September 11, 2004 review

It sucked in comparison to the night before - that is for sure! Just found out people met up at Pete's, but did PRINCE meet up with all of you? No one has mentioned that at all.

The last concert of the "tour" should have brought the house down, all it did was let me down, and in a bad way.

Okay - here goes:

We (party of six) arrived just before 9 (the normal time for Prince to go on) - he was already playing. THAT bummed us all out. Prince is notorious for being at least an hour late. Prince did not seem to have the same energy or love toward the crowd that he's had in the past few shows, including the night before where we didn't get out until after midnight.

Prince was not his normal funny self - or stage personality, whichever it really is. There was something lacking last night - besides the two hours of concert that we were cheated out of.

I still admire Prince, I do believe that he's a wonderful musician/artist - but hoped he would make his final night more special ... I do know this - I'll never forget it, as my biggest let down concert wise. Don't get your panties all in a wad - I'm one person, who had expectations that were not met.

It was great that tix went down to ten bucks so those who are on fixed incomes either by disability, unemployment or other reasons could afford to see Prince.

Edited for a more detailed review at 3:55 p.m. 9/12/04

I will never go to a "last night of the tour" concert again, I feel ripped off.

This isn't a review. You didn't tell us anything about the show. So why was it such a letdown?

In comparison to the 6/5 Staples Center show I went to, this show at the Pavilion was... I dunno, not as good. At Staples, everybody was standing for almost the whole show, except for a few slow jams, and I was on the third level! Last night, it seemed like sitting was all that people wanted to do (in comparison), even on the second level.

"A Whole Lotta Love" was pretty weak. Who was that girl that came out to sing really out of tune and do a horrible job of imitating robert plant. I was really shocked that Prince didn't sing, and he didn't even "kill the guitar".

But hey, it was a Prince show. It still rocked, and I was dancin' my ass off. He rocked it and cut loose in the beginning, with a crazy, crazy guitar solo... I think on Controversy. I liked how Pop Life and DMSR were in the setlist, but really really missed Adore, the Beautiful Ones, and Sometimes it Snows in April. The blues song with the rules was funny though, anyone know what it's called?

The roof did not exactly come down as Prince had said at the beginning of the show... and it wasn't exactly the absolute madness I anticipated for the last show of the Musicology tour, but all in all, the best 16 dollars I've ever spent on a show. Haha, gotta love it.

With a catalog and vault as deep as Prince's, why bother with a 5 minute ditty about the "rules" for "fellas?"

I think "the rules" is funny. It's a bit of a chavinistic view - but hey ... nothing wrong with that. Personally, I think the same way ... don't talk to me in the middle of a movie, don't bother me with petty stuff - just deal with it - you're GROWN. I'm a woman - and most men are the ones who need the rules. LOL

Noone opened the show, although Nikka Costa did come out and sing Whole Lotta Love during Prince's set. Overall, the show was not as good as others I have seen on the tour. First, this was the first show that I was not on floor (in fact, I was in the bleeders) and the sound sucked. The encore was only a short Purple Rain, unlike the three song encore he did in Oakland on Thursday. The band seemed a bit tired (who can blame them). Still, an off night for Prince and this band is, nevertheless, way better than most other concerts.

Prince did show up at the afterparty at Pete Escovedo's Latin Jazz Club (which is a great room). Chance, Pete Escovedo (wiping down the counter with a damp cloth), Juan Escovedo and Larry Grahm were also spotted. Prince did not play.

Pete always gets his hands dirty where his businesses are concerned. That is a man, with a family that is strong, strong, strong! Got to love them all!! My Grandma & Pete went way back, she loved him and Bobby very much. When she died Pete left a great message for us on legacy.com - he's a class act.

I'm not even going to ask about Prince - cuz I read elsewhere about his "behavior" ha.

Yay!! The San Jose show was hot! I copped a big-ass purple tee with "Prince" taken from the 1999 cover art. Loved the acoustic set, and "the rules" was hilarious!

