Intermittent Fasting: The Science is Growing

i think this is really interesting. is it pssible that the traditional 'three meals a day' plan can be altered? this is a good discussion weighing the pros and cons

https://www.medpagetoday.com/primarycare/dietnutrition/70663

excerpted from link above:

A systematic review by Seimon et al. in 2015 considered 12 clinical trials and concluded, "Intermittent fasting thus represents a valid -- albeit apparently not superior -- option to continuous energy restriction for weight loss." The entire review, which considered effects on appetite and metabolism, identified 72 potentially relevant publications, which were refined to 40 publications from 32 clinical studies.

In the more recent American Heart Association statement by St-Onge et al. in 2017, the authors wrote: "There is evidence that both alternate-day fasting and periodic fasting may be effective for weight loss, although there are no data that indicate whether the weight loss can be sustained long term." The 2017 clinical study by Tr...ski et al., reviewed by Kamath, came to a similar conclusion, albeit more conservatively stated.

I've never been overweight so maybe I'm not the best person to comment on this but I DO eat a lot. Like, I have 5 meals a day. Five! In between meals I'm always snacking too. It all depends on WHAT you eat. Cutting out sweets and fried foods and doing even a small amount of exercise is all anyone really needs to lose weight.

My ex was around 20 stone when I met him first and he'd never even tried to lose weight until the doctor advised him to. In 5 months of him eating what I ate, when I ate it, he lost 4 stone. He's down to around 14 stone now. And this is a guy with absolutely zero willpower who even now considers exercise to be "evil".

Fad diets and strict exercise regimes are a load of bollocks. Cut down on the grease and bread and you'll lose weight. It's not rocket science.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to have a bacon sandwich smile

The "bollocks" part was to set up the joke about the bacon sandwich. I wasn't serious about it.

But I DO believe that eating the right foods regularly is better than eating the wrong foods semi-regularly.

I've never believed in the fasting theory as a weight loss mechanism. Fasting slows down the metabolism. it triggers the body to hold on to the food stores inside. Prolonged fasting can lead to muscle-wasting because the human body needs protein to survive.

I've been at most 20-30 lbs overweight up and down throughought the years. Three years ago I told myself I was not going to diet any more. I was going to make myself as healthy as possible for the rest of my life. I'm addicted to FitBit and do the simplest items to get myself moving. I was on Weight Watchers because it was free with my employer...that helped a lot with the food choices. And thats all it is....food choices. No food is good or bad. Deprivation leads to failure. I've lost 30 lbs and have kept it off for 2 years.

Hey Em, here in the states we call it a BLT. Tastes great with fresh New Jersey tomatoes!

There's nothing wrong with occasional fasting but to use it as a device to lose weight is unhealthy and can be dangerous in some cases.

I just use the bacon. No lettuce or tomatoes for me. Just 2 or 3 thick cut juicy pieces of bacon. The kind of bacon that you can feel entering your bloodstream and just waiting there to kill you when you least expect it.

I'm fucking starving now... smile

I actually skip meals sometimes because it helps with some errr health challenges. But I never did it to lose weight; interestingly though, when food prices got so high I started cutting a lot of junk food and prepared foods out of my diet and the pounds just fell off and never came back. My frurgal home-prepared meals have paid off in the long-run...
