If you actually took time to read dominators posts then you would know he is Indian, not black. If he wants help who are you to judge him? Geez your racism is in overdrive today.

I know something about spreadsheets. Tell me what you need. But be forewarned - it will be tricky to answer detailed questions without seeing the actual data/formulas you need help with. But I'll try!

Ok - I posted this to someone else:

Hey - so how do I do this?:
> My bank has an Average Monthly Balance - say 5000 Rupees. If today is the 5th, and my balance till today is Rs. 6000 - what is the balance I must maintain till the end of the month, for the WHOLE month's balance to be 5000? How do I do this in a spreadsheet?

If I understand, you are asking how much can you take out today, with 25 days left in the month and without doing anything else, and have the average balance be Rs. 5,000 for the entire 30-day period? correct?

If so, then here is what you'd do, and honestly this is algebra. I didn't solve it using a spreadsheet:

1. 30 days times 5,000 per day equals 150,000 total Rs./day units needed for entire month

2. 5 days times Rs. 6,000 per day equals 30,000 Rs./day units so far

3. 150,000 total units needed minus 30,000 units collected equals 120,000 Rs. units needed for rest of month to meet quota

4. If it's a 30-day month, then there are 25 days left

5. ANSWER = 120,000 units needed divided by 25 days = 4,800

Therefore, if you had Rs. 4,800 in your account for the remaining 25 days of the month, that will equal an entire monthly average balance of Rs. 5,000.

I don't know if there's an equation or formula in Excel for that kind of stuff, but if there is then those are the calculations it would be doing. I'm old, and they made me take two years of algebra in high school and college, so I just did it in my head.

Now, "financial modeling" is a very deep subject. It's something you would need to take a class for. I don't think I could teach that on a message board. It's not hard, though - but there's too much information to learn on a message board.

You might try YouTube, though. I think there are good classes on YouTube for this kind of stuff, and I think they are free. Try this search, and good luck!

Hey - Thanks for all that Rodeo - but I'd figured out all that you said myself! smile What I specifically wanted to know was - how to use a spreadsheet to do the algebra....like, I set it up <however>, and then, if I tell it (somehow) that today is the 15th - it'll auto-calculate what the remaining 15 days balance has to be. That's the kind of thing a spreadsheet can do, right?

I'll check out that link - but, could you just in the meantime tell me what fin. modelling IS - before I get into "how to DO it"? What does it DO? What is it's objective?

...Oh, and if I get into it - I'll be doing all this in LibreOffice, NOT Excel! So - any tuts for that, please? smile

Ah. I don't know anything about LibreOffice, so all the terms I use for formulas might be different that what you are familiar with.

But I am not sharp enough on Excel to know what formulas can do algebra. If LibreOffice has a Help tab, I'd suggest using that.

Go to YouTube and search for "LibreOffice tutorial" and hopefully something will come up.

"Financial modeling" as I understand and use the term means projecting how a project or business is going to perform. For instance, let's say you want to open a shop. You set up a spreadsheet to track all the costs it takes to open it, which tells you how much money you need to get the doors open.

Then you project how much product you will sell in the first year, second year, and probably third year. You do these projections for each month of each year, trying to be as conservative as you can. The goal is to see how long it will take before your business starts making money, and how much money it will lose before it turns the corner and becomes profitable.

You add up all the money your business loses before it becomes profitable, and add that to the amount of money it will take you to open the doors of the business, and then you'll know how much money you need at the very beginning. That's one example of financial modeling.

Basically, I don't know. Use the Help feature, I'd think the answer is there.

..oh, and I've already searched for YT tuts, btw - but nothing from the *creators of LibreOffice* themselves! - I was kinda expecting that. The stuff that IS there, seems kinda haphazard - hard to tell which video will start right from the beginning, and give me the info I need.
