Thing is there is no rule when it comes to shows and what an artist has to play, its that simple. I dont buy into the notion that he HAS TO DO hits, no artist has to do anything but show up to the venue, whether you paid 15 dollars or 1500 it doesnt mean U get a certain show, so i have never understood that whole "well they have to play hits to satisfy" the people already paid, u can go out there and sing the phonebook backwards and tough S*** to everyone. So my only complaints on this run of shows has been the "set list" i realize his time is reduced due too guests, thats fair, i just feel that he was someone that championed "not treading water" and he always has been doing that in new ways. So im not hatin, im just saying that with all the music hes got, to limit himself to certain ones over and over, for a few tours now, its getting a little played. Musicology was the supposed retirement of the same songs he has been pulling out at every show since that tour, so what gives?

Everyone here pretty much gave a good report of what went down. In the beginning of Prince's segment of the show, Prince and the band opened with a song called "Welcome2America", which is apparently a track with a socio-political tone. I have to say though, that Prince kicked NYC's ass last night at MSG with his performance--he mopped, sweeped, waxed and shined the funk out of MSG last night, while seducing and teasing the audience in that red hot, sexy outfit he had on, and the moves he made in it. Lawd have mercy ladies and gents... I'm just sayin'.lol It kind of felt like he took us back to the Lovesexy era for a minute. I loved that version of "Kiss" he sang as well. He worked every corner of that stage the entire night, even the back part of the stage, that some fans thought he would not come near or that they would not get a chance to see him. He was definitely in high energy at MSG. He had the majority of the audience on their feet most of the show. I loved the black cape he had on when he came out to jam with Larry Graham, during Larry's performance. It was similar to the one Janelle Monae wears when she performs. His performance of "The Beautiful Ones" was awesome and the Misty Copeland dancing while he sang that song, helped to top the performance off.

Prince and Larry brought a double-dose of funk when they jammed together. I have to say, I was impressed with Larry's bass playing, and the appreciation he received from the audience. He kicked that bass' ass all over MSG last night. The funk was so dense from his bass playing, foot spray and disinfectant would not have had a chance in clearing that funk out. I have even more appreciation and respect for him as a bass player/musician, especially one who played with Sly and the Family Stone, and was part of some great hits/classics from an era where so many socio-political events were happening at the time. Larry proved and is is definitely the King of bass and funk, no question.

One of the nicest moments of the show, was the duet with Prince and Shelby singing, "Nothing Compares 2 U" and how they performed. It was not hard to notice the respect and appreciation among their friendship. I also have to give Shelby, Elisa and Liv a hand, because they too "worked the stage", every part of it, hyping the audience. I loved the large, gold fans all 3 ladies were waving while singing on some of the songs, as they stood by the piano at one point. Their harmonizing is so on point.

Sheila E came onto the stage like the beautiful Queen she knows she is, wearing an eye-catching, fitted, gold and black dress with a short train. She had the audience in awe when she graced us with her presence and performance, and naturally as always, NY gave her love. Always good to see Sheila E as part of Prince's concerts. One funny part, was when Sheila E came back out, after she changed into pants, and she handed Prince her jacket, and he walked away with it to find somewhere to lay it, and when he laid it down on the bench, he told the camera guys (paraphrasing) "Don't film this part".lol

As for the celebrities, it was hilarious when Prince called Sherri Shepherd on stage, he told her to come up and then said "Oh no not Sherri Shepherd!", to Sheila E, and jokingly played like he was about to run away, but came back and said (paraphrasing) "Sherri, come up here and show us what you really want to do!". Earlier during his performance, he gave Sherri a shoutout during one of his songs, so those of you who were in the PM&M forum a couple of days back, criticizing her over that statement she made to him, it was apparent last night, that Prince appreciates Sherri Shepherd and apparently had no problem calling her on stage last night. There were quite the celebrities there, Prince and Sheila E called up Dr. Cornel West,

?uestlove, Naomi Campbell, Sherri Shepherd . Then other celebs got up there--Alicia Keys, Spike Lee, AJ Calloway, and more. Also, Bria Valente got on stage to dance as well, and she looked very pretty, in a sparkling, black dress with an open back. They were all having a good time. I saw some fans complained that it was because of the celebs that he didn't do another encore, but I believe it was the 11pm curfew is why there was no encore, and it was already around 10:45pm when the celebs were called on stage, so no I don't think there would have been another encore regardless. A friend of mine text me who had a friend who worked there to let her know that was it for the night.

