It is called Humor. !!!!

Oh, as in ha-ha, this "real music by real musicians" will make you laugh? Didn't know Prince was into Weird Al type music-comedy. I'll have to go back and listen to my Prince discs and see if I can find that silly music he's become famous for.

Having a sense of humor is great. Prince teases the band, himself, and the audience regularly. Seeing him smile makes me smile. But the man's got way too many great songs and too little time to drop an extended throw-away like that on us.

If you liked it, cool. Perhaps you like the medleys too. I, for one, thought it was an undesirable break from an otherwise energetic display of "real music by real musicians." While I'm at it, I'd have preferred any of a hundred Prince originals to his rendition of "Satisfaction." But some may prefer him to do more covers, even it means he'll play less of his own music.

Sorry if you do not like this tour but I am pretty sure Prince said in numerous interviews before he started the tour that he would be trying to put in as many songs as possible and not performing the rauchier songs. I went to the show being aware of this. Maybe you should have done you homework. Besides the 20k people I saw him with went nuts when he did "No Diggity, No Doubt. I am not sure what you mean by referencing real music by real musicians.
The music was real enough for me .

i dont mind covers at aftershows or during hit & run tours but me thinks an official fullblown tour should be sans covers...

Yeah, I have to agree with that. Satisfaction is just a snooze of a song to me. We've heard it way too many times and Prince's version was still a snooze for me -- although it thematically made sense follwing the Rules-On the Couch sequence and he just played a verse or so.

I still admire Prince, I do believe that he's a wonderful musician/artist - but hoped he would make his final night more special ... I do know this - I'll never forget it, as my biggest let down concert wise. Don't get your panties all in a wad - I'm one person, who had expectations that were not met.

looks like you have totally ignored The Almighty Golden Rule of Princedom: expect nothing. if you go to any p-related function expecting things to happen, chances are your hopes will get shot down REAL fast. best you can do is just enjoy being there and make the best of things, instead of hoping for the world and only getting a piece of antarctica instead.

Well, considering this was the first time ever seeing Prince - or rather the first YEAR ever I guess I was not privy to the golden rule. LOL

I've had an great time - y'all are getting real nasty and still seem to miss MY point - MY expectations, MY let down, MY review - not yours or anyone elses. cool

It sucked in comparison to the night before - that is for sure! Just found out people met up at Pete's, but did PRINCE meet up with all of you? No one has mentioned that at all.

The last concert of the "tour" should have brought the house down, all it did was let me down, and in a bad way.

Okay - here goes:

We (party of six) arrived just before 9 (the normal time for Prince to go on) - he was already playing. THAT bummed us all out. Prince is notorious for being at least an hour late. Prince did not seem to have the same energy or love toward the crowd that he's had in the past few shows, including the night before where we didn't get out until after midnight.

Prince was not his normal funny self - or stage personality, whichever it really is. There was something lacking last night - besides the two hours of concert that we were cheated out of.

I still admire Prince, I do believe that he's a wonderful musician/artist - but hoped he would make his final night more special ... I do know this - I'll never forget it, as my biggest let down concert wise. Don't get your panties all in a wad - I'm one person, who had expectations that were not met.

It was great that tix went down to ten bucks so those who are on fixed incomes either by disability, unemployment or other reasons could afford to see Prince.

Edited for a more detailed review at 3:55 p.m. 9/12/04

I will never go to a "last night of the tour" concert again, I feel ripped off.
[Edited 9/12/04 15:57pm]

So let me get this straight. You show up late and you're pissed because Prince started the show before you got in the arena??? If the show was suppossed to start at 8pm and you showed up at 9pm, then the only thing I can say is " be an adult and take some responsibility for your own actions".

I wasn't at this particular show, but in case some of you all didn't know, Prince doesn't have "the best concert ever!" every single night. When you see Prince perform as many times as lots of us have seen him perform, you realize that some nights are just off nights. That's what happens when you have REAL musicians on stage and not some pre-recorded loop. On top of that, it sounds like your expectations for the "final" concert were perhaps a bit too high.

To put things into perspective, Prince has performed a concert tour that began in the Spring and darn near ended in the Fall with very, very few major breaks in between. In terms of endurance, the Musicology Tour was like running a marathon. Yet for reasons unkown to me, you're acting like you expected Prince to sprint full speed across the finish line. So yeah, I'd say your expectations were too high. Having said that, that doesn't mean that Prince didn't still have an off night too. But some of you all have seen Prince perform a million times and you still expect every performance to be the best ever. And that's just being totally unrealistic.
Amen...tell IT LIKE IT IS!!!

