just a terribly average performance... neutral

I'm with the folks who wish he'd stop recycling 'days of wild'...

probably most baffling is the marketing perspective: I mean e'erybody by now knows prince can and will jam hard for hours but the average listener wants to hear a real song and real melody, I suspect...I just wonder who Prince, in his own mind, thinks he's reaching by performing this type of song on Leno. I mean, the point of going on TV is to sell records, right?

IT wasnt really much of a SONG though, was it? Just a big spoonfull of funky JAM.
He probably wrote it in 15 minutes.

I don't even know what that's supposed to mean. Just a big spoonful of funky JAM? you say he probably wrote it in 15 min? And ? the point would be?

some of the best poetry I've ever written flowed from me faster than I could write it down. so I don't see what you think you mean.

Yes - but you're a genius you see. You're in the same league as all the great artists. Everyone knows that great art is conjured up in moments and never the result of well-thought through hard work. Especially when you've been at it as long as you both have.
AS any great poet or painter or writer. It all came out in one great rush.

I can't remember anything from that song - the hook or anything...
It was a Jam.

I can't really understand how anyone wouldn't dig that. He blew it up.

The background vocals were the strongest he's had.

Frederic WAILED on that harp... he was also playing harmony with horns and vox.

He's a great addition.

Morris TORE that synth line up.

Did anyone catch that Prince was wearing flops and NOt high heels?? This is the first time I've seen him without them; I think it's related to his hip replacement. Or he was just comfy!

Was a good performance, but I wonder if he knows he's been singing that same "melody" for over 10 years.
I can't remember any of the song. Not the name, not the hook, nothing.

I do remember enjoying the performance, however.

I wonder if the whiners about Prince know they´ve been singing the same "melody" for over 15 years.

Get your facts straight... razz

Most of us whiners have only been signing this tune for about 10 years (think NPS as the turning point - with a break for that short TRC period where he at least got experimental again). biggrin

Thanks so much for the link. Damned DVR cut off halfway through this performance, so I'm glad I got another chance to see the whole thing.

As for the performance itself, I thought it was damned good. Was it his best ever? No, but it was still better than 90% of what I see from his peers these days. Prince may be inconsistent with his studio stuff recently, and he may be a questionable businessman, but NO ONE can seriously dispute his ability to tear up a stage in live performance. His weakest live offerings are better than the vast majority of other artists.

I may get aggravated with the dude at times, but every time I see him live I'm reminded why I'm still a fan!

Yeah I too was a bit disappointed in the performance myself. Or maybe it was just the song he chose. Maybe tonight will be better.

Me too. I dig the album version an awful lot, but that was not a great performance. I like what I've heard of Fredrick's work elsewhere, but I don't think Harmonica is the right choice for this track. I think Renato would have been a better addition.

On another note, I'm assuming the white girl is Elisa. Was she always round, or is that new? I've got the CD at home, but don't recall anything but a close up on the cover. I don't mean to offend anyway here, just wondering.

That harmonica guy was so over the top that he detracted from the performance. He looked like one of those delusional loser Prince fanatics that you have to deal with at every Prince gig. Renato would have been a better choice - or better yet a sax - where was Eric?

I am glad I wasnt the only one thinking that. It makes me wonder if Prince is slipping because I could see how uncool that guy was yet he was onstage with Prince - even hot dogging behind Prince to get in his shot!

I thought it was interesting to see Prince without his vauted heels. I've seen the pics of him in the airport, etc. without the heels, and sporting shoes resembling "house shoes" but I think last night was the first time I saw them in a performance.

yeah, i noticed this too...i couldn't stop looking at his feet. lol

I dont like those shoes. I have seen him wearing white ones - few months ago, TMZ caught him coming out of a club with them one and they were trying to clown him. I better see some heels tonight!

I agree. Prince in particular only appears on tv to sell. My single thought while watching this was, "Oh my. Hot mess." Just tuneless. The celeb-with-posse glasses. The backup singer outfits? Maybe a 50 year old's idea of some age 13 randomly grabbed from Ragstock racks.

I've been impressed by many of his tv performances, incl. Come On. Not this. Not this at all... maybe his shirt. Or scarf, whatever. It was fun in the "Hey, Prince on tv. Cool." but that isn't why he was there. I'm not even saving this one, zero interest in rewatching it.

For me it can only get better this week.