Good show;good performance, high energy. I have to say that anywhere you sat, other than the VIP/floor seats, you had a good view, thanks to the jumbo screens, which although I was sitting in the promenade 100s section, the big screens helped a lot, and you were able to have a very, good view of what was going on onstage. Can't wait to see what they bring on 29th at MSG!headbang

Hey you, don't be so quick to worship.. hammerlol The thing is, no fan is required to go to a show where they constantly complain about the same artist playing some of his hits, they don't want to hear. It's the fans that made those same hits, classics. So always expect you will hear some of those songs played at his shows. Besides, most of the time, many of those classics are not played the same way, when he does perform it.

I don't get some of these fans who complain to no end about the same thing, but next thing you know, they're running out to buy a ticket to his next show. Kind of defeats the seriousness of their (your) complaints when you do that.

That's kind of like someone complaining about a weekly tv show, but will still turn the channel to watch that same show, on a weekly basis and sometimes even taping it, so they won't miss it.lol Guess we'll see you on the 29th at his next show. I mean you did say you were going to be there in a few posts up on this thread...right? teddylol (Just messin' with ya!)

dude you really dont know production, thats the same stage...

the stage has flooring that is removeable and changeable it can be black one day, blue the next or whatever color he chooses. why spend money on a new stage show when he can roll out the stage and add new elements to the floor of the stage.

i bet you didnt notice the monitors step up around the stage with the lyrics scrolled on them.

Another great show. Hard to compare to the 17th. There is a certain mystique to MSG and to see it packed and rocking was special. Having said that my first impressions after just leaving was the energy in the first half of the show was off the wall, even better than yesterday, however, it seemed to go down the second half to me, although I may be wrong. I would like to see how others feel. I didn't really like the version of Purple Rain tonight as well as last night. I think he may have been a little tired out by the end after two nights in a row---I know I was! In any case, I think if he had returned to do the second encore like last night, it would have put this one over the top. I think that made last night really special and left a feeling that it was a little bit lacking for those of us who were there both nights. In the end it seems he really was into it last night to come back out and do that extra set.

Anyway, it was great to see the three shows and I am kind of glad the fourth was cancelled and moved to a month from now. That will give us a chance for all these concerts to sink in time for us to recharge before doing it one more time (or hopefully more). Sorry I won't be at the 29th, a pre-planned Christmas break trip I can't get out of! Nice mix of songs. Interestingly enough, in the new tour book it also mentions DMSR, Do me Baby, Nasty Girl, Screams of Passion, Forever in my Life and Free as part of the set list for these shows. None of them have been done yet. It also lists just the MSG shows and IZOD shows on the back page of the tour book. I wonder if this is it? It seems kind of strange to make a tour book for five shows (and it wasn't even out for the first two), but who knows? One other observation, no high heels tonight, back to the flats.

[Edited 12/18/10 21:09pm]

i got the tourbook and it mentioning all those songs he hasn't done yet really has me stoked for the next two. too bad he wont get a full version of do me baby.

[b/what are just gonna sit there and watch? ok[/b]

future soul song! i wanna be your lover!

i think the crazy dancers and my camera acting up kinda wrecked the 17th for me a bit but once i gave up on the camera it was rocking.

he literally tore the roof off last night. i was 7 rows off the floor or really 2 from where the wrestlers would come out. not the side larry came out. i see why ppl say being off the floor is better. saw alot more. maybe i can get my 29th 13 rows rear stage switched to either side lower level near the middle of the symbol.

She was stunning in the dress. Absolutely breath-taking. The stupid camera man for the video screens was showing Prince when he was standing by her drums. I was thinking "hey, he's on the whole show... show HER, show HER!".

Sadly she put on black pants for the 2nd song she was out for at the end. Did not look as good as the dress.

Bad quality photo here... but the caption is exactly what was going through my mind. She truly was stunning.

This show was off the chain!!! I only sat down for 2 seconds and this girl beat me up and ordered me to get back up! I was down in VIP (Section B, Row D, Seat 11). This was an excellent seat and gave me a good view of everything. A multitude of celebs in area as well (Whoopi Goldberg, Sherri Sheppard, Naomi Campbell, Spike Lee, ?uestlove, Sinbad, Larry Graham & his lovely wife). The energy was off the meter in our section. We were dancing our asses off. I had 4 Bria Valente sightings and she's a very beautiful woman indeed razz . Prince ruled over us as he knew he would from the first note of the evening. There was this beautiful young lady behind me who was crying during 'Purple Rain'. It was her birthday(she turned 30) and this was her first Prince concert ever. She told me she never thought she'd get to hear him sing 'Purple Rain' live. I put my arm around her and we sang the ad libs together. I told her that this was very special because Prince very rarely plays the entire song as he did last night. Happy Birthday indeed! Prior to the show I had dinner and drinks with fellow org members and it was great. We all connected instantly and wound up hanging out after the show! It was definitely a beautiful night.

