Kelly Marie Tran, Star Wars' Rose Tico, addresses critics

I still don't know the furor around her in general or why she was so specifically targeted unless it's just blatant racism. She deleted her Instagram over the summer because of harassment. Now, she is speaking out in an essay for the NY Times.

The same feeling I had when at 9, I stopped speaking Vietnamese altogether because I was tired of hearing other kids mock me. Or at 17, when at dinner with my white boyfriend and his family, I ordered a meal in perfect English, to the surprise of the waitress, who exclaimed, “Wow, it’s so cute that you have an exchange student!”

Their words reinforced a narrative I had heard my whole life: that I was “other,” that I didn’t belong, that I wasn’t good enough, simply because I wasn’t like them. And that feeling, I realize now, was, and is, shame, a shame for the things that made me different, a shame for the culture from which I came from. And to me, the most disappointing thing was that I felt it at all.

I had been brainwashed into believing that my existence was limited to the boundaries of another person’s approval. I had been tricked into thinking that my body was not my own, that I was beautiful only if someone else believed it, regardless of my own opinion. I had been told and retold this by everyone: by the media, by Hollywood, by companies that profited from my insecurities, manipulating me so that I would buy their clothes, their makeup, their shoes, in order to fill a void that was perpetuated by them in the first place.

You might know me as Kelly.

I am the first woman of color to have a leading role in a “Star Wars” movie.

I am the first Asian woman to appear on the cover of Vanity Fair.

My real name is Loan. And I am just getting started.

For me, it has nothing to do with her being Asian.....it's that her character (along with Finn & Emo Vader) was poorly written and flat out sucked (along with Finn, Emo Vader, Holdo & Snoke).

Well, that's even dumber. She didn't write the script, she accepted the job. Why did critics not go after the writers instead of the actors?

It's like a wife being mad at the other woman. It's the husband who's cheating. Be mad at the source.

And yet Boba Fett is considered to be one of Star Wars' best characters. Or at least, he's a fan favourite. And this is despite his character being poorly written and actually doing fuck all.

The sad fact is that even before the movie came out, a lot of Star Wars "fans" had already made up their minds to hate it. And when they seen that it had been almost universally praised by critics they took out their disappointment on the cast. "Oh, she was only hired because she was Asian. He's only there because he's black. Why is the lead character female? I hate this enforced diversity". And not once did any of them stop and wonder why they were so angry over a silly, sci fi/fantasy movie series aimed at children.

That is the same reason for the hate of Jake Llyod and Hayden Christensen

I'm not totally agreeing with that. Hayden acting was horrible. Tran's wasn't. Hayden is a white male (something that permeates Star Wars), Tran is a Vietnamese female. Anyone else could have been 100x better in the role of Anakin.

I seen an interview with Ewan MacGregor where he was defending Hayden Christensen's delivery in Episode 2 and 3. He said that there were much better takes but George Lucas insisted on him redoing it to try capture James Earl Jones' "speech pattern" despite Hayden clearly struggling with it. Now, he could just be trying to defend his fellow actor but if his account is to be believed, George Lucas was as much to blame for the bad acting as anyone. The shit script he wrote didn't exactly help either.

Yep, bad all around. I'm a black male, so it's not about her being Vietnamese.

I do but they need to actually do something. Anything! Not just show up, pretend to be tough and then get eaten by a big plant or something. (it's been a while since I seen them but I think that's what happens.)

Sorry, but the movie could have been scripted as well as the The Godfather or Casablanca and she could been as good as Meryl Streep and it still would not made a difference to some of the folks that went after Tran on social media.

There were people that hated her character and the film (such as some of the folks on here) . . .

Aaaand . . . there were people that hated that she played the character in the (such as some of the folks that went after Tran).

Both can be true.

Yeah his death scene did sucked. Maybe we will get more of a back story if they make more Solo movies.

I heard the same rumblings. But after Solo kind of flopped I imagine they'll be less likely to move ahead with it. Besides, of all the characters who deserve a spin off, I'm not sure if Boba Fett is anywhere near the top of that list.

I think it would be better if it was a Solo/Boba Fett movie, throw in Jabba the Hutt.

definitely doable. It would beef up the Solo storyline. I liked Solo, despite people pooping on it. But yeah, Fett & Jabba in it. That'd be sweet.

Ah, Boba Fett is right at the top of my list of Star Wars characters who deserve a spin-off - for exactly the reasons you mentioned earlier. Great potential, barely featured.

Never cared for her character in the movie because she seemed like some rushed filler character who could have been left easily out of the movie.
If she's in Episode IX I hope they flesh her character out and do the same for Finn who I loved in Episode VII and than was pretty useless and wasted in Episode VIII.
Still a great movie though.

I didn't sense any potential in him. He looks cool but other than that, what did he offer? His "father" deserves a spin off more than he does.

I've read that to. And pretty much everyone who was awful acting wise in the SW prequels I've seen performing in other films and they're really good ... so the blame has to lay with Lucas for his script, the direction he gave the actors, and his choice of takes to use in the final edit.

Having said that, Star Wars has one of the most toxic minorities amongst its fandom ... neck bearded morons who treat this stuff like the world would end if someone wields the wrong colour lightsabre. Thankfully they seem to be outnumbered by the decent SW fans but some of the c*nty ones are pretty vocal (especially when bravely hiding behind an online alias!) hence situations like the unnecessary abuse that folks like Rian Johnson and Kelly Marie Tran have had to put up with.

Its just a popcorn movie at the end of the day ... some folks need to chow down on a massive perspective sandwich.

I think they parked this idea (and other Star Wars stories movies) for the moment when Solo underperformed/bombed. I think James Mangold (Logan) was attached to do the Boba Fett movie.

It really wasn't a bad movie. But you can't replace Han Solo.

They should have started with Boba Fett or Obi-Wan.

The cameo in Solo was a clear indication to me that Obi-Wan would have been next.