Love hearin' Prince's jokes:

During "Alphabet St."...

so if u don't mind
i would like 2...
watch -- television.
lol

I loved hearing "Pop Life" in the set.

Gotta admit, while I was at the show I felt like askin':

"who here know about the org?" hehe

Alotta fun was had by all. smile And Prince was bustin some cute moves. love

This is not really a review, more of a feeling...

Made good time today, despite the roadwork on 880 trying to make me late! Parked in a good spot in case of aftershow (gotta get out QUICK)... Is that the tour bus? Gotta be, they're playing last nights show on the big screen in the back! There's Blackwell, damn I wanna hug this man for being so awesome! But he's on the phone, lemme get to will call... Row 6, not bad - wish I'd ordered w/ my DSL that day though mad How spoiled are we?? lol

whooooo-ooooo-oo-oo-oooo
whooooo-ooooo-ooo-oo
whooooo-ooooo-o-oo-oo

Yea, still hearing that in my head from last night... Sat w/ a friend in a different section until the show started. Lights, "Call My Name" video, I head to my seat. Got caught up in the "you can't pass here" zone b/c they were bringing them out. Saw the black box pass by, the band walks up, they let folks pass until a few straglers are still coming. I dash across anyway, the security guy pushes me REALLY hard. I know he's just trying to do his job but I'm trying to get to my seat, not reach out to touch somebody 8 feet away. Whatever, shake it off, get to the seat...

Show starts, I sing my head off, no drunks around me thank goodness (sorry for all y'all w/ the puke breath stories, that s**t is revolting!!).

"I'm gon' tear this roof off tonight!!!"

I believe him. I know I'm in for it. He's gonna kick my guts out tonight & I CAN'T WAIT!!!

Good job by the girl who had the "dance contest" w/ Prince, I would have froze like that girl from Friday!! lol

Hmmm... short acoustic set - aftershow, yes?? biggrin MAYBE... glad he did The Rules - better for my friend to hear it first hand than my rendition of it lol

Again, "7" took me away. The only thing that could have topped it is launching into "Mountains" immediately after (not a bad idea, Princey - do it in Europe smile )

Encore time - no "Call My Name", no "Beautiful Ones" Straight into "PR" Hmmm... short encore, the roof is still on this mutha... HE'S SAVING IT UP FOR THE AFTER SHOW!!! Okay, now I'm officially giddy! mr.green

whooooo-ooooo-oo-oo-oooo
whooooo-ooooo-ooo-oo
whooooo-ooooo-o-oo-oo

Again, felt SO good to sing, could have done it all night. I don't bolt for the door before he's done, can never leave before he's finished (don't understand those who can - are ya crazy??). He says goodbye to all sides of the stage, gives lucky LUCKY Iceprincess the hanky, I wish I were her... Okay, I make it to the car, change in the car lol (gotta get comfortable, I'm in for a long night) We hit Escovedo's, didn't have to pay for parking - good sign!

Not too far back in the line, looks good. They say he'll definitely be here & will probably play. I let myself believe it. No Red Bull, no caffeine, just pure adrenaline is gonna get me through the night b/c I want it SO BAD. They let us in, $25 a head - bad sign, but I ignore it. OOOOH, there's still space by the stage!!! Got my water, I'm near the stage, I'm COOL 8)

Nothing is set up confused Ehhh, maybe the crew is eating or something. Plus I saw a guy fiddling w/ some cords when I first came in, they'll get it going soon... smile

They're showing Curious George (I think) & X Men on a screen on the stage  Ehhh, they're just making sure it's working - they'll pop the concert dvd in any second. smile

He's on his way!! mr.green Aww man, I cannot wait. I want this aftershow more than anything! He's in the Bay, he didn't do one last time but apologized for it - so there's simply NO WAY he can end the tour without it!! mr.green mr.green mr.green But wouldn't it be just like Prince to get me THIS hot & leave me THIS frustrated??? eek NAAAAH, he ain't gon' do that - it'd just be cruel! razz

He's wearing white sad Uh oh, he came to stay clean... not get dirty cry But I STILL keep hoping like a moron. And the pretend dj plays the same 10 songs over & over with 10 second gaps inbetween, and the X Men movie is still playing, and nothing is set up, and I'm tired of dancing to "Flashlight" already. And I know it's not gonna happen. I apologize to my friend for juicing her up so much, it looked so likely.

