I guess you're never neutral when you're to describe a Prince concert – not on the very next day at least – but only the word sublime truly sums up this experience.

Look at the set list. See the lineup.

Renato seemed in awe of Prince through the whole thing – like he'd never seen anything like this little guy before. (Despite the report from the security person before the concert that they'd been practicing turnarounds for seven full hours before the show). That cracked me up, just watching these two guys interact with each other. I mean, can you imagine a more atypical band member for funk/soul/pop act Prince than this curious looking bossa nova dude – but no, he's the best, so he's with Prince.

Did y’all see that?!!

Prince after John’s drum routine in Shh

At this point (Shh), I literally heard people’s jaws dropping around me. Like "What the fuck just happened behind the drum set!!!" A lot of the people in the audience obviously hadn’t seen Prince since the Lovesexy tour, or the Oslo concert in 1992, or ever before, and had no idea of how good he actually is today. Or the quality of the band he travels with.

The whole evening was just packed with “Wow” moments. Another was his Detroit style dance moves throughout – the dude was just on fire – I don’t know what people thought they expected, some washed up Tina Turner retro routine, maybe. People need to learn that when you go to a Prince concert, he rarely lets you off the hook. I overheard some dude on the way out wondering who was handling the guitar when Prince wasn’t soloing.

All the while 9000 people are queing up in Oslo to see Lady Gaga. Nice planet.

The show was a bit like the Roskilde show, only better. Keyword is Minneapolis sound. Three The Time songs! Uptown! Let’s Work! Tight.

The new bass player was exquisite. Sheila was stunning – as always.

Like most people, I’m not fanatical about the whole Family Stone/Shake Your Body Down To The Ground/Dance (Disco Heat)-thing. But what he did this time was to just take it a little bit easy on these sequences. Get them over with. Move on. Move to Cream. To Forever In My Life (a highlight). To Cool (too cool). And oh, he actually did the bird when he did The Bird. Priceless.

The opening, with The Love We Make, was like heaven. Quite bold. And perfectly presented. I’m guessing that maybe 0,2 % of the people in attendance knew this one. But the mere quality of the song, and the power of the deliverance, truly won us over. God, how I love the fact that he opened with this one, instead of LGC or 1999 or any of the others.

We paid to see you, Prince. Do what you wanna.

And when he came back at the end, after a zillion “encores”, and did Sometimes It Snows In April just for me, I nearly lost it. That was a truly perfect ending. Neto was visibly moved when he did his little solo. My own eyes was all glassy and hurting like hell from all the emotion. Prince himself was all coolness, as usual. Just presenting his beautiful music with his slightly over-sized guitar hanging round his pretty little hips.

Danmark, Italia, Belgia, NYC and the rest of ya: Please be excited.

Be very excited.

He’s loving this now.

You captured the mood of the evening beautifully. Thank you! I haven't had time to make a proper report, but this sums it up very well!!

It is fascinating to see that the three Oslo based newspapapers are agreeing on a 6/6 score, while the two Bergen papers are a bit more modest...

I travelled from Oslo, and naturally do agree with the Oslo papers.

I also brought along my thirteen year old daughter - she's completely sold. The problem of course, for her is how can she improve her concert experiences after this? wink

Do we know anything of what became of the man after the main show on Monday, by the way?

Did he get his rocks off at Elefanten or Café Opera, or did he head straight for the continent? Any word? Rumours? Sightings? Interaction...?

shocked

I would say, take her to more Prince concerts! The only artist who can top a Prince concert is the Purple One himself. wink

He went straight to the airport and back to Copenhagen where he is staying this week. Then he will probably be in Paris next week before the last 2 shows in Italy.

Yes indeed. We should probably have talked less online about the first ones in Bergen and then the Copenhagen ones would have stayed a while. lol But the important ones are still there.

The thing about the Bergen vs the Oslo papers only goes to show one important thing: The Bergen reviewers don't know when to appreciate and treasure a true concert gem when it's suddenly there right in front of them (they didn't even recognize The Love We Make), but the Oslo people are more used to this. The Oslo papers will have to show the way a little longer, they know when something stands out. Bergens Tidende have given 5/6 to just about every big concert in Bergen lately. Righfully. But this one was just a little better than the other ones.

It's quite typical for Bergen.. nothing ever gets good enough. No foreigner should come tell them what's funky! Only way to score a 6 is probably to be from Bergen, 'cause they sure do love their own. razz

Could we expect to see a full show vid come out of this maybe? A lot of this summers shows have been getting great bootleg releases, so one can hope!
