I have no doubt that if we (my husband and I) were in danger while we were sleeping, our cat would come in and walk on the bed until she woke us up, just like she does in the morning when she wants her breakfast. Or if she wasn't in the bedroom with us, she would stick her paws under the door and meow until she was able to awaken us! -- We belong to the cat as much, if not more, than the cat belongs to us. When she rubs against me, licks my face, or waits at the door for me to come home from work, she's not just showing affection, she's marking me as hers.