DAMN MAN! That ain't Prince's fault, thats YOUR negligence. I mean, yeah he has that rep, but do you REALLY want to take a chance of missing part of the concert cause of "his rep"? Come on man! You must like throwing money away. Now I'm a person who is ALWAYS late for anything, appointments, get-togethers, parties, etc, but if I'm dishing out $77 for ONE ticket, damn straight I'll get there early or ON TIME. Now, what I PERSONALLY hated was when you would be standing in HUGE pits like at the San Jose Event Center or the Fillmore for TWO HOURS before Prince would come out, standing, sweating in the hot ass pit. Now that sucks cause you feel like "damn, I should have just gotten here late! BUT with this tour, you get SEATS!! So you can sit your ass down, talk to your friends while you wait. Even better....have a beer or eat in the lobby, you don't even have to be in your seat waiting for him, JUST as long as you're in the venue so you don't miss anything. I hate raggin on ppl sometimes, but ppl deserve it when they put the blame on someone else for THEIR own mistakes.

This may be YOUR review, more like a rant. But you'll hearing our opinions on it.

I had a GREAT time. I saw Prince for the first time Thursday at Oakland, and the people around me were so inconsiderate, it almost ruined my night. But Saturday was awesome. I love love looooved Nikka Costa's special appearance. We were screaming - though NOBODY around us seemed to recognize her.

sosgemini (thanks for giving us rides, buddy! thumbs up!) and I were talking afterwards and damn, Purple Rain does seem to get shorter and shorter with each show. That much was disappointing. But, I'm still glad I got to go - too bad I didn't see any of you guys (Calhoun, where were you??)

I went to 4 shows on this tour...
3/29 (LA/staples)
6/3 w/ Sheila E opener (LA/staples)
9/5 (san diego)
9/11 (san jose)

in my humble opinion:

loudest crowd: opening night in LA, 3/29. Purple people were on fire. The sound hadn't been dialed in yet, and there were a few glitches in the set... but a super fun night. The acoustic set included "sometimes it snows in april". I wept. PR encore seemed like it went on 25 minutes.

best shows: 6/3 with Sheila E was so hot... on 9/5 in San Diego, i thought the band was tighter and Maceo was on a mission. San Diego and San Jose fans were not nearly as loud as LA...but Maceo was burnin' on 9/5. (I was shown dancin' like a banshee on the big screen that night too... although i was in NPG seats and couldnt see the screen)

Rhonda rules!

9/11 San Jose show's set list was almost identical to San Diego, with the exception of adding whole lotta love, raspberry beret and knock on wood. I was kinda disapppointed with PR as the sole encore, and also with having no opening act... but I danced like crazy all night regardless. John had a few shredding solos on drums...

Regrets: very few. Each show was awesome in its own way. There were a few old faves he never played... but all in all... I feel blessed to have been in the house so many times to see my idol.

anyone going on the Europe tour next spring?

Rant, rave, report, review - call it what you want. I'm not kissing anyones butt for sharing my opinion. I don't think I blamed anyone for my "own mistake" - it wasn't just me, it was five other people, one very disabled. SOOOOO - read what I wrote. Once again it's an opinion. I've stood in lines to see Prince, I've been early for every show I went to except this one. I'm not one to bail on friends - so when our friend took the wrong exit I pulled over and waited for her - obvioulsy I am a better friend than most. Most would have said "screw them" and kept on going. No matter - I'm done.

AMEN - me too, people just don't like the way I write it.
I know I've been blessed, and I'd do it all over again. Well, maybe I'd be a cold hearted bitch and leave my friends in San Francisco --- lost. NOT!

1) No need to kiss butt
2) Your opinion was nothing of the sort, it was a rant about YOUR mistake.
3) I agree, shit happens, okay your friend is handicapped and one other missed the exit, fine two good reasons to be late. So Prince should have come on late to wait for YOU guys to come?? I think not. You made it late, big deal. Next time, try showing up EARLIER. Giving enough time between getting to Point A and Point B is definitely neccesary as well as taking Traffic into consideration. BUT YOU ALREADY KNEW THAT, RIGHT? Considering you got there what a half hour or an HOUR late, you didn't do this...did you? You thought you could show up "fashionably" late and think "oh Prince won't start performing cause we're not there. Sorry man, world does not work like that.
4) Prince comes on when he comes on. I've stopped trying to predict what time he comes on and yes I've been to 7 concerts and he was late for more than half of them, I still got there on time, and caught the WHOLE show. Why?? Cause I didn't fuck around. Next time I suggest you do the same.
5) You are paying GOOD damn money to see him, what $77 to see his ass and if you got a girlfriend/wife, oh boy!! You are wiling to gamble your money away on thinking you know what may happen? Damn dude, do NOT EVER EVER EVER go to Vegas!

Point is, always be early no matter what!! Especially when you're spending good money on something. Don't cry if this happens again cause you've been warned!

I can understand your frustration.....BUT....Prince is known to be very unpredictable, (he does'nt have a "normal time") And since you only paid 10 bucks for your tickets, you should not feel "cheated". And in response to the love that he DID'NT show, he was probaly tired.....afterall.....he is human wink AND, please don't take offense to this reply, you were a good friend not to leave your friends behind. PEACE.
