The latest rumor (via HQ) as of last Thursday:

http://journals.aol.com/r...eLifeVegas

Meantime, the passion of purple is about to get added to the Rio’s colorful entertainment scene. One-named pop icon, Prince had spent several consecutive days meeting with Harrah’s corporate officials as Luxe Life revealed two weeks ago -- but instead of winding up at the Flamingo or Harrah’s Strip hotels, Prince winds up on a regal throne to rule at the Rio. Luxe Life confirmed with a Rio executive last night that negotiations between the hotel and Prince are almost all wrapped up. Prince would appear for several, 3-night, weekend concerts over the next 12 months in his newly-configured and re-decorated Club Rio. As the new club theater's "entertainment director," he will also book other acts when he's not appearing there. "He's very serious, very polite, and very thoughtful about having his major imprint on this business venture and he wants to ensure it succeeds really well," I was told.

woot!

I'm very excited about this, especially the part about it being HIS club! This isn't a showroom folks, it's a nightclub. Heck, it could be like the VIP club thing on NPGMC, with Prince sitting around shooting the shit with people. wink

i've got a mixed response to this news and of course, part of it is selfish! on the one hand, i am annoyed that he is going so commercial. i want more experimental and inspirational music please!! on the other hand, i am curious about this move that he is making. maybe it will be a stroke of genius somehow. so part of me will remain open and just watching what he'll do.

maybe he's using this venue as a big vehicle to push his jehovah message, get the message to as many people as possible? y'never know.
That's right, you are Divinity

Entertainment director?
hm....I hope he chooses the acts wisely. I don't think you'll find many people spending Vegas-level loot to see just a parade of Prince's pals performing when he ain't there.

I guess for him it beats having a grueling tour schedule. He can perform for a year and stay in one place and make scads of money.

But damn.... I can't go to Vegas y'know? I ain't got that kinda freedom no more.
So good luck to Prince. I guess I'll see him sometime in 2008.
ha.

IF this becomes true, it will be a sad, sad day. It makes me wonder if Mani is taking a hefty chunk of the "Purple Pie"... did he blow too much Musicology tour money renting that huge Mansion in Cali so he could throw Hollywood parties, only to turn around and give up half of what was left in a divorce?

SIGH.

I thought P had a midwestern mindset... Work Hard, live moderately.

What will make this a sad day is Either:

A) he needs the $$$
B) he is waving the white flag in the battle for cultural relevance.

If A), then he would be better off resigning with a major that is COMMITED to promoting him HUGE.

If B), then he enters the boneyard of formerly relevant artists relegated to looking backward, rather than our forward-looking Prince of Old. Vegas?...EW!

or ...C) I have 1 caveat to give him, He MAY, just MAY be thinking of his Christian views and taking a message to the sinner(s). My first reaction was "SIN CITY? Why is he going to make money for the predators?" Then I thought, "UNLESS he is going to prosthyletize (sp?) to an audience that needs it.

BUT if NOT C), then I sincerely question his Christian convictions, no Christian with integrity would aid in lining the pockets of casinos who pray upon the weakest's basest, most fleshy desires for the good of their own checkbooks.

I Love Prince, I Love his music, but I gotta call out a huge inconsistency when I see it...because I love Jesus MORE than I love Prince.
"It's all good when U no the only fame is the light that comes from God, and the joy U get 2 say His name."

I can't believe all the negativism on this board. And i'm the one who listens to The Cure and Depeche Mode. I'm not lugging around any of your bucketful oftears. "Sellout" is just a conditioned response today...the word has lost it's meaning by being used as often as possible at the drop of a hat. You know it's a sellout long before you can say why and then when asked for specifics the stumbling begins. According to some on here Prince has been selling out for a while now....American Idol was a sellout, 3121 was a sellout....maybe if he had done the We Are The World sessions we could've called him on that too .....I'm not vulnerable to the "say it enough times makes it so".

I wouldn't get too worked up over the negative comments, because most of the fans here that criticize him so badly would jump at the opportunity if he came to their town to perform the next day after a Vegas performance, even if it was a day after they made the worse comments about him. See,they would show up with a big, phony "I love you Prince" smile in front of him, at his show and then run back to the boards the next day and talk bad about him again, lol it's a cycle, you just can't satisfy miserable people, it's pointless. lol

So I wouldn't worry about them, let them rant, they do have that freedom, because Prince will always be Prince, a music genius and unlike Prince, his worst critics will go unknown to the masses with no one really remembering or caring who the hell they are, and I'm sure he knows that and walks away with the last laugh everytime. All the negative criticism from fans about him performing in Vegas, still doesn't stop him from gaining new fans everyday, so look at it this way, his established fans who are upset and complain that he'll be performing in Vegas and don't want to go there to see him perform, will leave more room at the Vegas shows for us and Prince's new fans.lol

Not everyone who wants to will be able to jump at the opportunity to see Prince in Vegas. Only select fans who can afford it will be there. The new fans will have to be ones that can afford it too. Nothing against Prince playing in Vegas but Sin City is a $'s town.

Actually what I said was that the ones that criticize him the most for performing in Vegas would jump at the opportunity if he suddenly annnounced he was doing a show in their town right after a Vegas performance. Point is, no matter where he plays he will always be criticized by fans that expect more and more, it's just neverending, I'm sure he's used to it by now. So wherever he plays is fine with me, but that's just my opinion, and honestly can't speak for anyone else, that's why I said they have a right to rant, because you can't please everybody that would be impossible.

As far as Vegas being pricey, that depends on what you do with your money once you get there. If you like living large and want to spend more than you can afford just to showboat, then that's on the person, but if you're smart and budget your money when you get there and make a choice not to shop for things you can't afford or extra shows you can't afford, and choose places off the strip to eat, or choose an inexpensive fast food place on the strip to eat instead of choosing a pricey restaurant, then you'll be ok. It's up to the person, old or new fan, on how much they want to spend when they get there and how many Prince shows they can afford to see on the weekend they choose to go. As far as how many tickets anyone can afford for his shows, well that decision should be made before they arrive in Vegas, we all just have to learn how not to bite off more that we can chew no matter how badly we want something biggrin .
