The people who went to see the likes of Jaws, Star Wars and the Christopher Reeve Superman movies in the cinema are likely old now. If they enjoyed those movies when they were younger, why can't they enjoy Wonder Woman and other modern movies like that now?
There used to be more variety so people that liked Mysteries, Crime Thrillers, non-R rated comedies, historical fiction, war movies etc could go on a regular basis. Now most movies are superhero or horror films.
I agree with you about the comedies, they are getting more raunchy/sexual and I find them not funny at all. Well Dunkirk is coming out this summer

And yet the Emmy's and Oscars don't have any categories for best Sci-Fi TV/Movie award |

Don't like my horror movies coming out in the summer. Like them coming out towards the end of the year around Halloween time. |

LOL. I can very much appreciate that. Allow me to attempt a slightly different, less out-of-the-blue tact (not so bleeding philosophical). There are a lot of cool, really intelligent people to learn from around here on countless topics, even if much of the time it can be rather chaotic and demeaning.
every time you post, i step back and think 'i wish i could talk like that!' You're very kind. It is most appreciated! And you're far too humble about your own speaking/writing/thinking voice. I'm quietly absorbing and wishing it could all be something close to that. I'd be much wiser for it. |

In addition to sci fi being over looked by the television academy, Emmy voters don't really have time to watch much TV (according to podcasts from people in the industry). There are always a ton of good shows that gets overlooked while long in the tooth shows like Modern Family and Downton Abbey (until it recently concluded) keep getting nominated. On the other hand, I wouldn't want to see good but not great scifi films like The Force Awakens winning any kind of best picture Oscar.

There are still good non-action based movies being made that appeal to people who don't like super heroes, sci-fi, horror, action movies. Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Tarantino, Christopher Nolan etc have made some great movies over the last few years and they've got some great looking movies on the horizon. And there are lots of great, under the radar movies that's come out over the last 10 years. The problem is not that these movies aren't getting made, it's just that they're not advertised to the same degree as the bigger movies.
There's many casual movie goers that don't want the prestigious films those directors are making. They should but they still feel there's nothing for them anymore and there used to be more for everybody.

My point was that those directors (with the exception of Nolan) don't make superhero movies or the kind of run of the mill action/horror/comedy movies that are heavily marketed. But they're not the only directors making different kinds of movies. I go to the cinema at least twice a week, every week and I'm never stuck for something to see despite me avoiding any movies featuring The Rock or awful looking horrors or r rated "comedies" with Will Ferrell, Adam Sandler, Amy Schumer etc. I don't believe there are less great movies for older audiences around now, I just think they are drowned out for the most part by the bigger budget releases but they are still being made. |

Went to a screening sunday and I liked it... Wasn't as awesome as I hoped but more tense than expected... The music is, again, ON POINT with the cinematography... It's short for a Nolan movie but that doesn't matter for once, it's a tense ride that doesn't need 2+ hours to be effective... But still "The Prestige" remains his best effort...

I am not a youngling, (50s) and my favorite movie genre is sci-fi/fantasy. Those are the movies that will get me into the theatre. The majority of the other flicks I will wait until it hits ONdemand or something. I love....
Star Trek
Star Wars
LOTR
Harry Potter
Xmen
Avengers
Transormers
Batman
Superman
Spiderman
To name a few.
The only movie outside of the genre I went to see in a theatre was Get Out. I don't think I could sit through a romantic comedy or a Tarantino movie even if it were free.
Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise. |

Didn't I just say I can't sit through them?
Jackie Brown was okay. Then I tried Pulp Fiction, (wasn't impressed).
I don't favor his ham fisted approach to making movies, that's all.

That's fair enough. His later movies can be an acquired taste. I'd recommend Reservoir Dogs though. I still think it's his best. It was before the success of Pulp Fiction went to his head. And though he didn't direct it, True Romance is brilliant too. One of his best scripts. Plus it's got a pre-megastar Brad Pitt in a small role so that's always a plus. |