Then "Celebration" by Kool & the Gang comes on. My funk face comes on (wtf are they playing THIS for? do they want us to leave??) And the lights come on. And an announcement comes over the loud speaker, not the kick in the gut I wanted. They booted us. 'Twas a LONG drive back to Oakland that night.

I wish I'd just blown off the idea of an aftershow & just gone home high on...

whooooo-ooooo-oo-oo-oooo
whooooo-ooooo-ooo-oo
whooooo-ooooo-o-oo-oo

... but I let myself believe the hype in my head. I know it ain't nobody's fault, there was never a promise for him to play. I know I'm the greediest (sp?) girl in the world right now for even wanting more after 3 back to back shows, 8 shows total this year. This has been a truly AMAZING year for us!!! But I still have the nerve to want MORE. I wanted him to break me in half that night, but no dice. It even looked like they were discussing the stage b/c they kept pointing to it, talking to different people. Then I'd see staff running around... but nah...

Heard he popped into some club in SF Thursday night after the show, don't know if it's true or not. Heard he played Friday night @ Escovedo's & jammed w/ the whole family, didn't know about it.

I know I'm greedy & selfish. There's just nothing better than standing @ the edge of his stage. And I can't get enough. Maybe it's all a plan to keep us salivating lol But I do that anyway just at the thought.

THANK YOU all for an amazing year. I'll be reading reviews from Europe, and salivating lol , and looking forward to my next experience. Interesting way to go out, glad I took the ride.

Lemme go, I got tears to wipe away. They're good tears though pout
heart prince I never met you, but I LOVE you & I will forever!! Thank you for being YOU - my little Princey, the best to EVER do it prince heart

It was great that tix went down to ten bucks so those who are on fixed incomes either by disability, unemployment or other reasons could afford to see Prince.

So let me get this straight. You show up late and you're pissed because Prince started the show before you got in the arena??? If the show was suppossed to start at 8pm and you showed up at 9pm, then the only thing I can say is " be an adult and take some responsibility for your own actions".

I wasn't at this particular show, but in case some of you all didn't know, Prince doesn't have "the best concert ever!" every single night. When you see Prince perform as many times as lots of us have seen him perform, you realize that some nights are just off nights. That's what happens when you have REAL musicians on stage and not some pre-recorded loop. On top of that, it sounds like your expectations for the "final" concert were perhaps a bit too high.

To put things into perspective, Prince has performed a concert tour that began in the Spring and darn near ended in the Fall with very, very few major breaks in between. In terms of endurance, the Musicology Tour was like running a marathon. Yet for reasons unkown to me, you're acting like you expected Prince to sprint full speed across the finish line. So yeah, I'd say your expectations were too high. Having said that, that doesn't mean that Prince didn't still have an off night too. But some of you all have seen Prince perform a million times and you still expect every performance to be the best ever. And that's just being totally unrealistic.

My ticket said 7:30 p.m., and I was at the arena at 5 p.m. to get in the doors without problem at 6:30. Traffic was a cinch in Seattle when my friend and I drove into town, even with all the rush hour mess. One thing I found out about Prince fans is how leisurely they can be in making their way to the shows because KeyArena wasn't even close to half capacity when the doors opened, but you can bet by 8 p.m., everybody was there and there were no empty seats in the house. (I was hoping for an opener with The Time, but it didn't happen - either way, it was cool.) Don't really understand why you got in your seats at 9, but that's not Prince's fault. That's like getting pissed at a teacher when you were the one who showed up late for a test. Next time: plan ahead.

