunk, Prince shouldn't play samples when he has musicians who can play... I would have called a Waaaa-ambulance to take them away.

Luckily my mom didn't complain once, except for maybe the way I was driving on the way to the show. She didn't seem to have a problem with Prince's sampler set, she didn't mind that he opened the show with it. She danced through all of it screaming and clapping. My point is... Prince knows what he is doing. People act like they know better than him... they don't. He has been selling out stadiums for 3 decades. He knows how to control the energy of the room.

Phew! With that said, I would like to say that four Prince concerts in one month, for just a little over 200 bucks! whoa! and not crappy seats either, in the Purple Pit, and 3 times in the risers! I'm floored!! Couldn't ask for anything more, and you will never hear me complain!!! Highlights for me, over the course of the four shows.

1. Having fun with the various people I have brought with me to the different shows.

2. Being able to afford other luxuries (limo, t-shirt, food, beer) because tickets were so darn cheap.

3. She's Always in My Hair ->Future Soul Song ->Purple Rain ->Glamorous Life on May 6

4. The Question of U/The One, You're the One For Me, The Glamourous Life (Sheila was on fire this night) Take Me With U (with Janelle Monae) Let's Go Crazy ->Delirious -> 1999 ->Little Red Corvette ->Purple Rain and Superstitious with Stevie Wonder on May 13 (Friday the 13th)

5. When Eye Lay My Hands On U, Dreamer, Somewhere Here on Earth/I Love You But Don't Trust You Anymore, If I Was Your Girlfriend -> Insatiable -> Scandalous -> Adore on May 14

6. DMSR, Shhh w/ U Will Be With Me (feat. Maceo Parker) Anotherloverholeinyourhead -> Peach, A Love Bizarre w/ Nikka Costa, and Baby I'm a Star. Prince was joyful on this night, ripped his shirt open even!

7. I've loved the opening acts I've seen so far... but then again I was already fans of the artists. Esperanza Spalding was amazing, so talented! Janelle Monae worked the stage like she's been doing it forever, and Nikka Costa was just downright sexy and soulful, she also worked the stage like a pro.

If Prince sticks around for another week or two, I'm sure I'll be back!

yeah, we've most certainly been spoiled the last month and a half. i really, really want to see the last show, but not for $150. i didn't even pay that much for the troubadour show, lol.

what i don't understand is how all of a sudden this weekend's shows sold out so quickly. was it really b/c of house of blues media attention/stars in attendance? i don't think dr. funkenberry's tweets reach THAT many local people in LA about it being the last weekend. and, its a holiday weekend, you'd think people were out of town?

I have no way of knowing if this is factual but I have a feeling many of those tickets were bought up or given to corporations, businesses, etc and given away to clients, partnters, friends, etc. My seat was near the VIP entrance to the Forum Club and many of those people were very much unlike the crowds that have been in attendance throughout the run prior to this weekend. Again, just speculation on my part but I don't believe that all of those tickets were suddenly bought up by the public over the past two weeks when virtually of the previous shows were fairly open up until and bthrough showtime...some, yes but not all...but I could be wrong.

I got there kinda late... around 8:30. Some of the scalpers seemed like they had tickets they were gonna be stuck with... heard one say I just want to get my $ back. I had a $25 pit ticket waiting for me at will call. There was a long line of people waiting to buy tickets... don't know what the prices were.

OK. If i typed 2,365 instead of the actual number that was an error.

If I typed that I thought "...every one is supposed to make (me) cum as hard as the first time," that too was in error.

Since I typed neither of those statements then what's the basis of your comment other than mindreading..?

Come on. I'm more than willing and able to engage in a friendly, informative discourse but don't take shots and don't make assumptions. Communicate.