Much props 2 Banks 4 showing us a great time after the show and to Estelle81 for setting up the get 2gether at BBQ's!

yeah i saw her someone on twitter post a vid of prince performing cool and they showed her on the big screen i was shock that was her it almost didn't look like herself she looks alot younger and alot prettier smile she had on black i didnt see her whole outfit but what i could see he looked great cool... and she was really rocking out with the crowd dancing & everything cool

The only thing missing from these concerts so far is a nice set on the piano like he used to, How Come you don't call me anymore, Starfish and coffee, and some other nice songs to join in on similar to the guitar solo he did on the Musicology tour.

4 the past couple of years all i have been told was 'oh l4 u weren't there 2 know how it was so i don't know why ur "hating" so much"

WELL

I WAS THERE LAST NIGHT AT THE GARDEN AND I CAN TELL U NOW THAT I WAS DISAPPOINTED IN PRINCE SO MUCH LAST NIGHT!!

now this isn't just a slam or "negative" review cause there were some nice moments

HIGHLIGHTS:

prince has always had a nice lighting system 4 his shows and last night was no exception. THE STAGE IS HOT!!! I LOVE IT!! the lighting design was HOT!!! and from where my seats were in the so called "nosebleeds" i was able 2 see everything happening on that stage prior 2 a lot of folks at the garden, including when during graham central stations set, i saw prince hop up b4 the lights hit his area. and the same when sheila e came out during u got the look, clear as day could see her about 2 pop up.

graham central station and larry's bass playing was HOT!!

hearing the new song Welcome 2 America was HOT!! just wished that the lights weren't out during the song or that prince could have been on stage visible

Shhh ..JOHN BLACKWELL bow AND FINALLY A prince song!! John's drumstics were either laser, LED or glow in the dark..HOT!!!

Hearing uptown live finally ..HOT ..tho it sucks that many didn't know that song but wanna scream 4 raspberry beret ...SERIOUSLY?!!!

Prince's energy was very high and it was nice seeing him dance more and have his "billie jean" moment during kiss

Ida looked HOT!! i swear prince must have pulled her 2 the side and said "look ur funky on the bass but the jeans and t shirt thing..AIN'T HAPPENING in my band"

NOT SO HOT MOMENTS:

seriously ur gonna invite just celebs on the stage and not ur true fans? tho seeing alicia keys on stage was a nice treat

seriously ur gonna play disco heat but not dance 4 me or even the dance electric? ur gonna play that shit? wow!!

what happend 2 the days of prince having his band members have a spot light and say their names through the course of the show?

and the rest of the setlist ..zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz damn is this the same prince that i grew up with?

BONUS MOMENTS

meeting up with banks ..yo bro 4 blocks down ..u should have said 4 blocks across as well lol

estelle81 ..finally!!! hug

bbq's!!! damn i want some wings now lol

meeting up at the apollo afterwards seeing pri, newpowersoul

and last but not least ..seeing my girl npggirl77!! Mwah!! get home safe hun!!

what i take from this experinece is the joy of seeing old friends and meeting new ones, but prince seriously ..u need 2 step up ur game again son and go back 2 the prince that belived in the new music and took it by the horses mane and rode it and didn't give a shit what anyone else thinks about it

nosebleeds? that sux! loved hearing all your prince stories

And prior to that it was after the name change to prince that the hits were to be retired! confused

[Edited 12/19/10 16:29pm]

How is it complaining? i mean i was not saying damn this bullshit i want my money back, im just saying that on top of his great musicianship and way that he does shows, which i pointed out once again, but some only read what they perceive as negative, im saying you got a lot of room to work with and artists dont owe fans certain songs, that goes for any artist. What im saying is that Prince shows that i have seen (yes 76) the man has continued to blow me away as a musician and showman, but there is something lacking in the variety of what he is playing. To say that if you have a complaint then dont go the next time is typical response when people dont read what is being said, i clearly never said i didnt enjoy the show, everything everyone said to glorify the show i do agree with, but to say there was a perfect night and nothing could be done to improve the tour? i mean come on now are we drinking that much kool aid. I mean i think Obama is a good president, but shit i'll be damned if i wont complain on alot of BS he's fucked up on already, that doesnt mean i wont vote for him or respect him, but shit, hes got a lot of room to improve, blind praise leads to false idols