Hey Stax - no disrespect was taken about Pete. I still think it's great that as classy as the man is, he still works hard you know? My family have all been close with the Escovedo's - I kept my distance unless I was with my Grandma, Mom or Aunt's. Being friends with famous people can be distracting I'm sure. I prefer not to have friends calling and saying "hey you know Pete can you get him to play at my party" and all that crap that my family had to deal with.

I like to respect and admire the entire family from a distance. They're truly devoted to one another - unlike any family I've ever met, famous or not.

Take care!

8:00

No need to get all smart on me. I've been to four concerts on the Musicology tour - and the first one was to start at 7:30 - started after 9:00 - the second was to start at 8, but started after 9, and the third, Nikka Costa came on a little after 8 - sooooo - since Prince has been at LEAST an hour LATE for EVERY concert - the assumption was he'd be late for his last performance as well.

Bummed ... that's it.

HELLO? There is no need to be rude, it's MY review, not yours. Yeah, I did show up late, I'd been early to all of the other shows and seriously sitting around and waiting bores me. Being "late" wasn't a plan, it had to do with the party, my friend taking the wrong exit and traffic issues. As for being an adult, and being responsible - are you F-ING kidding me? Where is YOUR review? How did you feel? Why rip on me for my review - it isn't in print in a paper, it's here - and no one else had posted one so I did.

Yeah, I think my expectations were a little high - considering the first concert was awesome, the second was as well and the third was off the charts - I did have high expectations for the last night. It's my right to have an expectation - and I do know by having higher expectations than others I can be let down - and it's no ones fault but mine. I am not a six year old brat, I am an adult with plenty of life experience. As for "real" musicians and "pre recorded loop" NO SHIT! I did not go to see Madonna, Brittney, Usher, or any of those other so called artists because I don't like that type of venue. WE all have off days/nights - and that is understandable. The more I write to you, the more pissed I get - YOU have a very pompous attitude and I've yet to read your review.

To put things into perspective, Prince has performed a concert tour that began in the Spring and darn near ended in the Fall with very, very few major breaks in between. Reasons unkown to you ... and who exactly are you? Are you someone who knows me? Or just a person who decided they didn't agree with MY OPINION and decided to make an attempt to belittle me for my personal feelings and expectations? I believe you are the latter. For the record I am not "some of you all" nor have I seen Prince perform "a million times" - as for "just being totally unrealistic" - that is YOUR opinion, and by all means you can have it. You should post your own review since you did not like mine. I never said I didn't like Prince, or didn't enjoy the show, just that I expected more for the "last" night of the tour. I'm not that far off in my expectations - others have felt and expressed my same sentiments in private emails. Some may fear voicing their opinion here because someone may attack them for how they felt, or what they expected. For my family who had never seen Prince they were in awe and thought he put on a great concert. I agree, it just wasn't up to MY PERSONAL expectations. No big federal case - just an OPINION - and like assholes, we all have them.

Okay, now I'm officially giddy! mr.green

I wish I'd just blown off the idea of an aftershow & just gone home high on...

... but I let myself believe the hype in my head.

Ooooooh, I am so glad I was not the only person with "high expectations"
Sorry P didn't hit it at the club. Like Future Shock says "blah, blah, blah, blah" LOL

I'm with you though - hopefully you won't get ripped by Future Shock for having an opinion a bit off from theirs. smile

At least you got to see the last show...I am not surprised that he was tired as long as he was touring..[/quote]

That's true 2elijah - I'm grateful for it, it was a lesson, one I'll never forget.

I've had the best summer of my life - took my sis and nephew to Disneyland (surely the last time I'll go with my illness) and saw Prince live four times. If I died today, I will have died a happy woman.

If it wasn't for the ten dollar tix we would not have been there for his "last" U.S. show.

