Seriously KB, hang in there man. This year's flu ain't messing around...

A somewhat quick, short story.

I'm glad you brought up a topic that is very important, not only during this flu season, but for people facing continuing health issues--DON'T SLACK OFF ON YOUR MEDICAL TREATMENT! For people who have diabetes, high blood pressure, and other issues like auto-immune diseases, they are more susceptible to the dire consequences of flu epidemics and others than the general population. You mentioned you stopped taking your meds (I assume for diabetes, high blood pressure, etc.). Please don't. My late best friend who passed away two years ago had diabetes and high blood pressure, assumed after she "reversed" diabetes (her blood sugar and blood pressure went back to normal levels) that she could stop taking the meds and go back to her old health habits. She stopped taking them, didn't see the doctor, and suddenly passed away at the age of 54. Don't do this, please. I still miss her. Take care of your health, folks.

Man, so sad to hear about your friend. Its tough when a person dies from a somewhat preventable disease(s). Especially when the person is fairly young... hug

I think for me, I've been in denial about my health problems. Up until recently the symptoms(and test results) from my diabetes HBP and a few other health issues weren't super bad. Around 7 years ago i was diagnosed as diabetic, and around 15 years ago as having HBP. However, me being somewhat reckless and thinking i was indestructible, thought i could get away with doing just the bare minimum in treating my conditions. I was real sporadic in taking any of the prescribed medications. It's like I'd take my HPB & DB meds for three months, then not take them for two, then take them for three, etc. Or, i would eat fast food and drink sugary drinks(sporadic as well, but i did do it), knowing that that type of stuff is death for people with DB and HBP. Plus i used to work out quite a bit, so i assumed that things would balance out(which they didn't). And since i wasn't diagnosed as having a "major disease" like Cancer, then i figured my life wasn't at stake. Not totally comprehending though, that diabetes and HBP(or other chronic diseases) do contribute to a lot of early deaths. Diabetes runs in my family so i should have known better. I took youth for granted. Not really thinking that a 50 year old body wont be as resilient as a 30 something yo body.

Anyway, the point I'm trying to make(basically the same one as Purplethunder) is mainly directed at people in their early 30's(or younger) and who have ANY kind of chronic health condition(s). And that point is, that, with age, halfhearted attempts at treating a health condition usually will not work. Your problem probably wont get better on it's own. It will probably get worse. So don't take shit for granted. Go full on from the get go. See your doctor, take your meds, be informed about you condition(including medication side effects), get(stay)active, stay away from processed foods and excess sugar(those shits are DEATH), etc etc. You don't wanna make a choice at age 25 that leads you to getting your foot amputated(because of diabetes) at 50.

As for my situation. Because my blood pressure has been so high for so long, I'm lucky that i haven't had a stroke yet. And the diabetes? Well, i know that my eyesight is getting worse...So the damage is done...Even if things don't get any worse, I'm still going to have a reduced quality of life because of poor choices i made in my 30's and 40's...And that's hella stupid on my part.

It's the luck of the draw--my ex-husband's father smoked for 60 years...and passed away from cancer unrelated to cigarettes in his late 80s. It's a health-crap-shoot really...if you wanna take your chances...

It's not "the luck of the draw". Your chances of getting (all kinds of) cancer go way up if you smoke, or use tobacco in any way, shape or form.

"Luck of the draw" would mean your chances of getting cancer are the same whether you smoke or not. But that's not the case. Smokers are far more likely to get cancer than non-smokers.
