Possible stray cat - help/advice please

Two months ago I was woken up by scratching and miowing at the kitchen door. The tamest most friendly cat then entered my house. She made me late for work. I gave her tuna and water incase she was a stray.

Since then she visits every couple of days usually at night for a few hours. Today she presented at ten a.m I let her stay til 12 then put her out. Returned at one and she ran through the front door behind me. She left at 5 then came through a window at 6.irs now 730 and she has come for lap cuddles and wants to be carried. Currently it's 735 in London and I think it's nearing zero outside. I assume she has a home but I am not 100 percent sure but she is well groomed. Currently she is sleeping next to me in a blanket, purring.

She expresses no desire to leave and keeps returning. Do I put her out anyway in case she has an owner or do I wait for her lead? It's so cold I worry for her and I can't get to a vet tonight to get her chip read.

Until she turned up that day I had never even touched a cat!! Please advise!

take a picture of her and post it on your social media page, and on your local animal shelter page if possible. a lot of lost pets are being reunited with their owners this way, following the hurricane season. good luck, i hope she finds her way home.

That cat probably has a wife and kids somewhere and is just there for the free tuna. Cut the tuna off, no more freddie freeloader.

Sounds like it.

If it has an owner it'll let you know when it's ready to leave, if not, you have a cat.

Awwww! I'm female - glad you're in my page how could anyone not care especially when the animal literally walks through your door! It's 4 degrees right now and she is good as gold wrapped in a blanket on the sofa fast asleep. She's the most beautiful cat. It's gone midnight now so will see if she wakes us before the morning to go out. It's just me and my husband here so she should have a good sleep I hope.

Well, if the cat has an caregiver, they obviously don't give a rat's behind about the cat or else it wouldn't be roaming like that. I say, keep the cat. If it truly does have an owner who cares about it, they will make an effort to find the cat. Otherwise, the cat is yours. She chose you. biggrin

You could also put up a few flyers around the neighborhood in public spaces? Maybe the owner - if there is an owner - will see it. Good luck. Ihope it all works out for the best for all parties. Sounds like you have a natural knack for being a kitty mama wink

Hi all!

Thank you so much for all of this, I am not a member of any boards and was a member of the org back in 02/04 and just knew this was the place to go!

So, update! Little kitty woke us at 630am miowing, slept through the night in her little blanket. Fed her and she wolfed it down. She came for cuddles and had a little walk and then I opened the backdoor and she Sat looking out which she does and I left her alone and she left. I came back and called and she came back for a cuddle then I left her and she left. Ten thirty am she comes back miowing at the front door cane shooting in with mud on her face begging for food. I've fed her and she's still hungry. Not as thirsty as yesterday. She's currently in the kitchen staring at... Nothing. Very cuddly. In an hour will leave door open see what happens.

Side note - she has not acknowledged litter box although I put her paws in it... She made no mess last night but does she know what it is? How does one tell??

Here she is, I took a picture to show you. Think I might go down the collar route as not sure I want to put pics up round the neighbourhood and she would certainly go home at some point as I always offer her to go out and that's straight to source. Going to put my number on her collar so they call me. A little part of me wants her for me as I love her but you can't steal someone's cat so I am viewing myself as a foster momma unless noone replies to the collar!

She's lovely. And looks happy! The decision may be out of your hands as it seems she may have picked you.
The other thing i was going to mention is that if someone is missing her surely they would be putting information out there if they were searching for her. She almost looks too pretty and seems too friendly to be a stray but perhaps she was one of many and decided it was too crowded where she was.
About the litter box. I wonder if the reason she leaves briefly is to do her business outdoors? Which would very likely mean she is a stray - or at least not likely a house pet. Every cat i have had only needed to be shown the litter box and that was that. They immediately took to it and seem to instinctively know what to do. Im surprised she didnt use it and obviously saved it for outdoors.
Do you live in or near a rural area? Perhaps she was a farm cat and decided she wanted an upgrade in lifestyle so she struck out in search of greener pastures and found you!

i can't help with your questions about cats (i have birds) but wanted to warn you (how generous of me eh? lol); there are people in the world who attack free-roaming cats, here in america and in the UK. please keep an eye on her rambles, if you are able. thank you, that is all the free advice i will hand out today. possibly

As long as the cat isn't pissing and pooping all over your place, you can be rest assured it isn't a FERAL cat.

Likely it was from a household and was either lost, or misplaced.

Growing up, we'd typically train cats to use the outside to do "their business", and it wasn't until they were old and senile that they'd do anything else. (Unless a cardboard box was left around/or the cat felt evil and pissed on something precious; i.e. my new boots)

There ARE some things that will bring out feral behavior.

Anyways, here's a situation:

**is the cat prego?

Sometimes cats will scour around looking for somewhere safe and compact to "nest" just before giving birth. A crawl space, a closet, etc.

If this kitty has been plugged and is soon to give birth, she may have chosen you got a habitat

I'd keep it, i love cats though and am always getting approached by them whether they are stray or not. I feed a homeless cat every night, it's not feral but it won't let you touch it, I also just took in another cat after a customer of mine (I help people move) left it, it's a great cat. Cats are magical creatures, the homeless one i go to feed every night is old, been feeding it for a long time. First when i lived at this apt. then i got kicked out and stopped feeding it, i felt guilty for years about it but just assumed the cat was dead, i drove by the apt 3 years ago and there it was just chilling, so i started feeding it again. a couple weeks ago, it went missing for about a week, i almost gave up and stopped going by figuring it finally died (it's at least 12 years old, probably older, blind) but last week i drove by right when i was about to stop coming by, something told me to come by again, and there it was, waiting for it's food. it's true, cats have 9 lives.

update!!

sooo he (yes he)!! belonged to a neighbour - vet checked his chip, neighbour was all apologetic (never even seen this neighbour in my life so made a friend there which is always nice)

I have since adopted a stray from a shelter and he is wonderful!

And as I type the two cats are in my kitchen eating food - they have become buddies!!

Thank you all! x