[b][i] Wow, a lot of hate going on up in this area. Let me set you straight on MY PERSONAL experiences with the Musicology tour:

June 3rd, got there three hours early, had dinner in the restaurant, in our seats by 7:00 - ticket time 7:30, concert started at a little after 9 p.m. (most people were still wandering out of the arena when the concert started)

September 3rd, got there at 5 p.m., p/u tix at will call, went back out to pay for parking (unlike some others) - parked, sat up in the shade by the Kings retail store only to be shuffled with all the rest down the ramp to wait in line. I got out of line, no need to be standing there for hours. Doors opened a little after 7, we went in, walked around a bit, went to our seats, got some drinks and talked with people around us, concert started at 9:00 (people were NOT in their seats by 8 p.m.) some not even until AFTER Prince started.

September 10, got there at 4:30, p/u tix, drove around San Jose for a while, went back, parked, had dinner in the restaurant, concert started a bit after 8 p.m. with Nikka Costa opening - Prince came on after 9 p.m. (the only seats full were the floor seats, the rest were scattered with emptiness)

SOOOOO - let us talk about Prince fans being "leisurely" - if anyone takes their time it is "the artist" himself, which is all good - but let's be consistant with our leisurely attitude. Don't go switching it up on the last night ... so let me clear it all up for you - YEAH - I was late, so were a bunch of other people. We were in box seats due to our party having disabilities and no elevator access to the upper level where OUR seats were located. We were able to view a lot of empty seats that were filling up by around 9:45. So, the seats at HP were NOT full by the time Prince came on - I know this because when we were seated there were still a lot of empty seats.

So, my dear, I did plan ahead. I planned to leave at 6 p.m. - but sadly we were having a 16th birthday party at my house and had to wait for the arrival of parents, then my disabled Mom needed to take her meds and use the restroom, we needed to help her get changed - and by the time we left it was an hour and a few minutes later then PLANNED. Shit happens, and we deal with it.

My review was MINE - my expectations, MY let down, MY review - not yours. YOU don't know me, and you never will - I am NEVER late for appointments, in fact I'm usually at least 20 minutes early. Sadly, things in life can cause problems, life happens, we live it and go with the flow - I have a right to voice my opinion, and what my expectations were.

What don't you people get about reviews? So many of you seem like evil pompous punks to me - but I know you're all really cool Prince fans who seem to have climbed to a higher level of authority and knowledge about how to avoid life and it's obstacles no matter how well you PLAN AHEAD. If we could all be perfect the world would be oh so boring!

I was at Pete's too! I got to shake hands with Maceo and Greg, Candy waved at me (after I waved at her and blew her a kiss) and just had a great night overall! Of course I wish the man would have played, but I had a great time shaking my groove thing all night both at the concert and at Pete's!

I still admire Prince, I do believe that he's a wonderful musician/artist - but hoped he would make his final night more special ... I do know this - I'll never forget it, as my biggest let down concert wise. Don't get your panties all in a wad - I'm one person, who had expectations that were not met.

looks like you have totally ignored The Almighty Golden Rule of Princedom: expect nothing. if you go to any p-related function expecting things to happen, chances are your hopes will get shot down REAL fast. best you can do is just enjoy being there and make the best of things, instead of hoping for the world and only getting a piece of antarctica instead.

It is called Humor. !!!!

Oh, as in ha-ha, this "real music by real musicians" will make you laugh? Didn't know Prince was into Weird Al type music-comedy. I'll have to go back and listen to my Prince discs and see if I can find that silly music he's become famous for.

Having a sense of humor is great. Prince teases the band, himself, and the audience regularly. Seeing him smile makes me smile. But the man's got way too many great songs and too little time to drop an extended throw-away like that on us.

If you liked it, cool. Perhaps you like the medleys too. I, for one, thought it was an undesirable break from an otherwise energetic display of "real music by real musicians." While I'm at it, I'd have preferred any of a hundred Prince originals to his rendition of "Satisfaction." But some may prefer him to do more covers, even it means he'll play less of his own music.
